spawnflaggerI agree with Jim Carrey that the standing ovation given to Will Smith was more offensive than the slap itself. Kudos to Chris Rock for taking the high road, and getting "on with the show" - shows a true professional. Glad his comedy tour tickets are selling out.
A lot of initial reports were calling this a punch, but it wasn't. It was a weak slap, I'm sure that Smith could have slapped much harder but that wasn't the point. It was still dumb. He should have just got on stage and asked Chris to apologize and hold up the show until he did. The dumbest part was Will actually laughed at the joke!
As far as DA prosecuting, you know he'd never see jail time, and for any monetary fine- he's already done to himself by negative reputation. Think of all the potential future roles he's lost in that 1 moment. Time to go buy an island and move there, cause he's now retired.

cloudballoon says...More likely, if Rock is to press charges. It'll be settled out of court. No one wants the hassle to drag this out in public (too risky for PR) and Rock & Smith probably don't want to piss off Hollywood either.
The DA however, should press charges. It's the only way to show people big shots are not above the law.
I had heard that not only is he selling out now, tickets are $750!! That said, in a month when the excitement dies down, who’s to say it won’t swing the other way.
And there’s the damage to his reputation, if not his career, that is also worth something. Not $500million, but you start big…who knows, maybe Will would hand it over to escape. He’s got it.
I think the appropriate measure is what would Will say was enough restitution if someone did that to his loved one, wife or child, on an international broadcast…that’s what he owes Chris’s family. That’s got to be in the hundreds of millions, not a few thousand….but I don’t decide so my opinion is moot.
Edit: really, I think the DA should press charges. He doesn’t need Chris, he’s got it on video from a dozen angles. Case closed.

cloudballoon says...I though so too. Watching the red carpet segment just before the Oscars, both my wife & I were talking about how great Jada looks bald (we don't pay attention to celebrity news, and we had no idea she got Alopecia before the slapping scandal).
I went bald once (accidentally) and due to the shape of my head, bald just doesn't look good on me, so I kind of envious of people like Jada, the Rock, etc. I'm weird I know.
Better than I could do in my prime.
I think she looks pretty good…I thought Jada looked good too. Makes me wonder why “looking forward to GI Jane 2” was seen as an insult.
Unless you have a weird shaped head, bald is beautiful.

Digitalfiend jokingly says...Am I the only one who thinks that slap was a stunt of some sort? The awkwardness of how Will slapped Chris just feels like it was premeditated and not an emotional spur of the moment thing. Then the little swagger and smirk in his walk back didn't seem to jive with someone who was angry (or enraged). Watch it closely or in slow motion. Not saying the slap didn't make contact, but it seemed...off.
The only confusing part was Will's outburst once back in his seat. That seemed more genuine and created that real sense of awkward silence.
Might explain the lack of pressing charges, the Academy's weak response, etc. Who knows...and really who cares. I'm not a fan of Chris Rock's "humour" (it's a strain for me to call him humorous) and couldn't care less about the Oscars or Will Smith. I'm more curious whether this was staged or if Will Smith really slaps like a girl...

cloudballoon says...I'm not particularly concerned what immediately happened to the slap at the Oscars. The confusion around whether it was scripted or not is understandable. And there were, are, and will have plenty of over-entitled actors/actresses acting irresponsible to the 90% of us (or maybe 50% of us, while the other 40% is just "signaling") at the Oscars, always.
Could Jada have stopped Will just by saying "it's not worth it?" Would this whole scandal happened if she didn't do the side-eyes that Will saw AFTER he laughed at the joke?
Is she partly to blame (of course not)? Who knows what headspace Will was at? It's Hollywood - where 99% of the people live 2, 3, 4 different lives behind & in front of the cameras. Not wise to judge anyone at that moment.
But what happened AFTER is more interesting. The lack of apology directly to Rock and the non-sense justification of his acceptance speech. Will & co partying the night away. Those speaks volumes to what one can make of his speech and tears.
One thing's for sure, as newtboy wrote, Smith just handed white supremacists the biggest gift one person possibly could.
