Why Home Ownership is Actually a Terrible Investment
Adam really does ruin everything - in this case, it's his credibility.
There are many reasons home ownership is better than renting - not the least being that you have far more flexibility in your lifestyle than a renter would. And while you are paying off a mortgage (which, in part, is subsidized by the mortgage deduction on your income tax) you are building equity and paying off the bank with progressively "inflated" dollars over the life of the mortgage (that's why they charge "interest"). The rents go up with the inflation, the mortgage payment doesn't (unless you are fool enough to buy into an adjustable rate mortgage). In the end, if you are careful and smart about when and where you buy, the home is nominally worth more than you paid (in inflated dollars - and possibly in constant dollars) and that value can be recovered if and when necessary. Renting, you walk away with a bunch of receipts...
Of course, if you are lazy and irresponsible in when and where you buy and how you maintain the home, then you could again walk away with nothing...

Fun fact, most thermal paper receipts (the vast majority of receipts you'll ever touch) are coated with BPA.

This shop apparently doesn't trust their employees either. Otherwise why have the receipts print onscreen?

Package Thief Gets A Taste of His Own Medicine
I think in the US, some neighborhoods are considered "safe", and others not. It's probably driven by statistics and reports of lost/stolen packages by customers.
As for being home and the package still being at the door, some packages don't require a signature of receipt or person-to-person delivery, it could have been outgoing mail, or they were in the back when the postman rang. The most likely reason is that most delivery people are too lazy/busy/overworked that they will just assume you're not home because (statistically) most people aren't during the day, they'll dutifully ring the doorbell, drop the package, and hoof it back to their vehicle to get to the next address as fast as possible.
Not entirely their fault. I've seen those poor dudes out running around on duty at 9pm at night now.
What I don't get is who leaves packages at your door, particularly if you're home like this couple was. Is this an American thing? When I'm not home for a package delivery whether it's Canada Post, UPS, or Purolator I get a notice of attempted delivery and an address to go to to pick it up myself.

Haven't seen this one in circulation yet:
police detaining a person for no reason
Except he did state that he doesn't smoke and has never smoked once in his life, which would kind of imply that he wasn't smoking. But I doubt even a simple answer of no would have made a difference because she later states that she SAW him smoking, probably betting that if it came down to her word against his she would win out.
The document signing bit had me wondering a little, by signing are you just acknowledging the receipt of the citation? Or by signing it are you actually admitting to something? Otherwise why are they trying to strong arm him into signing with threats of bigger penalties?
Finally, the devils advocate in me finds the Libertarian rants a little suspicious and can't help but wonder if maybe he was smoking because he was cop trolling so he could make a standing up to the man video.
As usual, the "victim" escalated things for no good reason. First by ignoring the cop, then by refusing to cooperate and being confrontational. And then he becomes frustrated when they start ignoring his questions.
The entire situation could have been avoided if he had simply and politely stated that he wasn't smoking when first asked. It's amazing what a little bit of courtesy and common sense can achieve. Just because you have the legal right to act like a douche doesn't mean you should act like a douche.
Federal Income Tax is illegal, and Americans need to know. (Documentaries Talk Post)
Any tax that is paid to the "government" directly is a "direct tax". According to the US Constitution, a "direct tax" has to be apportioned to the states. The 16th Amendment supposedly changed that. It moved the income tax from a direct tax to an "indirect" tax, and both the Brushaber and the Stanton case, the SCOTUS said that the "income tax" was an indirect tax on "gains and profits from labor or other corporate activity." That's is the meaning of "income" in the income tax". It is supposed to apply only to "gain" from corporate activity. Your wages or receipts for your personal labor is not "taxable income" unless you work directly for the Federal Government, live in a Federal Zone, receive overseas income, or live overseas and receive income". These are activities that are under the direct jurisdiction of the Federal Government.
