Gaga for Bowie

artician says...

I have never seen a clip of Gaga's shit that didn't feature the most blatant, stomach-turning use of product-placement. I've only seen two, and that was enough. I cannot believe it.

Why Britain Sucks At Product Placement

RedSky says...

What irritates me the most is product placement on news sites.

With everyone using AdBlock I can imagine they're struggling for revenue, but it's frustrating when you see say tech sites previously with good editorial commentary running "XX releases new product" every second post which all read like a press release. Or "xmas gift ideas" articles that are pretty much glossy ad inserts.

VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Front Page (Sift Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

@notarobot: Valid point about the playlist link. I'm going to work on moving it on the single video page and also adding it to the front page.

Regarding short/long/nsfw, I just quickly threw that onto the front page today after someone ^up there pointed out they were missing. I first had it next to the "comments" link, but thought everyone would prefer them below the thumbnail because they are hard to spot in the other area and serve to clutter it up more.

To me the uniform space between thumbnails is a non-issue, and in fact something I still don't even recognize casually now that you've pointed it out.

What do the rest of you guys think? Does the placement of long/short/nsfw below the thumbnails on the front page bother you and prefer that they'd be right of the thumbnail next to the "comments" link? Or are you happy with it where it is?

The other reason I put it below the thumbnail is that when you expand the video you can see that info in the meta data column with the length, channels, and tags.

Another Truck Hits That Massachusetts Bridge

newtboy says...

I take exception with the description. It CLAIMS there are 'warning lights', but I don't see any at all. it CLAIMS there are warning signs, but all I see is the single small 'caution' sign with terrible placement so it blends in with the speed limit sign and the junction boxes on the telephone pole. The only noticeable sign does not indicate any low clearance, it warns of grooved pavement ahead. It would be simple for them to put up the type of system where small weighted red balls hang from above WELL BEFORE THE BRIDGE that will hit any oversized truck AND trigger flashing warning lights on the bridge itself. Instead, they put up easily missed 'warning' signs, and a camera to catch the action they know is coming. I've been seeing footage of this bridge for years, there's absolutely no excuse for them not fixing the problem, yet they have not fixed it. If I were a truck driver caught out by this bridge, I would definitely sue the city for knowingly not fixing a known issue, and knowingly not even putting up visible warnings.

Ill leave this here instead of cluttering the thread, but just wanted to say EXCELLENT fix One of my favorites so far for multiple reasons. Size and placement is right on. Also channels is a nice splash of color. Appeals to my eyes and improvement not only usability but visually more appealing imo.

I've added tags and channels back in.

I've had trouble trying to find a way to reinsert them in a subtle way that won't clutter the place up but will still be easily accessible.

After contemplating lots of options what I came up with was just putting them below the byline but minimally, with smaller text and semi-transparent until you hover over the video's meta info box.

Thoughts on my solution and other possible, possibly better solutions requested.

VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Video Page (Sift Talk Post)

Agreed that the channels need to be present.

Also, the placement of the vote total with the upvote and downvote arrows are placed so far at the bottom of the page (at least on Firefox) I either need to scroll down to access it to vote or I have to be very accurate with my cursor.

Adjusting that up off the "bottom" of the page (without having to scroll) would be nice to have access to. Otherwise, I could imagine videos not getting voted for at all. Which would not be good needless to say.

buzzfeed women drinking whiskey for he first time

aaronfr says...

But then Buzzfeed couldn't have done its "native advertising" of Jack Daniels and Canada Dry. Didn't even hit me until I clicked through to "Americans Eating Sushi" and, surprise, there's the ginger ale again. I know it's just entertainment, but do we really need product placement in Buzzfeed videos?

Obviously a bud light viral. Really. Let's meander the camera onto the chick with the nice tits as she carefully lays down the product placement. Just look at her hands as she lets that can go.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Student Debt

Porksandwich says...

I think universities fail pretty miserably at informing and preparing students for what their course of study will most likely entail once they graduate. And while it's great to say that education is worth it just for the learning portion of it, if you are taking out loans and your school is taking in that money...they should be putting you on your best foot forward in terms of job preparedness.

Besides the few friends I made during my university experience, I feel like it was a lot of wasted time and money because there have been at least three sizable job downturns in the field I studied since graduating.

And while I realize they can't guarantee you a job or that the jobs will be there, the numbers still say it's a growing field. They just kind of gloss over the fact that they are taking in about three times the number of people that the market can likely support, and continuing to do so each year. You MIGHT be the special one to have a lot of luck with the hunt, but even if you aren't....you still gotta pay back those loans. It's a no lose situation for the schools, because there is no expectations on placement....so they can keep taking in more and more students for programs that can't likely place half of them in their fields. That's assuming the economy doesn't barf all over itself every 5-8 years too.

Cellphone Video Show Officers Shoot and Kill Suspect

chicchorea says...

lucky760's reasoning is sound.

Anyone that has researched and/or trained on weapon on weapon defense, in this case knife vs. firearm knows the Tueller's Drill. It has been a standard for over thirty years. Basically,

The Tueller Drill is a self-defense training exercise to prepare against a short-range knife attack when armed only with a holstered handgun.
Sergeant Dennis Tueller, of the Salt Lake City, Utah Police Department wondered how quickly an attacker with a knife could cover 21 feet (6.4 m), so he timed volunteers as they raced to stab the target. He determined that it could be done in 1.5 seconds. These results were first published as an article in SWAT magazine in 1983 and in a police training video by the same title, "How Close is Too Close?"[1]
A defender with a gun has a dilemma. If he shoots too early, he risks being charged with murder. If he waits until the attacker is definitely within striking range so there is no question about motives, he risks injury and even death. The Tueller experiments quantified a "danger zone" where an attacker presented a clear threat.[2]
The Tueller Drill combines both parts of the original time trials by Tueller. There are several ways it can be conducted:[3]
The "attacker and shooter are positioned back-to-back. At the signal, the attacker sprints away from the shooter, and the shooter unholsters his gun and shoots at the target 21 feet (6.4 m) in front of him. The attacker stops as soon as the shot is fired. The shooter is successful only if his shot is good and if the runner did not cover 21 feet (6.4 m).
A more stressful arrangement is to have the attacker begin 21 feet (6.4 m) behind the shooter and run towards the shooter. The shooter is successful only if he was able take a good shot before he is tapped on the back by the attacker.
If the shooter is armed with only a training replica gun, a full-contact drill may be done with the attacker running towards the shooter. In this variation, the shooter should practice side-stepping the attacker while he is drawing the gun.
Mythbusters covered the drill in the 2012 episode "Duel Dilemmas". At 20 feet the gun wielder was able to shoot the charging knife attacker just as he reached the shooter. At shorter distances the knife wielder was always able to stab prior to being shot. (Wikipedia)

That a firearm, particularly a handgun, will instantly incapacitate an individual is not a working concept and is fallacious. Variables such as adrenaline and drugs are attributable. Shot placement is trumps. Anything but a CNS. central nervous system, shot is not efficacious in safely stopping the threat. Not an easy or sure target sans movement, stress, etc.

Law enforcement put their lives and safety in harm's way every day. They are not there to die needlessly. An individual with suicide by cop or a LEO's death in mind is a serious threat to be dealt with with prejudice.

By the way, research knife wounds vs. handgun wounds. There is much data, ER, medical examiner, law enforcement. The deadly seriousness of knife wounds are well documented.

Tasers...I would not want to risk my life behind one or anyone about whom I care.

Trippy - a GoPro duct taped to a tire - Wheeee!

ghark says...

Aye exactly; there's no need for the product name in every title of a video that is made using one, surely. I don't know the exact term for what this is, but it reeks of viral marketting/product placement, or whatever, and it's simply not necessary - these are just... videos. Anyway, thanks for listening

Sagemind said:

The Sift is not being used to sell GoPro any more than it's being used to sell iphones and other camera phones. Though I agree, people could stop using the camera name in the post titles, the camera used is irrelevant to the actual video.

Edit: Anyone want a vote their opinion on removing the GoPro Name from the title??
2nd Edit: the original post mentions Duct tape, but nothing about using a GoPro - could be any camera.
