Conductor scares two girls who were walking on the tracks

cryptoz says...

I fix locomotives, when idling they don't sound much louder then a semi idling so if the wind is in their face and they are talking I doubt they would hear it... If your talking about walking down the track, ya after some time with Loco I now walk beside the tracks and if it's been longer then 2 minutes since the last time I looked over my shoulder, I get mad at myself for being so stupid. Best stay at least 1 arm length from rail or just avoid altogether

Cyclists Tempt Darwin

Cyclists Tempt Darwin

ulysses1904 says...

Two things I learned living next to Amtrak rail in Mystic, CT, unless you're near a road crossing they are dead silent until they are right up on you or blasting their horn. So I learned never to walk on the tracks with your back to train traffic. Also it's easy to forget that they are a lot wider than the rails themselves. I was sitting on a rail bridge drinking a beer, heard a train coming and assumed I had plenty of clearance. I look up at the last second and realize I'm going to get killed, jumped down onto a bunch of boulders at the last second. Painful lesson that I never forgot.

Mean Tweets – Avengers Edition

Payback says...

Fair point.

Not that I'm confused, it's just I guess my definition of racism is mired in reality, rather than philosophy.

I apologize to the rest of the Sift for continuing on this thread. It's really off the rails from the video content.

I think you may be confusing racism with institutional racism....the latter fits your definition much more closely.

A Closer Look: Trump's Michigan Rally Goes Off the Rails

In Nepal, waterfalls are roads

eric3579 says...

This is the Besisahar-Chamé Road( https://goo.gl/SeMX4Q ) in the Manang District of Nepal.

When i was traveling in Nepal (over 20 yrs ago) I took a bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara on a then dirt road that had crazy cliffs and no guard rails at all. We also road on top of the bus with the luggage on the trip back to Kathmandu. It's crazy how close they had to drive to the cliffs edge. Looking at the road now, on google maps, it seems quite harmless as it's all paved.

2 Kids die in Hot Car Black Parent Charged White Parent Not!

newtboy says...

So many red herrings, cries of "wolf!", that I'm hyper suspicious.

According to this report/video, it's about accident vs intentional, not white vs black, not man vs woman.
Both cases went to grand juries, so the seeming disparity is not so institutionalized either, maybe cultural, maybe fact based.
Also, the father's charges likely to be dropped to culpable negligence or nothing.

Edit:apparently he pled to manslaughter for probation.
I think you are off the rails @C-note.

Parking Karma Served Cold

Briguy1960 says...

Dick move by the jerks in the red car.
I hate bad or selfish parking myself with a passion but in this case she just may have over compensated for the railing and judging by how empty the lot looks it probably didn't seem like a big deal to her at the time.
Either way it's not like she parked in the center of 2 spots which is the one that gets me.

New Rule: Distinction Deniers

newtboy says...

Because it isn't, and a huge movement wants us to irrationally ignore that fact, to all our detriment. That's what his argument is about. That is never acceptable, and should be railed against with vigor.

ChaosEngine said:

Sure, but why does he then spend the rest of the argument talking about how one isn't as bad as the other?

Ladder truck

radx says...

Like accidentally pushing something over the edge of the platform? Or not securing the cargo and have it shaken overboard by vibrations during the move? Or having the top of the ladder come loose from the railing? Or the railing itself?

Nah, it's fine, just fine.

But I am curious. I have had to move a few times, and I have helped friends move a few times as well, for a total of maybe ~15 times. And the light stuff they put on the platform in this video has never bothered me. Granted, it has never been higher than 12th floor for me, but hauling bulky, "low-weight" stuff downstairs -- no issues. It's the heavy stuff through narrow stairwells that's been a pain in the behind. Yet they don't seem to have a net or tension belts attached to it, so do they use it for bulkier/heavy stuff as well?

Am i the only one who sees a potential accident?

It does however seem like a cool way to get shit up and down.

Penn Jillette: The Case For Libertarianism

Drachen_Jager says...

Libertarianism is for teenagers and idiots.

Any well-adjusted adult with any ability for critical thinking can see how stupid this is. Even his premise is idiotic. The government doesn't use guns to enforce parking violations (for example) they certainly don't use guns to provide healthcare to people. When was the last time a bus driver pointed a gun at you and said, "Get on the bus, it's public transit, cars are illegal now!"

Just because America has a lousy political system and therefore generally a string of bad governments, does not mean government is bad. It just means American government is bad. The countries with the highest levels of citizen happiness, the greatest spread of wealth, the highest education standards, the longest lifespans, the lowest infant mortality rates, the lowest crime rates, all have the kinds of governments Libertarians rail against.

Libertarianism, in summary, is childish, stupid, and immoral. No big surprise @bobknight33 is a fan then.

Colbert Fixes CNN's Apple (Trump Vs Fact) Ad

RFlagg says...

CNN uses more facts in a day than FOX has total since the days I watched it day in and day out and railed against the commie left, and the dangers of the Demoncrats some 11 years ago (here's a prior version of me on an account I couldn't recover: https://videosift.com/video/Fox-News-takes-Rep-Wexler-from-the-Colbert-Report-out-of-context-I-enjoy-cocaine-because#comment-12957 ... I thought there was another post under that account where I blasted evolution but I don't see it)... had I not opened my eyes and started vetting, I'd probably be right there with you though, so you go and do your thing.

Crazy Nut Shot

SDGundamX says...

Goddamn, my nuts retracted just from the sound that kick made.

Had a friend in high school who skateboarded and messed up a rail slide. Landed square on the rail on his nuts and blew out one of his testicles. Before the doctors removed it, it had swollen to the size of a grapefruit. I imagine the guy here probably sustained a similar injury and had to have at least one testicle removed.

Good news is you can still have kids with only one testicle--my friend has two daughters. But damn, if that isn't one of the most painful things to experience I don't know what is.
