Sam Harris - On Calling Out Religion, Death

Truckchase says...

Absence of proof should be a stimuli for critical thinking rather than one-liners.

In addition, I would urge all who remained convinced that there is reason for "faith" to self-evaluate their influences throughout life. I am confident you will find you've been slowly but surely led down this path of deceit since birth, and to question it is to put yourself in a truly uncomfortable place since if you are a critical thinker you may realize there is no reason to believe what you've been told all your life is true. I think the more pertinent debate here isn't proof vs. lack thereof, but more so the psych of why people feel the need to "believe" and what the ramifications of giving into those emotions are.

Unfortunately it seems to me that organized religion globally causes far more destruction (not just in violent terms, but that of progress) than it prevents or addresses.

The greatest movie cell phone PSA ever

The smallest whisper or crinkle of a wrapper can set me off! I once took a man's genitalia off just for slurping his soda too loud. I shoved is lopped off penis into his mouth and said my best one-liner to date: "Here's something to suck on, flyboy!"

The Imagination is strong with this one.

I'm pretty much the movie Nazi. I hate the movie-going audience, because I feel like they each think they're in their own living room. Years of frustration has made me an embittered curmudgeon, and I no longer have any patience for the public.

Bill Maher's final comment from Religulous (Spoiler)

I realize the videosift teritory is fairly areligious, but please read this comment with an open mind.
I dont know so much about the christian parts of that clips, but from the muslim bits he used, to me it seemed to show that he didn't have a proper understanding of the religion. This fact really struck me when he was making the leap of logic that just because a religion believes in the final day, that somehow its OK to pillage the earth (environmentally), according to the religion.
I haven't seem the whole movie, perhaps its better, but this clip was simply a series of picking and choosing one liners to prove a point, instead of an actual understanding of the overall picture.
The last thing that i found strange was his claim that moderates should free themselves of these chains because the entity of religion has been used for so much hate, killing, etc. I really think that's absurd. What if I worded the exact same thing, except put in a country.
'Moderate Americans should emancipate themselves from America because the USA has commited crimes such as starting wars, killing thousands, napalming thousands.... etc, all in the name of USA.'
You probably realize how absurd his reasoning is. Clearly Americans SHOULDN't emancipate themselves just because there are some people committing crimes in its name, so why is this train of logic appropriate for religions?

The discussion about the End of Days is just to illustrate how people hoping for the world to end have no reason to better the world.

"Faith [Religion] means making a virtue of not thinking. It's nothing to brag about. And those who preach faith and enable and elevate it, are our intellectual slave holders, keeping mankind in a bondage to fantasy and nonsense."

That is the heart of the entire film, that if people live their lives and make their decisions based on millennia old superstition and faerie tales they become a detriment to society and a danger to the future of all mankind.

Santas Disable Traffic Cameras

drattus says...

While I hate the NSA spy programs and the illegal wiretapping, this one strikes me as misdirected effort. Jerks running red lights kill people, traffic cameras probably aren't the best place to start the protest.

Besides there's a difference between public and private, invasive and not. I used to be more conflicted about the idea until I ran across a simple one liner I never could come up with a legitimate argument against, if you can I'd love to hear it. When you're in public people can see you.

We've got enough real invasions of privacy without getting sidetracked by the little stuff. Some of them worth sending people to prison over I'd think. This isn't one of them.

Longer version: Bush dodges shoe and his reaction

joedirt says...

It he spent one minute of his life learning anything about the culture he has spent seven years destroying he wouldn't have been smirking and making jokes. Isn't this pretty much the muslim equivalent of spitting in his face? And he's smirking the whole time coming up with his brilliant one-liner.

What a failure.
