Mars Curiosity Descent - WOW This is Beautiful!

Fletch says...

If you look closely near the bottom the screen (about an inch above the lower edge of the video on my monitor) at the 1:20 mark, just left of center, you can see the heat shield hit and the subsequent plume of dirt that it creates. Watch it in 1080p (full screen) for the clearest view.

Heat Shield, Meet Mars

Yes, the dust plume of this impact triggered some initial speculation.

Edit: No, wait. I was wrong. The dust plume in question was the skycrane impact, not the heat shield.

Was this also the thing that caused the odd-shaped plume in some of the first pics that was there for a moment and then disappeared? The conspiracy nuts immediately claimed it was a structure and that NASA was editing the pics to remove it. Goes to show: no matter what you say to a nut, they will continue to come up with the most outlandish explanation for stuff, even when faced with facts and reason...

Boeing 767 - Emergency Landing With No Landing Gear

Ghostly says...

Translation I did for the fun of it. The reporters are a bit chaotic and babbling -_-;;

Man: The plane flown by airline Lot, is one which has undergone many modernisations, and even if it is 5, 10 or 12 years old well that is...
Women: (cuts in) The plane is landing, we have footage. It looks like the emergency landing attempt is successful. It landed without the landing gear.
Man : (talking over woman) It looks like it's landing on a cushion of foam.
Woman: (continuing to talk simultaneously) a foam cushion, yes that's right that's what was prepared.
Man: That's also the reason for what's happening behind the plane at this moment it is plumes of vaporised foam or other liquids. Ah it seems it is now scraping the runway with the right engine, because it's sparking.
Woman: (cutting in) Yes but it is after all as the Pawel Frondczak, spokesman for the state fire department said, the runway has been coated with a special foam in preparation, and it seems this was a wise move and plane has now landed, stopped and nothing has happened.
Man: And the most important thing now is the next 20-30 seconds, ladies and gentlemen, you'll see in a moment how quickly the fire trucks will arrive on the scene. These are special modern fire trucks which are capable of accelerating up to 140km/h on this runway, so that they can reach the plane as soon as possible. And in a moment they will probably be dousing it with fire extinguishing foam, in particular, though we cannot see in this shot, the engine on the right side of the plane which scraped the runway will be among the first sections to be doused with foam.

9/11/2001 Memories ... (History Talk Post)

JiggaJonson says...

I was involved in journalism through most of my high school career and that morning we had just received a large volume of our latest issue that the printer neglected to stuff (or insert) with one of our advertisements.

We had just begun getting into the groove of working when a teacher from across the hall came over and in a flustered voice, he stammered "HEY put your TV on!" and then scurried back to his classroom. My fellow students and I looked at each other a bit confused as my journalism adviser clicked on the set hanging from the ceiling.

I can't speak for the others there but my confusion intensified when I saw that one World Trade Center had a gaping hole in it and plumes of smoke peppered the air near the breach. "Again this is live footage we're showing you now..." the newscaster said.

There was a mosaic of "What's happening," "Did a bomb explode," "Did the newscaster say attack," and "I hope everyone is ok," that went on while we slowly and robotically continued stuffing our advertisements in our newspaper.

All that stopped when the second plane hit. The room let out a collective ghasp and we all were pushed back by some kind of invisible wave. The kid right across from me repeated "Oh my god!" two or three times to break the silence as we continued watching and listening, and feeling helpless to do anything about what we were seeing.

Unforgettable: Japan Tsunami sweeps across Roads, Towns?

Haiti, Chile, New Zealand, and now Japan? Is the earth trying to shake us off or what?

Don't forget the new volcanic activity in Hawaii...the plates are a'moving, and the magma plume's looking for a new path of least resistance. All in all, if there's a message, it's that we should appreciate the period of relative climatic and geological stability that have given us these wonderful tools and toys, and we should dedicate ourselves to do whatever is necessary to hold onto them a little while longer. Perhaps one should be using them less as toys, and more as tools.

Illegal to dig the sand on Florida beaches?

geo321 says...

75% of the oil is gone.
Can we study the oil plume's in the water?
No the microbes are eating them and there are no oil plumes.
How much oil is going to reach the shore?
The dispecsents have succeeded and an insignificant amount of oil reached the shore.
Can I see how much oil came to shore and got washed over by sand?.............

What Falling From Space Looks Like

kceaton1 says...

By the time it gets to about the 3:50 area you can hear the whole thing groaning just from the stress. Also, at 4:40 (you can see it before) is the smoke plume in the far back the launch origin? Might be the other booster, but that plume looked like it was screwed up by atmospherics.

/edit- Definitely not the other booster.

Neil Tyson On Humanity's Chances Of Interaction With Aliens

Farhad2000 says...

I can see what he's saying but I don't really buy that argument totally.

We share 90% of our DNA with all life because at the end of it all we all emerged from the same spark of life millions of years ago. We share DNA with almost all living things.

After that, let's think about it, Neil's arguement essentially levels all humans to the same level i.e. I can be as smart as Stephen Hawking. I believe that the difference between the average human being and Stephen Hawking is far larger then the difference between the average human and the chimpanzee. Out of our 6 billion people we have a small pool of highly educated and inquisitive people like Neil, Hawking and so on.

Furthermore, the more I read into the subject of INTELLIGENT alien life, the more I think it's fairly rare in our universe. There is alien life out there for sure, if life can arise near volcanic plumes then life is out there perhaps in the probable oceans of Europa.

A reading of our past and development as a species show how depended we were on some factors beyond the probable. We have had extinction events but not catastrophic enough to kill all life. We have a satellite that induces currents and what I believe contributed to life occurring. I recommend reading the Short History of Everything to further explore this topic.

Grenade throwing fail by Chinese Army rookie

If you look at 0:42 there seems to be shrapnel damage to the concrete wall.
So despite the abnormal shape, iii'm guessin' those weren't just for practice.. =/

That's not a "grenade". That's a "practice grenade" I doubt if either of them would have been seriously injured even if they hadn't moved, it's just a little bang and some smoke.

Looks like a real grenade to me.
They dont go off with giant plumes of fire, just a small puff of smoke and death.

I've thrown hand grenades so I know what they, "go off like". Look at it at 0:07 does that look like a normal hand grenade to you? 'Cause it looks like a training grenade to me.

Oh, you got me... I didn't watch that far. I guess the other shot of the grenade was file footage or something.
