Why People Get Rage Against the Machine Wrong
@BSR wut?
I wanted this video to be more insightful than it is in actuality.
And why the pretentious old timey television overlay on everything?

I'm a pretty big fan of Tool, and Maynard (singer for Tool, APC, and Puscifer). Weird / eccentric, but very deep and meaningful. I've been waiting for a new Tool album for a long time, but this one from APC wasn't really on my radar in advance even though I like other albums of theirs also. Then these singles hit, and they grabbed me right away.
The full impact takes longer to absorb, for me at least, with Maynard's songs. Usually I don't pay much attention to lyrics, but he always puts a lot of depth and breadth in. I guess I might think that was pretentious with other bands/artists, but seems like he really enjoys hearing different listeners take away different messages without one/his being "correct".
Glad you enjoyed them also!
Thanks so much for writing those descriptions for The Perfect Circle songs you posted. Your descriptions made me want to listen to each song. I really appreciate you taking the time. The lyrics were also a must. Such interesting songs. Thanks
10/10 for how to sift a video

Woman Tries to Get a Free Ride
"I mainly do it for the creative outlet it offers me"
My pretentiousness meter just went off the scale. You're an uber driver... there's no "creative outlet" here. You are literally a stop-gap until the law allows them to use automated vehicles.
Conan: Jordan Schlansky's Masterful Improv Scene
Normally he is a pretentious twat, and there was some of that in there, (van gaaghhht, really?) but he made a good case for Star Wars for sure.
Nerdwriter - How Not To Adapt A Movie
It was definitely dumbed down thematically though, especially from 1st/2nd GiG. While they were pretty pretentious (e.g. 'second order simulacra'), at least they were full of things to think about. The whole 'give consent' theme was as far as I can tell introduced in the adaptation and immensely cringe inducing.
What also irritated me is how they created a weird mish mash of the seperate Ghost in the Shell stories for no good reason. Why did they have to combine the 2nd GiG antagonist with the original movie's key plot scenes? It was just strange and unnecessary.
I don't at all mind the westernisation / white lead. Felt that controversy was nonsense. It's a Hollywood adaptation, why even bother remaking it if you're not going to have a new take on it or adapt it to be more familiar to local (American / English) audiences?
Same thing with the Netflix Death Note adapation. No idea if it will actually be any good but couldn't care less that they moved the location to the US and made the lead characters white. There are already multiple Japanese live action Death Note movies with Japanese leads. What's the point in another?
I liked the movie adaptation. That said, if you have seen the various iterations of Ghost in the Shell, they don't seem tied to any common theme other than the basic one of whether or not a person's ghost (soul,id) can remain intact in a body that is heavily changed with cybernetics. The live action movie held that theme as well.
How Much Do You REALLY Know About Autism?
You may be right, no harm done. Other than me rolling my eyes because yet another person is suffering from “syndrome-itis”, and now they have a $10 word that magically elevates, explains and excuses their traits. It just strikes me as shallow and pretentious as someone who gets a Kanji tattoo without knowing shit about the culture.
Then again it may just me the Gemini in me. haha
I hear ya. Similar thing with people who proudly announce they are OCD because they clean up.
but... is it hurting anybody? Is it such a bad thing that people apparently seek some sort of commonality with those on the spectrum where previously they might have tried to distance themselves from any comparison? That isn't rhetorical btw. I genuinely don't know whether that kind of appropriation is just annoying, or damaging, or even perhaps beneficial.
I Can't Show You How Pink This Pink Is
Few people are more pretentious than artists... or those who THINK they are artists.
Baby Driver -- Opening Scene (Amazing car chase)
Dare I say, ya'll missing the point. It's a getaway movie staring a 2006 Subaru WRX. Not an Austin, not an Audi, not a Jag. The folks acting take a back seat. Pretentious this is not, fun it is.
More boxer engine notes!
Oats Studios - Volume 1 - Rakka
Gonna sound like a pretentious hipster here but...
I preferred his earlier work.
Ghost In The Shell - Trailer #2
I'm more relating it to the Stand Alone Complex series, particularly the second season which is what the adaptation seems to be based on from the trailers.
It is clearly impossible for them to cram the content of that 26 episode series into a movie and I'm frankly not sure why they decided to adapt it rather than the original movie.
That had plenty of discussion about simulations, emergent phenomena and group think. Definitely bordered on pretentiousness (there was an episode which adapted Taxi Driver) but still very enjoyable.
My memory of the original movie is that it was that there was about 5 minutes of the characters philosophizing on the difficulty of self-identity in a cyber world amid an hour and a half of sexy sci-fi robot murder sprees. I think they can match that.
Alien: Covenant - Official Red Band Trailer
The overly zoomed in footage, and the lighting look very SyFy channel to me
It's visually very cheap looking.
The story looks a bit pretentious from what little they show (just like Prometheus). Neil Blomkamps script seems a lot more appealing to me - to finally see the company make their bio-weapons.
Why You Should Drink More Whiskey
Yeah, most of it was pretty pretentious and douchey. Although the line about whiskey preventing the Irish from taking over the world might have made milk come out of my nose, had I been drinking any.
Expert Glass Blower, Matthew Cummings
Hmmmm... Pretentious is exactly the right word for this.
Pretty but oh my God pretentious. Hipsters everywhere are probably lining up for this.

Sorry, but ... huh?
I thought British people pronounced it "left-tenant." Never heard it pronounced any other way.
Then again, having been to Baw-th, I felt terribly pretentious saying Baw-th and not Baa-th, like a true provincial American.
Who is Gruber?
Naw - this is no "Gruber".
