Evening doll! Having studied film and being in the biz for as long as I have, I have become pretty jaded, and was convinced that I have seen it all. There just doesn't seem like there is any original thought left, Hollywood appears to have given up, and watching endless "student films" kinda proved that assumption.

However, every now and then a short comes along that renders me speechless, snatches the breath from my lungs, and makes me stare in wonderment at the screen. Watching a Horror Film as a Young Boy is one, and I keep finding my mind drifting back to it, playing it over and over in my head.

This is why I dig the Sift so much, and really feel connected to it and some of the amazing people here. This does more for my soul than any meeting or therapy session ever could.

P.S.Holy balls, you have 0 videos in your Personnel Que...I think I will just start referring to you as King, having @bareboards2 already nominated you to join our shared fantasy. It really does seem to be fitting!!

Samantha Bee on Orlando - Again? Again.

Mordhaus says...

Of course no one is talking about a full gun ban. However, once you compromise the 2nd Amendment, you place the decision in the hands of our legislature. You know, the super functional branch of our government that never makes mistakes. You also allow them to decide 'what' you need.

I've not been to NZ, but I seriously doubt that the cultural dichotomy that is present in the USA is remotely represented in NZ.

I support abortion rights, I support gay marriage, I would love to be able to trip out to the local head shop and buy some weed, and I don't think heavily restricting guns would solve the issues we are looking at. The last two mass shootings were terrorist related. Prior to that, they have primarily been mental health related. We have one of the worst mental health policies and systems in the world. Medicate first, don't hospitalize, don't provide therapy, and other such bright ideas. Ever since we passed the Community Mental Health Centers Act of 1963, homelessness and acts of violence by the mentally ill have been on the rise. Inpatient centers have become rare and, like I said, most people get a pill and a swift kick in the ass out the door. I would be willing to bet if we fixed our health care issues in regards to the mentally ill and maybe put a 15 day waiting period on the purchase of ANY gun, we would stop 99% of these mass shootings.

"If we allow gays to marry, what's next? Can I marry my dog?"

No-one is talking about banning guns. I wouldn't support that myself. I have friends who are hunters and target shooters.

But be reasonable; you can have a gun for target shooting or hunting or even "home defence" (if you're really that paranoid), but you don't need an AR-15 or anything with a high capacity magazine and it's not unreasonable to make sure that people who own guns aren't complete nutjobs.

NZ is in the top 15% of gun ownership rates per capita (22 guns per 100 people), but our average annual firearm homicide rate for the last 30 years or so is ~0.2 deaths per 100k people.

Compare that to the USA. The US tops the chart of gun ownership with 112 guns per 100 people. So the gun ownership rate is 5 times that of NZ, but the average annual firearm homicide rate is 4 deaths per 100k people. That's 20 times the number of murders. Even if you allow for the higher gun ownership rate, you're still 4 times worse than NZ.

And the difference is simple: we have sensible gun ownership laws.

I saw a great post the other day.
"The conservative mind:
Abortions? BAN THEM!
Gay Marriage? BAN IT!
Marijuana? BAN IT!
Guns? eh, banning things never works"

But hey, you're gonna need those guns for when Donary Trumpton ushers in a tyrannical dictatorship. Good luck with that; let me know how you get on with an AR-15 versus a predator drone.

Rashida Jones coaches Stephen on how to be a Feminist

enoch says...

so i am sitting here drinking my coffee reading this thread and i have to say...

depressing.

so many wonderful people that i admire and respect getting twisted about?

words.

not the intent,nor over-all context..but words.

i can see where @newtboy is coming from, and what he is laying down is pretty non-controversial.i also see what @bareboards2 is laying down, and is not really in opposition to what newt is talking about.

both ideologies can reside in the same context and not be in conflict.in fact they compliment each other and ....and maybe i am reading their positions wrong..they actually agree on the fundamentals.

@bareboards2 actually addressed this by pointing out that "tone" can be misinterpreted.(good for you BB) and really the exchange between newt and BB was about their own self-identification.

yet this entire thread is almost exclusively focusing on words, and the gravitas and weight given to those words by the individual, which is subjective.

i feel newts pain.
i had a run where i was posting videos exposing hyper-militant third wave feminists and how they were using the justice system to punish those who disagreed with them, and every self-identified feminist came out of the wood work to declare their disappointment in me and defend the very thing they identified with.

what confused me was why people would even attempt to defend that absolute cluster fuck of abuse as somehow even being remotely to do with actual feminism.until i realized that many hadn't even watched the video or read the articles .so they were not defending those third wave feminists that had abused a justice system but rather defending a term that they self-identified as.

after long (and i mean long ..@Payback is still in therapy) back and forths between myself and fellow sifters.when i FINALLY got them to address the specific situation, not one...not ONE sifter..felt morally obligated to defend those feminists actions.

why?
because taken on its singular merits, those feminists were fucking wrong.

then why all the defensive posturing?
why the passive aggressive swipes at me?
and the exhaustive back and forths just to get self-identified feminists to at least admit that those particular feminists had abused their position to punish a man for simply disagreeing.

because they were defending feminism in general.
because they self-identified as feminists and failed to see the situation as it was and jumped to defend a WORD that they happened to identify with.

as a whole we can,as a society hold onto philosophies that are not mutually exclusive.
so you can be a feminist and a humanist.
or a humanist and an MRA advocate.

@bareboards2 may be a feminist but i know that if she witnessed me being harassed and discriminated against she would jump to my defense,as would @newtboy.

there are people who identify as something and yet can still be major dickweeds.so what they self-identify as does not automatically give them a pass.

so dont get so caught up in identity politics my friends.
they are just words after all.
just listen to the person talking, they will reveal if they are a total tool soon enough.how they self-identify is irrelevant.

Horses Help Heal People’s Troubled Bodies And Spirits

newtboy jokingly says...

This reminds me a lot of Humpty Dumpty.
'All the king's horses, and all the king's men, couldn't put Humpty together again.'
I always think.....maybe they shouldn't have given the horses the first crack at fixing him. ;-)

Really, this type of animal therapy seems to work with any calm animal that the patient isn't fearful of.

Magic Mushrooms May Cure Depression

AeroMechanical says...

I believe there could be something to this. I've heard the same thing about other hallucinogens in previous studies (though that was years ago, and nothing came of it). It's interesting stuff, I'd guess sort of like a chemical electroshock therapy. From the detailed explanation I got from a very, very close friend who used hallucinogens in his younger years, there definitely did seem to be an effect sort of like throwing the reset switch in the brain that lasted for a good while after the trip itself was over.

Of course, cocaine, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, alcohol and opiates also "cure" depression. So it's pretty complicated in practice.

X-Men: Apocalypse | Official Trailer [HD] | 20th Century FOX

I thought this was going to be a heart breaking tale about group of people who are going through hormone replacement therapy, and this movie explores their relationships and personal lives.

But it's just another super hero movie.

Science to the rescue; this is how you rehab a broken back

Yeah exactly. It looks like she is taking her first steps after immobility and muscle wastage of the legs.
I just think if your going to get consent to show a video of an intimate therapy session then at least give some more clinical information.

SFOGuy said:

Look at the atrophy of her leg muscles (flat on her back for a month in a cast) and the nasty purple scar along her back at the :44 second mark---about lumbar spine. Looks like she got a set of steel rocks on either side of her crushed vertebrae.

You're right; she didn't sever her spinal cord; but she's still lost muscle and has to bring the strength and power back to her back, and develop the ability to start standing again---and the water, I think, floats her to take most of the weight off as she starts to move...

But I could be wrong.

I was talking about getting therapy, not getting laid. Hahahah!

He talks about women, dates and girlfriends often enough, so I'm sure he get laid. Artists can hardly avoid it.

Yep. And he knows it. Pretty much all of Lev's videos are about his tendency to think too much.

Given his level of openness and the lack of therapy mentioned in his videos, I have to assume he isn't getting any. Too bad.

eric3579 said:

Lev thinks WAY to much and should be in therapy. He's gonna drive himself crazy. I often overthink also. Not half as bad as Lev seems to, but still way to much for my well being. It causes so much unnecessary anxiety which i take medication for, and as many can probably tell i edit and delete so many things i do online due to this type of problem. Good news though im going to start seeing a counselor/therapy to see if i can be fixed

Sorry quickly turned my comment into me me me.

(edit) Ha im already (less than one min)thinking of deleting or changing my comment. Fighting the urge.

(edit) within two minutes. Going to take a klonopin to deal with the anxiety that's starting to well up for putting out this comment. Still haven't altered the comment...yet.

Zen Delivers 9 Minutes of Stupidity about Tiny Hydrogen

enoch says...

ugh...watching that was painful.
reminds me of my time running a metaphysical shop with my girlfriend at the time.

she had got it in her head that she wanted to take the shop in a new direction which was in the form of similar "miracle" cures such as this.

the arguments we had were epic!

i just didnt see a need nor a reason.we already had massage therapy, aroma therapy and reiki.we made our own lotions and soaps and had a massive line of candles.why would she want to delve into supplements? that were unproven and possibly dangerous?

well,i lost that argument and after a few months i understood her reasoning=money.
good lord our customers would spend a fortune on these supplements, which made all kinds of claims (all with zippo research to back those claims up),and all unregulated.

and our customers SWORE that these bullshit remedies worked and that they felt better, more energetic and clear-minded.placebo effect on steroids.

of course my girlfriend would never actually admit that profit was her motive.that would go against her own professed morality, but that is what it was:greed.

that was the beginning of the end for our relationship.i was sincerely attempting to help people and her behavior was a disillusionment that my moral compass just could not assimilate.

i am a man of faith, and every aspect of my life is directed by that faith, from politics to personal interactions, and i had lost faith in her.

i find it reprehensible and disgusting to profit off of people when they are the most fragile and vulnerable, and i refuse to engage in that form of vile practice.

EPA Finally Admits What's Killing Honey Bees

newtboy says...

It's insane that this was one of the original suspects in Colony Collapse Disorder, and only now, 10+ years into the decimation of bees (and many other insects) can the EPA admit it's a problem....yet they won't likely make ANY changes until the end of the year, ensuring another year of CCD for the bee industry as well as all other native insects that are effected.

Always a week late and $99 short seems to be the motto of our species these days. More and more I tend to think we aren't worth saving and that the collapse of the eco system is a strong, scorched earth type of chemo therapy the biosphere needs to remove the cancer that is man. It's delicious irony that we'll do it to ourselves, but unforgiveable that we'll also probably take 99% of life with us.
Where's a plague when we need one?

I Jumped Off The Golden Gate Bridge

newtboy says...

Hmmm.....
Thinking about my previous comment, I wonder if this is a good problem for VR therapy. If a therapist could let a patient virtually jump and gain that realization that their problems are either solvable or meaningless, it just might turn their lives around instantly.....or it might just desensitize them from the fear of jumping.
Hmmmm.....

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Mental Health

yellowc says...

There's not much to it I'm afraid.

Plenty of successful treatments are available. It's simply a matter of funding.

From my experiences in Australia, both close and friends who work in mental health. They're overworked, the pay sucks, there's no budget to hire more staff and the rooms are crowded.

There has been multiple instances when a patient who needs to be admitted, will be left in a bed in emergency and ferried about as needed, while a bed in the mental health ward frees up.

This is the sort of funding mental health workers are dealing with.

If your patient is already at home and their low risk, you'll be told to just try to keep them at home and manageable for as long as possible. You're on waiting list, so just hope nothing happens in the mean time during their relapse.

What people fail to understand, is if all the workers are so stressed out to the point of trying to shuffle just getting some one a place to sleep. How in the hell do they have time to do any sort of actual therapy?

They get criticised for just pushing drugs and pumping people out after 2-3wks and yet no one appreciates that they must. Because they just got a new patient that is severely ill and a person with mild schizophrenia is going to be sent along on their merry way, regardless if they needed another month or two to fully stabilise. They're doing ok and they can just revolve back around when the meds wear off, perhaps they'll have another room then.

It's sad but it's reality and it's not their fault. You can point fingers and demand better this and that and this. Or you can realise just the mere fact that these people have these terribly shitty jobs means they care a whole lot more fucks than you or I ever have or will.

They need more money, simple.
