Watchmen - Adapting The Unadaptable

Jinx says...

I enjoyed the movie. I read the book first, but only because I saw the trailers and wanted to see the movie, but I was advised to go to the source first. Perhaps because it was all fresh to me etc, that when I saw Zac's "moment montage" I was able to fill in the gaps.

I guess it depends on your definition of adaption. I feel that implicit in adaption is transformation or evolution. The story is in the telling no? Can you cut the story out, leaving behind all context, and still call it "Watchmen"?

The homage to Batman's suit is perhaps not literally true to the source material, but I think in some ways it is kind of true to the spirit of it. Here's Watchman, the graphic novel, was playing with our preconceptions of what makes a superhero comic book. Perhaps Snyder's intention was to use motifs of superhero movies in the same way Watchmen used preconceptions of its medium. maybe.

I disagree that it cannot be adapted to film. It could be done with a director that can function in a storytelling environment, which Snyder simply cannot do. The problem with Snyder was covered very well here recently, *related=http://videosift.com/video/Nerdwriter-Fundamenal-Flaw-Zack-Snyder-Batman-v-Superman
He was exactly the wrong director to have film this. I would have went with Del Toro or Whedon, but even they have their flaws.

Now, if the question is, can an adaptation be done that Alan Moore will feel 'suits' his vision? Probably not. He is an artist, in very good ways, but also in some very bad ones. He has a specific idea of how his creation must flow, which means he will never be satisfied with a medium outside of the graphic novel or comic.

Personally, I think one of the few un-adaptable works would be Gaiman's Sandman, but that's just my opinion.

Whenever someone is talking up Deadpool to me it's always: "The references..." (to other comic book movies I didn't care for), "the self-deprecation..." (agreeing with me that some of those movies were indeed shit), "breaking the fourth wall... ooh!" (a dramatic device so old it's Elizabethan... at least). And I'm supposed to be impressed by all that? Meta-, or up it's own ass?
Seems like you need to have watched every other comic book movie to enjoy Deadpool. Both to get the in-jokes no one else cares about, and to have a pile of mediocre crap that this movie can shine next to in comparison.
To me it was just another uninteresting superhero movie but this time with swears.

Stephen Fry on Political Correctness

ChaosEngine says...

Oh no, really? I'm shattered...

Actually, the sad thing is that Frys opinion used to mean something, but this is just so fucking stupid.

Baseball caps?
Superhero movies?

Tell you what, Steve. I'll wear whatever the fuck I want and I'll take my movie going advice from someone who wasn't one of the worst parts of the awful Hobbit movies.

So if that means I (shock, horror) actually have sympathy for sexual abuse survivors, well, I guess I'll just have to learn to live with myself somehow.

So for those who might know, will this movie go down as the worst batman film ever and or the worst portrayal of batman? I don't watch superhero films, just curious if affleck will be saddled with being in or being the worst batman of all time.

Don't care about superheroes, don't care about this one (he's the blind guy, right?) but upvote for channeling The Raid and Oldboy-style choreography here. That takes balls for a western serial, even if it is the unorthodox channel of netflix.

Though I don't care about faux-single-shot action scenes either. Hide your cuts better, film guy!

Such a good talk. Guy has a great sense of humor. Him and his kind are real life superheroes. Call me impressed. Makes me wonder how it feels to save a life.

Captain America: Civil War - Super Bowl 50 Teaser

moonsammy says...

I don't think they could really present the original storyline in a cinematic format. The comic worked because they were able to employ the ENTIRE Marvel universe, and reference years and years of superhero / supervillain interactions. With a drastically more limited cast and history the story simply wouldn't feel right. They're still using the general concept of the story it appears, but in a significantly more limited context.

I think my only complaint will be that they're not pulling the television characters into CW, but perhaps (hopefully!) they're saving the full-cast spectacle for Infinity War.

Some of those peak hours/days are rough. Thankless job, really. Props to the MvPs and other helpful people, my homies. Couldn't weather the storm without the legitimately helpful people; the core of the decent portion of the community; the unentitled, do-gooders of the gaming world: the superheroes. The individual in this video, whom I respect (despite my better judgement) is the villain in this series.

The Warcraft IP is a behemoth with a thousand beating hearts incapable of true destruction. If WoW were a Magic: The Gathering card it would have "Indestructible" and "Can't be the target of spells or abilities" printed on it. Sticks and stones -- words ain't spell damage. YOU LOSE. Good day, sir.

Feminist icon? The superhero whose weakness is mild bondage sessions with men?

And regarding Gal Gadot and her "wrong body type", in today's world, the closest to an Amazon would be an MMA fighter like Gina Carano. I'd be fine with that but I also like Pretzel-flavoured ice cream.

I'm presuming the cheesiness of the humor is for source material accuracy?

This looks like it would be amazing, but the humor just makes me roll my eyes! I'm actually envious of the people who like it. I would love to see a wise-cracking, brutal superhero film. I want to love this movie so bad.
