Cop Threatens Execution After Concealed Weapon Found
Cops certainly are not all bad eggs, in the sense that they don't all abuse their power over civilians, but a distressing proportion are, and they are not kept in line by anyone, so they tacitly are given this power by their supervisors, and on up the chain. It obviously hasn't even occurred to this officer that there might be consequences for the way he's treating this suspect. Cops all protect one another, good and bad. Even the "Role model cop" would circle the wagons around this guy, who's clearly abusing his power. THAT's the problem.
If abusive cops were brought to justice the same way abusive non-cops are brought to justice, these videos would be insignificant, or just sad, or even funny, like watching stupid thieves getting caught in ventilation shafts. Until that time comes, we need more public awareness and action towards fair, repsectul policing.>> ^quantumushroom:
The bad eggs are out there, but that's all they are, bad eggs. This is not the norm.
I was most surprised they searched the car without permission. Unlike the clueless Taser tards, this poor guy has a good case for suing.

Christopher Titus - the Revolution is coming, America!
Enzo, funny you should mention that. He is on a recent podcast with Marc Maron in which he talks about how his show got shafted, basically because of his big mouth and attitude. Worth a listen if you're a fan:

Why is European broadband faster and cheaper than US?
>> ^campionidelmondo:
>> ^JiggaJonson:
>> ^blankfist:
One word: government.
By that do you mean a lot of government regulations working well to benefit the people instead of letting big businesses Cleavland-steamer every one of us into financial ruin???
If so, I agree. Government.
It's true. The Government opened up the market, which is why we now enjoy fast and cheap broadband (I pay $20/month for 50mbit plus phone).
Well you get better than me. UK's garbage for broadband and is known in europe for being that way. Popular broadband company BeThere (subsidiary of o2 i believe) offers £17.99 (that's about 30(+2?) dollars?) for maximum 24 Mbit, and what you actually get depends entirely on your local exchange, they guarantee absolutely nothing. They say up to, and they mean up to. I know people who pay for "up to" 8 Mbit and get around 2.
Oh, and it's not unlimited. Most "unlimited" broadband in the UK has fair usage policies and the majority of those boil down to a hard download cap.
The worst ones? They offer things like £7 per month but a download limit of 5 gigs per month, with 5 gig topups being another 7 quid. Rediculous things like that. People who don't read up and shop around really do get the utter shaft, and even those who DO read up and shop around don't get good deals. Most of them are even owned by the same damned company too.
They're notoriously bad at administration. When my previous provider got taken over by another company, that company "renewed" my broadband contract for 12 months for DOUBLE the price i was preiously paying. They didn't tell me about the new contract though, so when i cancelled it suddenly they charged my bank for £300 contract termination fee. I didn't have £300 so the bank issued a £20 charge. Then i made another payment (thinking i still had that extra £20) and got charged £20 AGAIN and now i started getting charged for being in arrears too.
I phoned them and it took me a few days to even get rid of the 12 month contract i'd been volunteered into, getting them to pay all the charges (and phone call charges) took a good few weeks work but i was absolutely incandescent with rage.
Er, rant over! In other words, it's not all sunshine and smiles over here, broadband in the UK stinks.
Bad Idea: using a hydraulic hammer to demolish a building
>> ^arvana:
a) We can't tell from the video if this accident was fatal.
b) Regardless of what happened to the operator, I certainly wouldn't say the video is "explicit depiction of loss of human life" [FAQ].
I'm going to assume for my own peace of mind that he's ok and recovering in hospital from dust inhalation. There are plenty of times during earthquakes when people survive building collapses while inside the building.
I'll add a warning in the description, and return.
Alright, let me explain B.
There was the video on the sift a while back of a man on a scooter ramming an elevator door until the door broke and he fell to his death.
The death occurred in the elevator shaft itself, not on screen. However, it was generally agreed upon that literally watching the last 4 seconds of someones life was disrespectful and disturbing in its own right.
Bad Idea: using a hydraulic hammer to demolish a building
Yeah......something like that. Use chains to pull the supports out from a distance or push it over with something that can reach at least halfway up it's height. Better yet is a combination of both, pull the structure's supports out while pushing it in the direction the supports are gone. And throw some chains up high on it to help topple it.
They topple trees near houses by cutting a big wedge out to make it fall away from the house, cut the rest of the tree off and maintain pressure on the tree so it can't fall the other way if a big gust comes along or the tree is rotten or just some sort of freak thing where the tree tries to go wrong way. If possible they will usually cut the top off the tree off so it's easier to handle, but sometimes you can't do that when trees are unstable...like hit by lightning or broken due to storms.
And getting out of the machinery. Those things have roll cages on them that are supposed to support the weight of the vehicle if they roll over onto their side and then some. Not sure how it'd handle being punctured by rebar or narrow shafts of concrete, but it'd at least stand up to crushing better than your body.
Snuff versus non-snuff (Philosophy Talk Post)
@Lawdeedaw (regarding the external links)
I don't think snuff rule is in place to completely prevent people from seeing videos in which people die. The Sift is a friendly competition to see who can get the most votes, and the community has decided that it is in bad taste and rather callous to try to get those votes with videos that graphically depict people dying (except in certain circumstances as @lucky760 has talked about above).
So the short of it is: people are free to post a Sift Talk with an external link to a video that graphically shows someone's death, but they need to be aware that if they try to enter it in the friendly competition we know as the "Sift" that it is likely to draw extra scrutiny and may be discarded.
I agree with some of your points about the haphazard nature of how the snuff guideline is applied, but I also agree with @gwiz665 that this is an unfortunate byproduct of the fact that we decide as a community on a case-by-case basis what is or isn't appropriate. There are certainly videos on the Sift that I have lobbied for to get discarded under the snuff rule that the community has decided have enough merit to stay. And there are probably some that have been discarded that I would have argued deserved to be here. It's just the nature of the system, so to speak. Can't please all of the people, all of the time.
EDIT: Just watched the vid you posted. For what it's worth, it is not snuff by Sift standards in my book. Hugely disturbing? Yes, absolutely. But the fact that the killing takes place off-camera makes it allowable. I think it also has Siftable value as a newsworthy event--I can't find any video news stories on the topic to replace it with. And I think it was a timely and informative counter-point to all the police brutality vids that have been getting Top 15 lately. I agree you got shafted. Sorry. I would have lobbied for you if I had been aware of the controversy--I agree that if yours isn't Siftable neither are the (multiple) videos of the Seattle cop shooting the woodcarver.

Yeah, we'll have to bow out of this one. His pun quality is out of our range. Maybe we should string him up. But if someone tips off the police, we'll get shafted.
Well, just don't draw any attention to yourselves.
Rabbi faces off with Anti-Circumcision Crusader
@SDGundamX
It seems more accurate to say circumcision is partially reversible, at the expense of substantial time, discomfort, and inferior results. From your link:
Maybe some people who have already been circumcised might what to consider pursuing restoration. Most people would like more pleasurable sex.
Even though it's partially reversible to cut off children's ears or foreskins (we could grow them new ear-like tissue in a lab), I'd be very skeptical of any claim that parents should be cutting off their children's ears.
Unbelievable Goal in the Ice Hockey World Championships
There are two aspects of the rulebook that I think might apply here; from the official NHL rulebook:
80.1 High-sticking the Puck
"Cradling the puck on the blade of the stick (like lacrosse) above the normal height of the shoulders shall be prohibited and a stoppage of play shall result."
80.3 Disallowed Goal
"When an attacking player causes the puck to enter the opponent’s goal by contacting the puck above the height of the crossbar, either directly or deflected off any player or official, the goal shall not be allowed. The determining factor is where the puck makes contact with the stick. If the puck makes contact with the stick below the level of the crossbar and enters the goal, this goal shall be allowed."
The puck made contact not with the shaft, but with the blade, at the time of release; and judging by the slo-mo replay, the blade was below the height of the net, only the shaft was above the height of the net. This means that the ref's made the right call, awesome goal.
