Dominoes with bricks (wait for it)

Payback says...

Actually, it's pretty simple.

Lay them all down first, then tilt each up, one at a time. It's just easier with bricks due to their size. Dominoes would be horrifically difficult to do the same way.

The precision this would take tempts me to think it's fake, but it's such a good idea that I can't resist it.

I'm Not Scared of Donald Trump

RFlagg says...

The problem remains the Supreme Court. Ginsburg is 83, Kennedy is 80, and Breyer is 78... So the next 4 years is likely to see up to 4 replacements in the court. While Scalia was a conservative, and a conservative replacement wouldn't be overly bad, Ginsburg and Breyer, were they to be replaced with a far right justice... and the Republicans would push as far right as they can, would bring about the end of most of the progress this nation has seen. We'd see them retake on abortion and rule it out, gar marriage illegal again... all this is not only possible, but most likely with any Republican in the Presidency... the Conservatives know this, in fact it is the main reason they are going out and voting this election, even if they hate Trump. They will not only hold onto the lead the Conservatives have in the court, they will be able to tilt it very far in a Conservative direction that will be that way for a very long time as they serve for life (or until they want to step down). Every President of late has done 2 appointments (Obama would have done 3 had Congress done it's job and moved on his nomination for Scalia's replacement), and the next likely has 3 to 4 in the next 4 years counting Scalia. This is the long term danger... beyond the rhetoric making it far more likely for lone wolf attacks, which I'd put up with if it meant a better turn in the Supreme Court.

Dogs Flying An Airplane

Ashenkase says...

So, I don't want to take anything away from these dogs. They are smart, extremely trainable and handle adverse environments with ease. Kudos to them for this "feat" of outer worldly doggie duties.

But lets not kid ourselves here, the dogs are NOT flying the plane. The yoke is locked and they are simply pushing down left or down right to "steer" the plain. Impressive for the likes of dog... but not flying.

Flying involves so much more than tilting the yoke. Way finding, fuel/weight calculations, the ability to take off and land, stall evasion, emergency outs, the ability to understand weather forecasts and weather patterns, etc, etc, etc.

If the pilot unlocked the yoke those dogs would have nose dived into some English ninnies garden in less time than it would have taken them to eat a treat.

Up voting for the dogs... down voting for the schmaltzy human commentary.

I know you want this person banned, but it's not going to happen for now. Maybe I've even had private words with this person on the matter, but that's my job, and ... as angry as you might feel - my only counsel is to say that things are rarely black and white - and human behaviour is complex.

If this is one of those things that you just can't accept, perhaps it's time to take a break. I can understand that.

I'll keep tilting and windmills and enjoying the occasional sycophantic up vote.

Seriously? That's your response? Some people agree with bob so it's ok to post racist shit? Allow me to post child porn then, allow me to post some WBC "god hates fags" shit. Some people agree with that shit, so by that logic, it must be allowed. Your guidelines say don't post racist stuff, but I must have missed the part that said "unless some people agree with it, then it's ok"

You're worried about group think? on the internet???? HAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHA! You're tilting against windmills on that one because you're a little late to the party, dag. Besides, if racism not being tolerated is group think, then sign me up! EVERY site...EVERY SITE leans a certain way, dictated by the particular community (even a dying community like ours). If this nonsense of "some people agree with it" exemption is your new excuse, then you're no better than CNN or other media outlets, who allow all sorts preposterous shit to air, because they're trying to pretend to be 50/50 on every issue, and don't debunk things that they know are incorrect...because hey..some people believe it, so it's ok. Or is it just to feed the controversy and get more clicks? Cuz that's another thing the press does. They don't care about reality, they just want that sweet ad revenue.

I don't get what the problem is, you've banned people for racist stuff before, why is it so difficult now? These are your own rules dag. When are you going to enforce them? If you're not going to enforce them, then take those rules down. If you're not going to do that, then you might as well shut this site down, or just revel in the apathy that surrounds this site and enjoy your sycophantic upvotes?

You've got ample evidence, you've got a slew of clearly racist videos, you've got him abusing the ignore system in regards to @newtboy, and all you have to do is look at his comment history to see more reasons to get him out of here.

Do your job!

Gee, that's a bit harsh. Look, I completely disagree with what this guy is saying too. But you have to admit he represents the views of a sizeable portion of the American public.

Is it really better to chuck him out and risk becoming a groupthink choir? I know we've done it before, and there is definitely a line that can be crossed - but I'd rather not ban someone out just because he's saying what 60% of the US South thinks too.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Donald Trump

heropsycho says...

The problem is that sets up what reminds me of the 2000 election. It absolutely astounded me half the country thought George W. Bush was a valid candidate, let alone the better candidate than Al Gore, not that I liked Gore, but given the choice between the two, Gore had viable plans for the budget, a cohesive foreign policy, etc.

It shouldn't have been a close election, but not only was it razor close, Gore lost. Countless times there have been in world history leaders who came about who generally wouldn't and shouldn't have, but they did. All it takes is a bad recession or other event to tilt the odds in their favor at the right time. Hitler doesn't come to power without the Great Depression and the Treaty of Versailles leaving Germany dependent on US loans.

And to me, Trump is absolutely frightening. I honestly have absolutely no idea what he would do as President, and not in a good way. I quite honestly don't even know if he's actually in line with the Tea Party or not. It is terrifying to me that he's on a course where potentially a recession at the wrong time could make him president because so many voters are absolutely ignorant or stupid enough to support him.

Screw the entertainment value of it. I keep thinking back to the George W. Bush Iraqi occupation and the crapshow that was Katrina and realize people's lives are literally at stake by botching the selection of the next President, and when you make one option completely invalid before the election even starts, it doesn't help.

Yeah. San Francisco isn't that affected by earth tilt.

I forgot about the flip of the seasons.

Every year, I get giddy with joy on the first day of winter, because I KNOW THE DAYS ARE GETTING LONGER. I might not see the difference immediately, but I know we are "on the mend."

Conversely, I get a tad bit sad on the first day of summer. Because I know the days are beginning to get shorter. It isn't a Newtonian "equal and opposite reaction" -- after all, it is still light out at 9:45 pm the next day. There is a soupcon, an egg wash, a slight breeze of sadness knowing that we have reached our apex and are headed downhill.

But for you? First day of summer is just the first day of summer, at that latitude.

Scary temps down there. And here our short-sighted, bought-by-big-money-interests-polticians are fighting the reality of climate crisis even as you guys bake.

My apologies from my continent to yours.

Thanks Melbourne is about 37° south, so in Northern hemisphere terms it should be roughly equivalent to San Francisco and largely unaffected. It's also mid Summer here, so Christmas day was (unusually) mid 30s (would be 90s in °F). Normally we'd have spring weather, but a few years ago it hailed on Christmas day, and my Dad remembers one year when he was young it was 102°F (which we had to convert to 39°C to decide was pretty hot).

Solving By Using 'Extreme Case' Puzzles With Physics Girl

Barbar says...

Wouldn't it tilt towards the wooden block (meaning indicate the wooden block was heavier) since bouyancy would have contributed more to the larger wooden block?

On the other hand she states they have identical mass (not weight), so in a vacuum they should register even.

Problem 1: The scale will tilt towards the lead block. It's the same principle as Archimedes, except using air instead of water. When there is air, there is a buoyant force exerted on any object immersed in it. Remove the air, and the weight of the object goes up, by the weight of the same volume of air.

Problem 2: 20*pi meters. I'm not sure how extreme physics is involved in this one at all. It's trivially derived from the definition of circumference.
