NYC's Best Sicilian Slice, Explained

mxxcon says...

It's pizza juice.
And when it pools in those pepperoni cups it becomes a molten lava hot. You take one bite and that hot "olive oil" sears the roof of your mouth until it blisters and then you can't taste anything for the next 3 days because chunks of blistered skin are hanging from the roof of your mouth.

Fuck hot pizza juice!

Brand Name vs. Generic

Sycraft says...

The generic food thing is rather silly since often as not there is more than one brand of food and they taste different. At most one of those brands is being used as the store brand which means the rest will taste different. Sometimes it is totally different as well, the store may contract a major company to make it, but still have their own formula.

Basically store-brand food is just another brand and should be treated as such. It can be very tasty, I'm personally a big fan of Safeway's store brand olive oil, but acting like store brand food is the same as brand name is the same as acting like Coke and Pepsi taste the same. No, it's different stuff, buy the stuff you like the best.

I use 1/4 cup olive oil instead of 2 tbsp. vegetable oil, and I also use about 1/5 cheddar cheese, but otherwise that's pretty much the recipe I've been using for years. Makes good calzones too.

Exercise is NOT the Key to Weight Loss

newtboy says...

That's insane. That sounds like a pretty blatantly self serving (and ridiculous) statement for a vegetarian cook to say.
Good meat takes way more proper prep work, you don't just slap it on the grill. I usually marinate meat for hours-days before grilling it, or coat it with dry rub and let it sit for an hour+.
Just read my above post for a totally simple and easy recipe for green beans that works for just about any vegetable you might cook.
Another good one is just pan fry in butter, olive oil, or sesame oil then splash in some soy sauce at the end. Soy/ginger salad dressing can be substituted for soy sauce for more flavor.
For a third simple recipe, lightly pan fry in butter, then add brown sugar and peppers (white, black, cayenne) to candy them. YUM.

As one of my favourite chefs says on her NY vegetarian restaurant webpage:

Anyone can cook a hamburger, leave the vegetables to the professionals.

It's just easier to make meat taste good, but vegetables can be amazing. The rub is that it's just not as easy as throwing meat onto the BBQ.

You Suck at Cooking - Easiest Salad Dressing on Earth

AeroMechanical says...

Just the balsamic and olive oil is easier yet and considerably better in my opinion. The trick is to buy very good vinegar and oil. It's okay to get the expensive stuff because it lasts forever. I'm still on the same pint of balsamic vinegar I brought back from Italy almost five years ago.

You Suck at Cooking - Roasted Brussels Sprouts

newtboy jokingly says...

Terrible recipe. He sucks at cooking.
Far better is cut them in 1/2 and pan fry them in olive oil, butter, and fresh rosemary. Instead of 30 min of cooking, they're ready in under 5 and are great.

Difficult questions: Olive Oyl's dilemma

oohlalasassoon says...

Popeye
Olive
Brutus
Wimpy
Chris

Popeye's the sole reason these shenanigans even got started. Everyone else is a victim of their own weakness, exposed by Popeye's cavalier existence. Olive Oil is co-dependent and is #2 because she posed the question to the rest of them. They were just minding their own business until she came along (thanks to Popeye). Brutus, an opportunist, took advantage of Olive Oil for selfish, but natural reasons. However he nearly trades spaces with Popeye for #1 for inexplicably wanting to bone Olive. Wimpy's sort of a puss, let's be real. Inaction is the same as action, but at least he didn't get all Brutus with Olive, and only offer conditional help in the form of really garbage sex. Chris, although being named Chris (bad outside this context), beat up Popeye, who's the worst on this list, so Chris is #5 in this scenario.

Michael Greger, MD - The Cure for Heart Disease

curiousity says...

My dad just had to have a stent put in and have medication. He's an active person who hates taking medication. He started following a diet by Esselstyn which is essentially plants-based and very low fat (i.e. no added oils, etc) with the goal of getting off his medication. I watched a video by Esselstyn and it was interesting. (I'll have to watch this one later as I need to leave for work.) He did not require any of his study group to exercise. One point he brought up that I hadn't heard before was about how olive oil is actual bad for you. While it does create a better ratio of cholesterol, it still increases it. He talked about two sequential studies (monkey and then rat) where each group were given either monounsaturated oil (olive oil) or saturated oil. At the end when the autopsies were done, both had very similar build of of plaque, etc in their arteries. It's made me decide to try to follow in my dad's footsteps when it comes to diet.

I also have a friend who is very happy and almost constant advocate of the paleo diet. IMHO, I think anyone will feel better if they steer away from processed foods, eat a variety, get plenty of fiber, etc.

Quick 'n' Easy Home made MAYO

oritteropo says...

It's not called ground nut oil here either... we'd call it peanut oil. Maybe it's a UK thing?

I expect any mild tasting oil would work, but I don't think you'd want something strongly flavoured like extra virgin olive oil. I'd probably use grape seed oil, because I have that and not peanut.

My recipe says that if it splits, pour the mix out, add another egg yolk, and slowly add the split mixture back in like you added the oil the first time around.

Did I mention anything about an accent?
No, no I didn't.
I just can't understand him when he names the type of oil he uses - Which makes sense because I've never before heard of "Ground nut oil"

Recipe #1
Dystopianfuturetoday:
EGGDILLA

-2 Corn Tortillas (get good tortillas from a mexican market)

-1 Egg

-Oil (I used olive oil, but veggie or canola should work fine)

-Pepper Jack Cheese (Use other types of cheese if you like)

-Cajun Seasoning - I used “Slap Ya Mama” seasoning - which is a mix of salt, red pepper, white pepper and garlic. Improvise if you need to.

-Mayo - You can leave this out if you are trying to be healthy

-Gochugang Sauce - This is a mix of pepper paste, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, soy sauce and honey. Mix to taste, put it in a squeeze bottle in the fridge and it will taste delicious on just about anything. Formal recipe here: http://www.luluz.net/articles/eat/gochujang-sauce-for-bibimbap/
