Stop Voting for the Lesser of Two Evils

ChaosEngine says...

The problem is that the American election process is so fucked that calling it a democracy is actually getting to be a bit of a stretch these days.

The fact that @entr0py recognizes that his (her?) vote doesn't count should be a massive red flag. It is beyond stupid that in 2016, votes for a countrywide position (i.e. president) are split up at a local level.

And that's before you even get to the problems of how much first past the post voting sucks

The presidential elections should be carried out under STV

Unfortunately, until you get some election reform.... you're kinda stuck with it.

Sorry, but if your choice is Clinton or Trump/Cruz? You HAVE to vote lesser of two evils. (although, I'm still hoping that if Bernie doesn't get the democration nomination, he might still run as a 3rd party)

Stop Voting for the Lesser of Two Evils

Syrian Refugees | Full Frontal with Samantha Bee |

transmorpher says...

That's exactly what I mean though. The media seems to think that either you're a terrorist lover, or a racist.

When in reality most people are neither, they are just regular people that have legitimate concerns. But the media (and politicians) keeps blowing both angles out of proportion and in the mean time the legitimate concerns aren't being discussed or dealt with.

(I didn't mention the right wing portion in my original comment, since this is after all a left wing video).

00Scud00 said:

Oh look another regressive leftist conservative oversimplifying a complicated issue. Apparently if you don't treat the refugees like a grandma terrorist trying to cross the road destroy America, then you're a right wing racist islamophobe stupid bleeding heart Liberal.

I used to think of myself as left wing right wing. But not since it's become synonymous with stupidity.

That's how easy it is to flip what you just said and it sounds just as accurate.

Asian flush, explained.

MilkmanDan says...

Hmm, interesting. My Mom doesn't drink very often, but when she does she gets pretty close to beet red -- more intense than any of the people in the video. I don't think that hers is tied to any particular sort of alcohol; I've seen it happen with beer, wines, and cocktails.

Mine is sporadic, and less intense than any of the people in the video. Sporadic enough and I don't drink often enough to have a feeling for whether or not it might be associated with any particular sort of alcohol. So if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that my Mom's reaction is more likely to be asian flush than mine; but on the other hand since both of our reactions are probably genetically related (due to our shared genes), maybe neither of them is asian flush. I dunno.

Some quick googling definitely suggests that caucasians can have "asian flush" also, just at proportionally lower rates. I don't lose any sleep over it (don't drink often enough), but it is still interesting.

Jinx said:

I often get a immediate headaches and flushing when drinking wine, prosecco, beer etc etc. For ages I thought it might be asian flush, but now I think it is more likely some sort of reaction to sulfites or histamines, especially since spirits have little or no effect on me (besides, you know, getting drunk...)

How To Lose Weight In 4 Easy Steps!

Khufu says...

ya, sort of. Way over simplified. For example, drinking orange juice is not a ton of calories, but all that sugar in your bloodstream spikes your insulin response and you suddenly become an efficient fat storing machine. (unless you just did a heavy workout in which case you become a muscle building machine if paired with protein.)

Also, when you work out correctly your base metabolism will be WAY faster than before, and calorie counting really doesn't matter much at that point. Only thing that matters is the quality and composition of the food. Low/no sugar, equal proportions of protein/fat/unrefined carbs. etc.

Also,

Love the Conan cameo! King of creepy;)

How to lose weight in 1 easy step: Eat fewer calories than you burn.

You can increase the number of calories you can eat by being more active, or lay around like a blob and just eat less. It works.

Massive Methane Leak-Ecological Disaster In California

Why the Electoral College Ruins Democracy

VoodooV says...

electoral college is fine. It's gerrymandering and "winner take all" that fuck it up. The founders are right about direct democracy not being good in situations like this.

Eliminate those two things and the electoral college is fine and it would eliminate swing states as well.

Popular vote would totally fuck over any area that doesn't have a high population density. I'd be fine with tweaking the voter-to-electoral vote proportions though and get rid of the "electors" That would be reasonable.

It may need tweaks and refinements, but the overall concept is still valid.

The True Story of Thanksgiving

Barbar says...

After seeing the colony freeze, go hungry, suffer plague, have it's foreign support removed, get swindled by outsiders, and eventually descend into near-anarchy, Bradford made the following entries:

All this whille no supply was heard of, neither knew they when they might expecte any. So they begane to thinke how they might raise as much torne as they could, and obtaine a beter crope then they had done, that they might not still thus languish in miserie. At length, after much debate of things, the Govr (with the advise of the cheefest amongest them) gave way that they should set corve every man for his owne perticuler, and in that regard trust to them selves; in all other things to goe on in the generall way as before. And so assigned to every family a parcell of land, according to the proportion of their number for that end, only for present use (but made no devission for inheritance), and ranged all boys and youth under some familie. This had very good success; for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more torne was planted then other waise would have bene by any means the Govr or any other could use, and saved him a great deall of trouble, and gave farr better contente. The women now wente willingly into the feild, and tooke their litle-ons with them to set torne, which before would aledg weaknes, and inabilitie; whom to have compelled would have bene thought great tiranie and oppression.

The experience that was had in this commone course and condition, tried sundrie years, and that amongst godly and sober men, may well evince the vanitie of that conceite of Platos and other.ancients, applauded by some of aater times; -that the taking away of propertie, and bringing in communitie into a comone wealth, would make them happy and $orishing; as if they were wiser then God. For this comunitie (so farr as it was) was found to breed much confusion and discontent, and retard much imployment that would have been to their benefite and comforte. For the yong-men that were most able and fitte for labour and servise did repine that they should spend their time and streingth to worke for other mens wives and children, with out any recompence. The strong, or man of parts, had no more in devission of victails and cloaths, then he that was weake and not able to doe a quarter the other could; this was thought injuestice. The aged and graver men to be ranked and equalised in labours, and victails, cloaths, etc., with the meaner and yonger sorte, thought it some indignite and disrespect unto them. And for mens wives to be commanded to doe servise for other men, as dresing their meate, washing their cloaths, etc., they deemd it a kind of slaverie, neither could many husbands well brooke it. Upon the poynte all being to have alike, and all to doe alike, they thought them selves in the like condition, and ove as good as another; and so, if it did not cut of those relations that God hath set amongest men, yet it did at least much diminish and take of the mutuall respects that should be preserved amongst them. And would have bene worse if they had been men of another condition. Let pone objecte this is mens corruption, and nothing to the course it selfe. I answer, seeing all men have this corruption in them, God in his wisdome saw another course fiter for them.

Spring Valley High "Cop" violently assaults black teen girl

newtboy says...

I think you gave the easy answer...call her parents. I bet you anything that if mama got on the phone and told her to leave class, she would do it right away. That makes way more sense than calling officer slam (his nickname at the school) to re-escalate a situation that had already calmed down.

Actually, she was not being arrested. She was only being removed, at first. At least that's what's been reported. That means that, at least at first, she was not 'resisting arrest', only 'resisting removal'.

I do agree, force is a FINAL resort, rightfully in the hands of police. My issue is it's often used as a PRIMARY resort (meaning it's often the first thing tried). There were MANY options available to the cop besides violence against a child, he didn't try anything once his command was ignored except unnecessary violence. For instance, he could have, with less force and no injury to anyone, dragged the girl and her desk out of the room and waited her out in the hallway, but instead he chose to react with severe violence to being 'disrespected' by a child.

Saying she 'brought it on herself', to me, is the same as saying abused women 'bring it on themselves' by not capitulating fast enough to their abusive spouses, and abused children 'bring it on themselves' by not being perfect at all times.
Even if you want to call what she did 'resisting arrest' (which I think I've already debunked, but may still be questioned), the force used was SO out of proportion and unnecessary that this officer has already been banned from all schools in the state, and will likely lose his job and money in the end. If her fellow students had not risked the same treatment by pulling out their phones and recording his actions, we would never have heard about this, and the poor girl would have a record for assaulting a police officer instead of an FBI investigation against the officer. That sounds like one more instance where always on-body cams might have defused the situation, because KNOWING he was on camera, I bet he would not have acted so rashly against a calm, non violent child.

EDIT: He's now been fired.

ChaosEngine said:

Honestly, there's no easy answer here.

First, allowing teachers to use violence against students (aka corporal punishment) is barbaric and wrong and out of the question.

There are then escalating levels of disciplining a student who is disruptive. My question is why the girls parents weren't called before the police.

Yeah, she was being a pain in the arse, but it's not a disciplinary issue not a criminal one.

Ultimately, force is the final resort and is rightfully in the hands of the police. In this case, I feel like an excessive level of force was used, but if she is resisting arrest (and she certainly appears to be), then she really is bringing it on herself.

Ronda Rousey Demolishes Feminist Reporters Pay Gap Question

Trancecoach says...

Well, people who get paid $15/HR are typically being paid more proportionally to what they bring in relative to MMA stars, do they not?

Anyway, you could do the research and find out the answer to your question, if you truly cared to know.

I think that's a reasonable stance to have - but the unasked question is do women get paid the same proportion of what they bring in compared to male fighters - I don't know.

Adam Ruins Everything: Polygraph Tests

Lawdeedaw says...

I don't assume anything more than Adam is assuming. He even says police don't believe in it yet claims it is believed in...

And what are you saying about Africa? I made the point to say,
A-Some Africans believe in something, but most do not. It should not be attributed to their population at large.
B-In this same manner a relatively few (even 1/2 million Americans is a paltry sum, since our population is in the hundred millions) Americans believe in lie detectors.

I did not imply anything more. Nothing about educating, nothing about anything. It was a comparison. I guess you could infer it, but then I am fine with videos like this (So long as they don't blow the proportions out of proportions.)

Again, my point is clear. A very minor amount of people believe. Just like a flat earth is still believed in. Unfortunately people lose perspective of HUGE numbers, like millions. So yeah, there is that.

newtboy said:

Unfortunately, I disagree. Far too many people believe lie detectors work, in the same way many believe finger prints are completely unique and identifying them is a science...it's not, that's why computers can't be used to identify fingerprints, it takes a human 'fingerprint artist'. Even many law enforcement agencies still use polygraphs as factual tools.

Wait...so in your second paragraph you admit that many probably really believe in lie detectors...but because that doesn't make them degenerates.....um.....what?!? If only SOME Africans believe raping a virgin cures AIDS, you seem to be saying that educating them about their mistaken belief is dumb and a thing to ridicule...ignoring the immense damage those few can do with their mistaken beliefs.

So, you have personal experience with the fallacy of lie detectors, and so you assume everyone knows they don't work? You give others too much credit, I think.

Many law enforcement agencies still treat polygraph results as fact, and have actually tried many times to have them admitted in court as evidence....just like fingerprints, eye witness identification, and even psychics. perhaps most know it's pseudo science, but enough don't know, or don't understand what that means, that pounding it into their heads that it's junk is not just reasonable, it's a necessity.

Hero Defends a Defenseless Blind Kid

SDGundamX says...

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but any DA in the U.S. worth his salt is going to look at that video and realize s/he has to press charges in the event the bully dies. Why? Because it is involuntary manslaughter.

The "hero" sucker punches the attacker, which is an unlawful act that results in a death. Sure, the "hero's" defense would be that was defending the blind kid, but self-defense in the U.S. requires the use of force to be reasonable and in proportion to the threat (see here and in particular here for the laws in California regarding the defense of others). For instance, you can't just pull out a gun and shoot someone because they punched you and then claim self-defense. You can only use enough "reasonable" force to stop the attack. It's not the DA's job to determine whether the "hero" acted in a manner "reasonable" and proportional to the threat--that's the jury's job after being presented with all the evidence.

lucky760 said:

Actually, no. It would be unlikely that he'd face any charges.

The law allowing for self-defense even makes killing an offender allowable if they are a grave imminent threat to you or someome else.

Repeatedly punching a blind person as hard as you can in the head falls under that umbrella. I think even if he shot the fucker he'd be in the clear.
