Horrible ad for a "smart ring"

Father puts daughter through terrifying ordeal

Here's a direct English translation from YT captions/subtitles:

"Why his epic provided tactical. Yet the Swedish and the will land to fix. But this time...Alonso."

Makes sense to me.

She's speaking English...I think...

I actually got almost all of it (missed 2-3 words to a combination of crowd noise and the accent) without subtitles. But I've got several UK friends and coworkers, English and Irish, plus having English friends of the family that visited often when I was growing up.

A lot of the folks in my small hometown in Kansas are the type that have never been out of the state, and who need the TV subtitles even for accents that seem really easy to me like BBC English, New Zealand, Sydney (not broad Australian), etc. Just hopeless with accents.

But actually, the best thing about the video was her story -- which was actually quite funny assuming I got the "IRA" implication correct.

Apple Engineer Talks about the New 2015 Macbook

oritteropo says...

Here, with subtitles of the original story, https://youtu.be/WDiB4rtp1qw

Original clip is called "Risitas y las paelleras", and it's a funny story about the work-shy laughing guy's bad experience working for a seaside restaurant in Chipiona, from Spanish tv show Ratones Coloraos.

(Also, @Payback, even speaking quite good Spanish might not be enough for this guy).

Anyone have a link to the original video? This guy with five teeth must be telling the funniest anecdote in the history of mankind.

I'm also happy to see that we can now let the Germans in on the joke. If someone could use some CGI magic so Fiveteeth is sitting at the table in Hitler's bunker, that would probably be pretty great.

Right. So, what's the need for the original video? If you want to know what the story is, someone can translate it from this link. Just because there are bogus subtitles, doesn't mean Spanish speakers won't understand what he's really saying.

Payback said:

Ummm... you do know they just add a bogus "translation" text, right?

If you know anyone who can speak Spanish, the audio is still original...

under the dome-chinese journalist documentary gone viral

...again... This is a good documentary. I'll have to see if I can find a HD backup with the same English subtitles done (as the others typically just use Google's "hope it works" system; and of course it always fails spectacularly). Not only is China doing to themselves the same things we also did to ourselves at the beginning of the 20th century, they are doing it on a far bigger scale. They are also doing many idiotic things right now around the planet. Like: they want to build a nuclear reactor in Pakistan, near heavy terrorist issues, and also a region where earthquakes and floods hit a lot; second, they want to create a "secondary" Panama Canal, that goes through Nicaragua (part of the path goes through the America's largest fresh water lake, which is also very important), and of course there are others.

They've just got their hands dirty with the industrial revolution, but they are taking a lot of bad steps; some of which just seem like they're meant to one day cause us or other countries issues...

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Wage Gap

I found this programme to be a fascinating investigation into gender differences, which tries to find reasons to explain the career choices made by men and women.

Please don't be put off by the subtitles. Some of the interviews are conducted in English.

I love this show...but I don't watch it with any subtitles and I don't know German. Now seeing it with subtitles, I've made the right choice. Not that it's bad, It's just you don't need to know. It's much funnier if she doesn't say "We need to go to the eye doctor" and just suddenly you see them switch to the car and driving while screaming.

Comedy doesn't need translation...well her comedy doesn't at least.

RFTC: FAA Seeks to Ban FPV Flying and Limit Model Aviation

newtboy says...

I have the feeling this is more of a worst case scenario or complete exaggeration being used as an enrolment tool for the AMA rather than a plan set in stone. That said, the FAA is required to respond to public input before setting their rulings, and usually actually listens, so comment to them and follow the story is the best advice I've heard. Sending your $60 to AMA does NOT seem like the proper course of action except for the AMA themselves.
The law is already fairly clear about this....
Here's what the statute says about exempting model aircraft from additional regulation.
(https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/hr658)
"SEC. 336. SPECIAL RULE FOR MODEL AIRCRAFT.
(a) IN GENERAL.—Notwithstanding any other provision of law
relating to the incorporation of unmanned aircraft systems into
Federal Aviation Administration plans and policies, including this
subtitle, the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration
may not promulgate any rule or regulation regarding a model
aircraft, or an aircraft being developed as a model aircraft, if—
(1) the aircraft is flown strictly for hobby or recreational use;
(2) the aircraft is operated in accordance with a community-
based set of safety guidelines and within the programming
of a nationwide community-based organization;
(3) the aircraft is limited to not more than 55 pounds
unless otherwise certified through a design, construction,
inspection, flight test, and operational safety program adminis-
tered by a community-based organization;
(4) the aircraft is operated in a manner that does not
interfere with and gives way to any manned aircraft; and
(5) when flown within 5 miles of an airport, the operator
of the aircraft provides the airport operator and the airport
air traffic control tower (when an air traffic facility is located
at the airport) with prior notice of the operation (model aircraft
operators flying from a permanent location within 5 miles of
an airport should establish a mutually-agreed upon operating
procedure with the airport operator and the airport air traffic
control tower (when an air traffic facility is located at the
airport)).
(b) STATUTORY CONSTRUCTION.—Nothing in this section shall
be construed to limit the authority of the Administrator to pursue
enforcement action against persons operating model aircraft who
endanger the safety of the national airspace system.
(c) MODEL AIRCRAFT DEFINED.—In this section, the term ‘‘model
aircraft’’ means an unmanned aircraft that is—
(1) capable of sustained flight in the atmosphere;
(2) flown within visual line of sight of the person operating
the aircraft; and
(3) flown for hobby or recreational purposes."
