Neil deGrasse Tyson - Science in America

newtboy says...

Being able to articulate what the scientific method is, and unambiguously, unfailingly supporting it across the board should be a litmus test for politicians.
Today, I expect >1/2 don't even know what a litmus test is.

If you can't pass a 7th grade biology class, can't tell an ion from a prion, or can't tell the difference between verified scientific fact and religious dogma, that should disqualify you from any form of leadership, from the pta to the presidency. Ruling from dogmatic ignorance is always a recipe for disaster.

BACON CAUSES CANCER!!!! MCDONALDS IS GIVING FREE CANCER!

transmorpher jokingly says...

Perhaps if you did get cancer, and had to get your colon removed, you'd literally be less of an asshole? ;-)

And since you insist that we PROMOTE ALL THINGS BACON, then OK here's where the recipe begins https://youtu.be/L_dBndnNHkg?list=PLtc3iQTP5EZ_6oCLjvntAdfTP8Js-gD1c&t=97

You want to see the whole recipe right? I mean you payed for it, so might as well get the full experience.

Vance's Incredible 365 day transformation will blow you away

transmorpher says...

The fact that he's doing things the hard way is a testament to his willpower, so hat's off, but there is a much better way:

No exercise, all you can eat weight loss : https://www.nature.com/articles/nutd20173

Essentially just eat foods like this Fire Fighter recommends:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZhReouWekQ

It's so easy you'll slap yourself. Try it for 2 or 3 weeks, and see for yourself, all the recipes are free at http://ForksOverKnives.com/ or just google for "whole foods plant-based *burger/pasta/pizza/curry/burrito* " or whatever it is that you enjoy eating.

George H.W. Bush, American War Criminal

newtboy says...

Keep in mind, it was neither his genocidal tendencies nor his expansionism that were used as the public excuses to attack Saddam, it was a false narrative about a successful nuclear weapons program (and other fantasies about weapons of mass destruction) and another false narrative about his ties to and support of terrorists, both lies created by the Whitehouse.

I think we violated master Tzu's teachings and went to war not knowing our enemies or ourselves, a sure recipe for failure.

Stopped watching at "The never ending killing fields of Iraq".

Now, if the speaker goes on to accuse Bush Sr. for failing to remove Saddam after having Liberated Kuwait, I judged too quickly. I'm pretty confident though that this is just more of the revisionist history garbage blaming Bush Sr. for Iraq, rather than Saddam's campaign of genocide against his own people and his conquest of Kuwait.

I mean, if you want to rail against American exceptionalism, at least have the decency to blame the presidents prior to Bush(Carter and Reagan) who supported Saddam after the Iranian revolution, rather than the American president who finally took the right side against one of the most brutal tyrants and dictators of his time.

The Five Eyes: How the multinational spy network has grown

newtboy says...

I must confuse them greatly, having no cell phone, no buddy or contacts lists, no calendar, and no social media accounts (besides here).

Also, my brother and I like to send each other encrypted pie recipes labeled "virus coming along nicely" or "timeline for infected monkey release", so there's that.

We explain "Nordic Socialism" to Trump

MilkmanDan says...

Even if Americans wouldn't accept the level of taxes and other wealth distribution methods that happen in Denmark, I think that we'd almost certainly be net better off / "happier" / have a higher standard of living if we moved in that direction at least a little bit.

Yes, Americans want to be rich. But, the 1% is going to be relatively equally happy whether they are 10 times, 100 times, or 1000 times richer than the 98th percentile just below them. Today, that disparity is massive. In eras that the GOP likes to remember as the good ol' days, say the 1950s, rich was still rich but nowhere near as far beyond the middle class as it is today.

High(er) taxes, particularly on income in those top percentile tax brackets, allow for the superior infrastructure, health care, and educational opportunities that benefit *everyone* and allow for the "American Dream" of anyone being able to make it big with a good idea, a lot of hard work, and a little luck. I don't think that recipe for success actually pans out in modern America, and that is a shame.

Hypersonic Missile Nonproliferation

scheherazade says...

Hubris.

WW2 japan had fighters that flew faster, climbed quicker, had bigger guns, and turned quicker (a6m vs f4f). And we had intel reports that told us, but we ignored them because "we have the best stuff and nobody else can compete".

You see the same stuff today with China. China makes all of our microchips, all of our microelectronics, most of which are designed over there anyways (companies here just ask for a widget that does X and Y, and Chinese companies design+make it), yet we act like as if they are some technologically retarded place that only knows how to steal ip.

Russia has been at the forefront of rocketry since ww2. Nobody has systems that compare to their consistency and reliability. Not even the U.S.. The idea that Russia can't make a hyper sonic missile before the U.S., because it's Russia, is a non sequitur.

Also, Russia broke up as a country because guaranteed government jobs for all citizens, where you can't be fired and performance is not important, is going to destroy any economy. No one will produce, shelves will be empty, and money will be no more than paper. Combine that with making private business illegal (preventing people from economically helping themselves), and you have a recipe for economic disaster and social discontent.

This missile exists to swat down carrier groups on the cheap.
We're gonna need some powerful lasers, or our own hyper sonic interceptors, or else proliferation would instantly leave us isolated in the Americas (vis-a-vis power projection via conventional weaponry). Our only option for projecting power would be reduced to nuclear or nothing.

"To date, he says, the US has conducted tests on this type of missile system but to his knowledge none have been successful, flying for just a few seconds. "

Basically, Putin made a laughable claim that Russia already has a mach 10 missile, so China and the USA jumped down the rabbit hole.

Kind of like when Reagan started up the SDI star wars BS. Which some people believe led to the USSR dramatically boosting their defense spending, nigh bankrupting themselves and breaking up as a country.

HowToBasic - How To Make Ramen

Ashenkase says...

This is a very basic recipe, I would suggest however that his might be an even easier procedure:

https://imgur.com/a/6wwB2w5#mangR8C

If I may be so bold there are a few tips I can offer:

Step 1: Fill your sink with warm sudsy water.
Step 2: Do all of your dishes and clean your work surface
Step 3: Drain the sink and refill it with sudsy water
Step 4: Start cooking
Step 5: If you dirty a dish or utensil, clean it RIGHT AWAY!
Step 6: Goto step 3 and repeat until you are finished cooking

* With cooking, go for it. You can only get better the more times you try.

* Double sinks should be the standard, if you only have one of those huge single tubs one should get their head examined. 1 sink for clean, one sink for rinse, one rack to dry. *rant over.

* Ramen, for me, is tied with Thai and Indian. It is in its essence Umami. Just don't use as much noodle as this f**k tard did at the end of the video

noims said:

Not sure I'd be able to make this all that quickly, but I agree it would take longer to clean up.

I do have a sudden inexplicable craving for noodles, though. It is pretty late, so I might just have a bath.

Police Choke & Body Slam Man After Prom

ChaosEngine says...

Choking is a perfectly valid submission technique for someone posing a threat to the cop or other people.

I'm not saying that happened here, because there's no context in the video.

Clearly, the guy is resisting arrest, but we have no idea whether a) the arrest was warranted in the first place or b) whether this was a proportionate response.

Neither can you deny that there's a strong possibility this wouldn't have happened if the guy was white.

As for the cop, he should be suspended with pay while the investigation is carried out. We apply the same "innocent until proven guilty" standard to police that we do to everyone else. On the flipside of that, if he's found guilty of misconduct, he shouldn't just be fired, he should face jail time for assault and abuse of power.

Finally, suggesting that crowds should "turn on police" is a recipe for disaster. There are zero good outcomes from that. At best, you have police unable to do their jobs in case of crowd violence, and at worst, you end up with people being killed.

No matter how unjustified you feel your treatment is, it's important to remember that resisting arrest is very much at your own risk. The law varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but even where it IS allowed, if the arrest later turns out to be lawful, you will be charged with an additional crime.

Since when is choking an appropriate submission technique? Should be fired, and none of this suspended with pay bullshit. That's just a holiday.

Good luck, that's a patented Skinner family recipe not available to the public.
