Biker cut off but lands safely... ish

newtboy says...

That makes sense....only if you don't understand carpool lanes.
They are designed for that lane to safely move much faster than traffic...that's why they exist at all. They have zones where you may enter or leave, nowhere else for exactly this reason. If you would counter that it's only safe if people follow the rules of the road, I'll counter that that is always the case on any road at any speed.

Some places have 80 mph limits...but they don't have carpool lanes there. Even at 65, slower than normal unimpeded traffic, he would have wrecked imo. Slowing down to the speed of non-carpool lane traffic defeats the purpose of the special, separate lane and is actually blocking traffic.

I make no assertion about any other video he posted, only this one situation. His being an asshole or not has no bearing this time.

Just because you have the right of way does not mean you are safe.

If you pause at the 12-second mark you can see the biker is going 80mph. Is the speed limit 80mph? Leading up to the accident, he's passing other cars like they are standing still. Going much faster (or slower) than traffic around you always increases your risk.

He's traveling too quick for conditions, or even for his own reactions and brakes.

Reddit thread about him: https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/6cj4i8/motorcycle_got_cut_off_on_la_freeway/dhv4h38/

The accident is the fault of the car that pulled out, but this biker could have avoided the accident altogether if he had slowed down to comparable speeds of the traffic around him.

But what would he do that for? He's a youtube asshole who took down other videos of him being an asshole who now has one of his vids go viral to the point that he makes money off it. Insurance will cover the repairs to his bike.

Look at how he drives: https://streamable.com/jewxu

He's a cocky asshole who instigates problems on the road.

So yeah, the car that pulled in front is technically at fault. That doesn't make this guy some kind of angel. It's possible he consciously allowed himself to hit the car....

I don't want to imply that this was the motorcyclists fault, because it wasn't, but that was a shit-ass reaction time on the emergency braking. You can see him roll off the throttle and grab the brake as soon as he sees the car moving over, which is good, but then it's clear the car is moving into the carpool lane and... nothing... he just keeps rolling forward...

At 0:20.5 he clearly identifies the threat, by 0:21.0 the car is in his lane, he's off the throttle, and his fingers are on the front brake, and then... he doesn't do anything... just keeps rolling at the same speed... rolling... rolling... he doesn't squeeze the front brake until well over a second and like 100 feet later around 0:22.25 when he's barely 20 feet behind the car, and even then he doesn't brake particularly hard at all.

I moto-commute on this same road and shit like this happens every single day, it happens so often that you should expect it to happen every time and react accordingly. You just have to be way better prepared for it than this. There was plenty of time for him to simply brake and avoid that guy. Plenty.

Technically!?!
The bike was in the carpool lane, where travelling faster than other traffic is expected, that's why the lane exists. He was not going inordinately fast, traffic in the fast lane was going pretty slow.
The car crossed two lanes and a double yellow line without looking or matching traffic speed in the lane(s) it was entering. Any one of those mistakes is enough to make this technically the car's fault, all 3 together leaves no question and removes the technicality completely.

100% the car's fault. Not even 1% the bike's fault. He did absolutely nothing wrong.

4 Revolutionary Riddles

Ok, so every video I've watched on this still seems to take the view that both laps are the same distance. If that's the case then it's impossible (T2 = 0, etc).

But a lap is just a revolution of the track, you don't have to run at a fixed radius (and therefore a fixed circumference).

If you increase the distance (even by a tiny amount), it is possible.
If the 1st lap is 100m and you run it in 100s, then you get 1m/s. If the second lap is 200m, then you would need to run that in 50s (V1 = 1m/s, Vavg = 2m/s, 300m @ 2m/s = 150s, 150s - 100s (for the lap you've already run).

So if you double the distance, you need to run 4 times faster.
If you triple the distance, you need to run 3 times faster.
If you run 10 times the distance, you need to run 2.2222m/s

Basically the bigger your lap the slower you can go approaching 2m/s.

Conversely, the smaller the difference the faster you need to go (e.g. for 101m, you would need to do the 2nd lap at 202m/s or around 450mph )

Oh, and the bike CAN go forwards, you just need a ridiculously low gear.

Turn 11 at 2017 Australian GP Qualifying

Like the article from Ars that @Jinx linked said, the cars have been given wider tyres to get more mechanical grip, and more downforce to get more aero grip. The net result is that they are 30km/hr faster in the corners than last year.

They are also slower on the straights, since more downforce and fatter tyres both result in more drag meaning lower top speed.

The Economics of Airline Class

spawnflagger says...

This is the 2nd video where the author got the Concorde story wrong... It became profitable 8 years into service (1984), largely due to BA raising ticket prices and making it more of a luxury. And the Concorde division remained profitable until the crash in France, when they grounded all Concordes while they investigated the root cause. After they started flying again, people were still wary to buy Concorde tickets, and airlines could get more profit out of 1st class tickets on larger, slower planes. So both BA and AF phased them out ~2003.

I have to guess that not only is drivers training no longer a requirement, but neither are the written or driving tests.
I can't fathom how people get a license and still not know things like slower traffic must keep right, passing must be on the left only, and lane changes and/or turns must be proceeded by signaling, but clearly they can. I think it's time to make the requirements more stringent.

More Evidence Trump Can't, Or At Least Won't Read

RFlagg says...

This. I'm fairly sure he can read, but I don't think he can read well. He may pass a reading test, and may read at the level most Americans can read at (though perhaps slower... unless reading tests are timed), but he clearly has issues. There was the report the other day how he wants reports to be limited to just a page or two and with lots of maps and the like, which seems to indicate he can't read well. Now, as he's pointed out, he knows lots of business leaders who can't read well and they are very smart people, and this doesn't make things bad for him as a business man, perhaps a bit funny, but as President of the United States, who has to read some serious stuff... we, the people of this Earth, are then at the mercy of his advisers on what things mean. This puts a lot of the power on Bannon and this should frighten everyone who isn't a far right fascist, it should frighten all the bread and butter Republicans and the former hard working people who voted for him in the false hope they'd get their jobs back.

Hanging out at the movie set when...

I'm struggling to figure out what the plan was here. I mean, what was the favourable outcome, given that the camera is in-line with where the car came through the truck? Obviously the speed was too high, but even had the car been slower, it still probably would have hit the camera.

Tesla Predicts a 2 Car Crash Ahead of Driver

sillma says...

Looks like the warning sounds pretty much exactly when the car directly in front moves out of the way, and the sensors see the much slower moving car in front of the SUV. So no, not magic, just the thing doing what it's supposed to. Which is great, and needs to be implemented in every car in some form, as nearly all humans are shit at driving most of the time.
