U.S. Patent #1329559 A ~ Tesla's Valvular Conduit

@lucky760 That's a question for an engineer or someone well-versed in fluid dynamics I'm guessing but something else in place to create the vacuum would probably suffice....something that wears-out with less frequency than the valve itself perhaps?

Back to Eden Documentary

Good documentary but holy hell too much preaching...

But sad thing is the lessons on creating the garden are pure gold if you ignore the bible verses and such.

I've used wood chip cover and have also never had to water or fertilize the garden or rotate drops. If you copycat how nature works with covered ground then you can mimic nature in your garden and never have to water or fertilize it.

The proselytizing is a bit over the top, leave that out and this could have been award winning

Anti-abortion Ohio legislator-"I never even thot about it"

shatterdrose says...

You bring up valid points, but I think there was a slight misunderstanding.

As for the motive being the main focus, the reason is that the punishment varies based on motive. If it's premeditated then it's a 1st degree life without parole type deal verses we got into a fist fight over beer and I accidentally killed the person.

I see pro-choice laws in the same light. Yes, in the end it's an abortion just like in the end, it's still murder. But the reason for said act, just as you mentioned with self-defense and assistant suicide, does in fact make a world of difference.

For instance, if the woman is simply wanting an abortion because of convenience verses she was raped by her father. Hence why the law can be so disastrously dangerous if they're not considering the motivations as well. The law on murder does consider motivation, which is why there are so many degrees of murder on our law books and case studies.

I worry about the Law of Unintended Consequences with this senators outlook.

robbersdog49 said:

At a trial it is important (although not the main focus, proving there was a murder and whether or not the defendant committed the murder is). But this senator isn't at trial or talking about a trial, he's talking about introducing a law and for that purpose the motive is (for him) irrelevant.

Think about the murder example. It's illegal for one person to deliberately kill another person. There are many noble reasons why you might want to kill someone and there are certain circumstances where it's OK (self defence or soldiers at war) but in every other case it's illegal. It's even illegal if the person being murdered wants to be murdered.

I personally think that last bit is as wrong as the anti abortion laws but that's another debate entirely...

But for the purposes of the law the motivation behind the murder really doesn't matter. You could be doing it for the best of reasons but it's still murder. Same for the senator and his legislation. The reasons are just irrelevant. Maybe they would be relevant if a person was brought to trial under the laws proposed in the legislation, but that's for the courts to decide.

who is noam chomsky's favorite anarchist thinkers?

bcglorf says...

I don't wanna sound ignorant when Chomsky clearly is better versed than I am, but when discusses Anarchy here, it sounds a whole heck of a lot more like my understanding of socialism/marxism than what I understand to be anarachy.

Am I the only one under the belief that Anarchy was the absence of any form of organized government, and that the notion of the people owning the means of production was no part of that, and a form of government in itself that presumably Anarchy was the antithesis to?

Um no. We respect women too much. Like the bible says, "Spare the rod, spoil the woman." We let them decide things and in turn they make us into little credit cards to be disposed of....sad...

But the solution is clear. Either get rid of our ape-like concepts of manhood or crush the fuck out of this respect-for-women-and-children-and-others bullshit.

Duck Dynasty Is Fake!

shinyblurry says...

Let's look at the scripture in a little more detail:

Mat 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

This scripture is at the tail end of a conversation Jesus had with a young rich man. The young man had inquired of the Lord how he could have eternal life. The answer Jesus gave was simple, "sell your possesions and follow me." In the rest of the scripture we see that the only requirements for salvation is a confession of Jesus as Lord and a belief that He was raised from the dead. So, why did the Lord give the additional requirement to the rich young man of selling all of his possessions? We see why in the next verse:

Matthew 19:22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

This man, even knowing that Jesus could instruct him on how to attain eternal life, could not follow after the Lord because he loved his wealth more than God. This is what Jesus said in Matthew 6:24

"No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

His riches were the stumbling block preventing him from following the Lord, and that is why the Lord dealt with it there. The Lord knew He was a slave to his wealth and could not bear to be parted from it, even at the expense of his eternal life. This is a reason why the Lord warned us in Matthew 16:26

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

Which is to say, that if someone laid all the wealth of the world at your feet, and you traded your soul for it, you would have made an unprofitable deal. The wealth of this world is perishing and will pass away, and we along with it, but those who do the will abide with Him forever. So, let's look on to what Jesus said to His disciples after the young rich man parted:

Matthew 19:23-26 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

You'll notice that Jesus only said it was impossible for men, but with God all things are possible. The problem with the young rich man was not his wealth but his heart condition before God. He wanted the gift more than he wanted the giver of the gift. When Jesus put his loyalties to the test, the true condition of his heart was exposed. There is nothing inherently bad about money, but there is something inherently bad about putting it before God. That is the sin of idolatry, and that is what Jesus is condemning, not money itself. Take Joseph of Arimethea for example:

Matthew 27:57-60 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.

And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.

Joseph was a disciple of Jesus yet He did not require Joseph to sell all of his possessions. Indeed, if he had Joseph would not have been able to provide the tomb that Jesus was buried in, ultimately fulfilling the prophecy about Jesus in Isaiah 53:9.

So, to conclude, what God is most concerned about is the heart. If your love for your possesions is what is keeping you from the Lord, He may ultimately require you to sacrifice them. I think is especially difficult for the rich man to realize his need for salvation because he is so self-sufficient. He believes he is in control of his life because his money insulates him from many of the cares of this world. He does not realize that his very breath rests in the hands of the Lord. He may not confess, as Job did, that his riches are all blessings from on High, and at the disposal of the Almighty to do with them what He may.

Job 1:21 And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."

RFlagg said:

That Jesus Himself said it is impossible for a rich man to get into heaven, doesn't matter if they want to or do follow Him, they have their reward here, and won't have one in Heaven. So

Two brothers make awesome best man video

lucky760 says...

Lyrics:

He is your brother.
And just because he's older,
He will always try to boss you.
No matter what you do,
You must obey him!

He is your brother.
And just because he's younger,
You will learn to tell your fists no,
When he beats you on Nintendo.
Do not hit him!

Ahhhhhhhhh
Don't leave us,
You are our jesus.
But you look like mother.
Don't want to lose you,
To another.

Ahhhhhhhhh
Don't leave us,
You are our jesus.
She maybe your lover,
But do not forget,
You are our brother!

You were a loser,
Your haircut was a mullet.
You could not play the bassoon,
You had a dark blue bedroom,
What were you thinking?!

You also had a mullet!
I was always the cool one.
I was the budding rock star,
I'm awesome at the guitar....
...But you work for me now!

Ahhhhhhhhh
Don't leave us,
You are our jesus.
But you look like mother.
Don't want to lose you,
To another.

Ahhhhhhhhh
Don't leave us,
You are our jesus.
She maybe your lover,
But do not forget,
You are our brother!

You were working as a salesman,
In a homeware & design store.
You only ever wore black,
Your life was made of Habitat.
You were lonely.
Ooooooooooohhhhhhhhh

That was when you met her,
Though you would never tell us.
But then we finally guessed it,
Out came your dirty secret -
You loved your boss!
Ooooooooooohhhhhhhhh
You loved your boss!!!

You are my brother.
Just look how far you've come now.
I used to change your nappy,
Now you're old & saggy,
Fat like Paddy.

You are my brother.
I always looked up to you.
But now to me it's quite weird,
Cause you have hair & a beard,
Just like our Daddy.

Ahhhhhhhhh
Don't leave us,
You are our jesus.
But you look like mother.
Don't want to lose you,
To another.

Ahhhhhhhhh
Don't leave us,
You are our jesus.
She maybe your lover,
But do not forget,
You are our brother!

Honest Trailers - Iron Man 3

ChaosEngine says...

@VoodooV, nooooo! Say it ain't so.... we can make up...

I would call myself a low level comics geek in that I'm reasonably well versed, but I don't follow everything and Iron Man was always just below my radar in comic form. So (unusually for me), my first real exposure to Iron Man was the movie...
and I loved it. It was just such a nice break to see a superhero movie that was having fun with the premise. Don't get me wrong, Nolan's Batman movies are awesome (well, the first two certainly), but variety is nice.

So I had no investment in the characters or existing storylines, and maybe if I did I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much.

That said, I still think it was an interesting take.

and I think this (shameless plug) *related= http://videosift.com/video/Iron-Man-3-the-spolier sums it up well for me.

Choggie Sings and Plays the Guitar...

I was all shitfaced-hammered-that's 2 count-em 2, empty bottles of Bulliet Bourbon on the floor next to me (no excuse for prowess or the lack thereof on the instrument) and I was using the internal features of a Fuji finepix S1000 cheapo digicam for the recording...ambient light, wasn't shooting for perfection-My only goal was to make it through the verses with my voice as damaged as it is....Open tuned to D, this tune was originally recorded by James Arnold, who had a singular left-handed slide style yet unmatched after over 80 years, I can't even begin to approach his level of panachy on the axe-Thanks for the props

Buck said:

I'm begining to think I missed a line in the videosifts terms of agreement that says "must be able to play an instrument".

Good for you Ching! You do need better recording equipment though....but I'm just being a dick....good for you for doing something you love.

Jon Stewart's 19 Tough Questions for Libertarians!

JiggaJonson says...

@enoch
Do native americans have to pay taxes to live within the US on a reservation? I thought that was part of their whole thing. I'm not terribly well versed on the issue. And I'm not sure what you mean by christianity and the other religious comparisons. I certainly dont agree with my christian friends on things like abortion, but I respect those that adhere to their religious text more than quasi christians that pick and choose their theology and then pretend that they're god is still infallible (even if i disagree with them all the more).

Blankfist made the original comparison of himself to Thoreau, I'm just fleshing out the idea to see if it's a fair comparison or not.

Thoreau is a personal hero of mine, so I find the comparison insulting and feel the need to press on questioning.

From my point of view, a majority of libertarians are nay-sayers who, as I've described, are all theory and no action. I disagree with the whole "government who governs least, governs best," nonsense; but the comparison to someone who I'd hold up on the same pedestal as oh, say, Nelson Mandela, is one that really gets under my skin.

Democracy Now! - "A Massive Surveillance State" Exposed

Yogi says...

Decided to read the David Simon thing. He's a very intelligent person, who's looking at things from his point of view as a law enforcement journalist. He sees nothing of the history of people who were murdered because they disagreed with their government.

I doubt he has studied anything about COINTELPRO. He just isn't well versed in this subject, or if he is he didn't cite anything.

And now reading his response to the comment section brings about the real thing. He thinks because 9/11 happened and now Boston that we are under horrible attack and need to do these things. He talks nothing about the wars we've waged all over the world, nothing about the dictators we've supported. Nothing about how we're the largest terrorist state on Earth.

Again he's ignorant about history, that is all that is.
