India Lands On The Moon’s South Pole

BSR says...

Take that Russia

MOSCOW, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Russia's first moon mission in 47 years failed when its Luna-25 space craft spun out of control and crashed into the moon after a problem preparing for pre-landing orbit, underscoring the post-Soviet decline of a once mighty space programme.

Russia's state space corporation, Roskosmos, said it had lost contact with the craft at 11:57 GMT on Saturday after a problem as the craft was shunted into pre-landing orbit. A soft landing had been planned for Monday.

Is Climate Change Just A Lot Of Hot Air?

bcglorf says...

0.8 degree increase in 100 years. We've come from the 1915 and WW1 days when cars and planes where futuristic dreams, and not dying from tetanus or basic infections was a major concern. Today 100 years later we are thriving by comparison, in spite of the 0.8 degree increased temperature. IPCC best estimates for 2100 are about 1.5 degree increase, so another hundred years and increase that is about twice as bad. Of course, it's twice as bad as what we saw the last 100 yeas and not only survived, but thrived under. It's a problem to be sure, but it's also no catastrophe either. Switching to electric cars within 20 years will reduce emissions alot and is likely inevitable no matter what. Adopting non-emitting power is possible today if people accept nuclear as France did years ago, and would be a good idea if we could only sell environmentalists on the idea. Barring that we are waiting another 20-40 years for alternatives like solar, wind and hopefully Fusion to undercut the costs of running on coal. That said, without any special moral or government mandate we should be cutting our CO2 emissions radically long before 2100 of our own accord.

Bottom line, don't panic, it's a manageable problem and we got this. In the last 100 years we've come from not having cars or planes or space craft or computers or modern medicine to taking all those things entirely for granted. It's really hard to say that 100 years from now our descendants will be crying for their inability to cope.

Orion: Trial By Fire

spawnflagger says...

yes, he is comparing only against manned space craft.

Even though this test flight will be unmanned, Orion is meant to take astronauts into space - a replacement for the retired Shuttle program.

2 things that weren't clear from this video - 1) can it take large payloads, or only what can fit into the capsule? 2) can it dock to the ISS ?

Payback said:

I can name a couple spacecraft that have gone further than Mars. Several even.

Unless they're only counting manned craft.

NASA finds exoplanet with right conditions for life to exist

Fletch says...

From my understanding of relativity and space-time continuum, 587 light years at close the speed of light wouldn't take very long to those on the space-craft because of "time-dilation". However, to those not on the spaceship...well, they'd be LONG gone. Somebody want to back me up on that? Maybe somebody smart?

That's true, but the problem is getting close enough to the speed of light to make an appreciable difference. I read in one of the science mags recently (SciAm or Science, I think) that traveling at 99.9% the speed of light would allow a crew to travel to the edge of the known universe and back in about 57 years, ship time. Not an exact quote, but it was something pretty insane like that. Unfortunately, we haven't even begun to dream of a propulsion system/energy source that would allow us to reach anywhere near that kind of speed.

Small moves. Let's get to Mars first.

OK now all you have to do is build a space ship that can go the speed of light, get on it, and ride for 587 years. sheesh!

9/11: The "Official" Conspiracy Theory

Duckman33 says...

>> ^bcglorf:

>> ^Duckman33:
I've dug plenty deep. I already know that people were trying to warn of the attacks coming, that's old news. So then why lie about it in a press conference? You know, that part where we were lied to by Condie Rice, etc. When they knew fair and well they had conceived that very scenario?
President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and other White House officials have consistently denied knowing about the 9/11 plot or receiving information that (or even imagining that) commercial aircraft could be used as weapons. For example, Bush said repeatedly there were no warnings of any kind ... “Never in anybody’s thought process ... about how to protect America did we ever think the evil doers would fly not one but four commercial aircraft into precious US targets ... never.”
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said that “the President did not – not – receive information about the use of airplanes as missiles by suicide bombers ... Until this attack took place, I think it’s fair to say that no one envisioned that as a possibility.”
Then National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice said: “I don’t think that anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon, that they would try to use an airplane as a missile ... even in retrospect there was nothing to suggest that.”

I don't care about the buildings anymore, that's all been "debunked" for the most part.
Like I've said to you before, you can quote all you want from information you find on the interwebs, that doesn't make it any more or less true than anything I can Google and quote. There's a lot more to 9/11 than just the buildings coming down, there's a lot of lies, repeated lies in fact. A lot of denial and finger pointing. And a lot of convenient "failures of the system". Whether you like it or not, or want to admit it or not there is something fishy going on here. But hey, I'm just a crackpot, loonie conspiracy theorist. What do I know, right? I should be a good robot and always implicitly trust people that lie to me on a continual basis, that way I don't have to face an ugly truth, or facts, or think for myself.

Oh for heavens sakes, your acting like discovering that politicians spin things and choose their wording carefully and to their own benefit is a discovery you've made through some stroke of genius.
Politicians will use the truth to deceive and trick the public as long as it's in their own interest, and if it's better to lie they'll do that to. That's not news, it's not a conspiracy, it's common knowledge.
So you seem to accept that an Afghan leader was warning of a 'major attack'(no mention of airplanes, just a major attack) leading up to 9/11. You don't act like his assassination on the 10th of September was a surprise either. What is surprising is your quotes you throw out thinking that officials were unaware or lying about this. EVERY quote you gave specifically states there was no idea that civilian aircraft would be used as missiles in an attack. Remembering that politicians are deceitful monsters, you'll notice they do NOT deny having warnings of an impending Al Qaeda attack. In fact, multiple official reports, investigations, and even Bin Laden's own public statements all make it very clear there were warnings of pending attack from Bin Laden's organization. The only denial in your quotes is specifically to the method.
Sorry, your whole act depends on people being either ignorant of the facts or shocked that politicians might hedge and be dodgy in their answers on a massively political topic...

No I'm not, I'm questioning why they felt had to lie about this. That is all. Don't put words in my mouth, or even try to think you know what motivates me please.

So, if you think that collaborating to bend the truth to deceive and trick the public to achieve a common goal is not a conspiracy I suggest you read up on the definition of what a conspiracy is. Just because I use the word "conspiracy" does not mean I'm referring to some wild, far fetched and unbelievable scenario. That's not always what a conspiracy is, that's what the general public has come to think of what a conspiracy is due to people like you that apply the most extreme definition to the word. Just like a UFO is not necessarily an alien space craft. It's that due to society, and per-conceived notions, most people automatically think of alien space ships when someone refers to seeing a UFO.

Sorry, you're smug little, "I know all the facts, and you are delusional" act is a joke. Yeah, you are far more superior to us "conspiracy nuts".

Oh, where did I say anything about Bush being in bed with Bin Laden or planting explosives in the towers? Why is it that once someone talks about a conspiracy they are automatically "crazy"? Not all of us believe what the fringe is trying to sell, my friend. But we also don't believe what is being force fed down our throats either.

New York has a space program

budzos says...

The phone/balloon are held aloft by the atmosphere. The shuttle is doing orbital velocity and re-entering the atmosphere. The shutle's moving a lot further and faster. It's like the difference in energy between skipping a stone across a pond, or placing the stone gently on the surface of the water (actually a couple inches down in the water), and letting go.

>> ^BoneRemake:

So my major thought just now was the atmosphere..
although I will go and learn for myself, right now I wonder why they did not need head shields or anything like that.
Just where oh where does the atmosphere begin exactly/end exactly, Why does a space craft from NASA need some ceramic plating while this lil doodad needed naught but shaved expanding foam.
on a side note, I think it would of made the video better if in every frame that is shown whilst someone was in frame, they would of held a hot dog in a bun.
eta- "The atmosphere has a mass of about 5 × 1018 kg, three quarters of which is within about 11 km (6.8 mi; 36,000 ft) of the surface. The atmosphere becomes thinner and thinner with increasing altitude, with no definite boundary between the atmosphere and outer space. An altitude of 120 km (75 mi) is where atmospheric effects become noticeable during atmospheric reentry of spacecraft. -wiki "

New York has a space program

DonanFear says...

The big difference is that the space shuttle has to travel really really fast (more than 17000 mph) "sideways" to stay in orbit while a balloon goes almost straight up. When coming back down a balloon-doodad can just fall straight down with a little parachute because it never reaches any significant speed.
A space shuttle has to slow down a lot and they do that by diving into the atmosphere belly-first, compressing the air in front of it. This heats up the air and slows down the shuttle.

NASA's UFO Footage [10:11]

Why do they all have to be tiny little specs of nothingness on every image, every video? Why isn't there one image that's a foreign space craft firing disruptors at the space shuttle?
CMON! It can be anything from dust on the lens, bugs that maybe hitched a ride upon launch, or any amount of billions of pieces of debris in orbit. I believe in UFOs because of their definition: Unidentified flying objects. It's way way too presumptuous to say it's some alien craft.

to me the outright dismissal of the idea that there could be alien beings outthere with ftl technology can also be interpreted as presumptuous. besides, presuming they do posess such superior technology, they could well be hidden from our sight, observing our actions since before we started nuking each other or polluting the universe with radio waves. as a matter of fact, they could well be running our governments and the global economy, which would certainly explain a lot of nonsense we're faced with these days. or don't you guys watch V ...

Shattered Horizon - Zero Gravity FPS

Nice presentation visually looks different from other games. interms of game play though it would seem to me like it would play the same as forseken ore decent . unless they have parts with gravity , to me it would seem realy cool to have space bits with 0G and then when u enter space crafts u have graverty and traditional fps action.

ether way it looks interesting enough to Warrent getting , over the droves of complaty unimaginative games on the market today.
