Dogs after anesthesia

newtboy says...

They tell me I was screaming just like the pug at :50 when I woke up after the last time my dentist gave me nitrous….I have no memory of that at all, but he doesn’t offer it to me anymore.

F-35 US Marines Jet Fighter escorting Air Force One and land

Finally, only 60 years after the Harrier debuted we have another v-tol fighter.

It’s so weird to see v-tol. It looks *almost fake seeing a plane do that.

*(“almost” because I watched it minimized on an iPad…I want my vote back)

Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Documentary

spawnflagger says...

This makes me want to go back and play HL2 Episodes 1 & 2. I know I bought them, but don't remember ever finishing them. HL2 was so technically impressive. Portal 2 was also great, especially the co-op multiplayer. Alyx is a good VR title- it's close to a "killer app" for VR, but not quite there. 1 of the few VR titles compelling enough to keep headset on for more than 1 hour.

Not half-life related, but "old but cool" PC tech from that era: I had a DVD/MPEG2 decoder card that did VGA passthrough, and would replace black pixels with the movie content - so I could watch the Matrix in the background of playing Quake or other FPS (this was a dual PIII-450Mhz). I later installed an ATSC tuner card - one of the first channels that broadcast in HD was Fox, and one of my favorite shows, 24, started to broadcast in HD - and the early days all the makeup artists took advantage of low-res, so as soon as the show went to HD, you could see how fake all the blood, makeup, and other effects were. Hollywood ramped up quickly once the first HDTVs started shipping.
That computer also ran BeOS quite well.

Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Documentary

Since HL2 will be/is 20 yrs. old and we're all getting nostalgia! Let's talk about those days!

IIRC during the first week of its release, I bought its retail from a local Best Buy with a $10/10% sale or something back then. According to my detailed https://zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/about/toys.html history, I recently upgraded my Windows gaming PC with these parts: "... ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card, an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.2GHz 512KB Socket 754 single core CPU, ASUS K8V SE Deluxe (VIA K8T800 Socket 754 ATX; VIA VT8237 South Bridge; Revision 2; onboard sound disabled; onboard NIC not used/connected (using 3COM NIC for network) and can't be disabled or else Promise Raid won't be activate), a 3 fan HDD Peeze cooler, 1 GB of PC3200 Kingston RAM (CAS 3), and Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS." I think I also got Windows XP OS too.

Anyways, I remember playing this game over my long Thanksgiving weekend. It was amazing! Very smooth, pretty, and fun! I don't remember how long it took me to finish it. It was a great sequel. Of course years later, episodes 1 and 2 (The Orange Box -- will talk about that in three years). I don't have and want a VR to play Alyx.

What about the rest of you? Also, remember PlanetHalfLife.com web site? RIP, & GameSpy's web sites.

Formula Offroad Iceland Top 10 Best In Show Runs

newtboy says...

I have a good story for that comment.
My wife and I went to Iceland (I went to a formula offroad event while there!) a while back, and one B&B host told us that for years they sent videos of Formula Offroad to SkyTV (the European version of ESPN) with no response. Eventually they got through to someone to ask why, and were told “SkyTV doesn’t broadcast remote control cars”….yes, for over a decade they assumed no human would drive like that and it must be RC cars! When they proved it was real full size cars with real live drivers, it was immediately put on air and has been popular ever since.
Good stuff.

Side note…these events are one main way Iceland funds most of its rescue teams that save stupid tourists that go off trail and get lost.

Honest Trailers | The Wizard of Oz

BSR says...

I remember watching The Wizard Of Oz as a child. As the show started on TV, my mother was applying Vicks VapoRub on my chest because I had a cold. The scent of Vicks VapoRub always reminds me of The Wizard Of Oz to this day.

Is this why Trump ran in 2016?

newtboy says...

So his point is the entire maga movement is nothing more than sour grapes and a vendetta against half the country over a light roasting at a comedy event!?!
What a thin skinned spoiled rotten little baby man…OH MY FUCKING GOD!

And Elon thinks this makes sense and is reasonable.

AGAIN!

“My faith votes” leader and pro-Trump “evangelical” pastor Jason C. Yates just got caught red-handed with a hard-drive full of child porn, AGAIN…hundreds of photos and videos of children as young as 5 year olds in sexual situations, because you are in a child rape cult.
BEFORE YOU TRY TO DENY ANYTHING, HE ADMITS THEY ARE HIS.
It begs the question, why is he only charged with 8 when there are hundreds of photos, and he’s already a convicted sex crime convict?

YES, YOU READ THAT CORRECT, HE HAD BEEN CONVICTED FOR CHILD PORN 10 YEARS BEFORE AND STILL LED THE CHRISTIAN PRO TRUMP ORGANIZATION RIGHT UP UNTIL HIS LATEST CHARGES.

These are your best, your moral leadership.
Why can’t you notice how often and how many self righteous REPUBLICANS are CONVICTED of hypocritically committing the worst, most disgusting and immoral crimes imaginable over and over and over and over and over and over and over…and how few Democrats?
Or is it you don’t care, you only use pedophilia as a weapon against your enemies but in fact don’t care one whit about raping 5 year old girls, you just need a weapon against your enemies? It’s one or the other.

Crappy.
Mine are infinitely better. As a kid, an ant bite (or any sting) would make my entire arm swell until it looked like it might pop. Now I keep bees and barely notice stings. I just quit reacting at some point.
I took shots daily for years (early 80s) to get over food and pollen allergies only to move where there’s different pollen, but it’s still better.

Yep, being old sucks…but I’ve found that for the most part it’s a choice, one easily made by ignoring your best options. I have a bad back, and had a paralyzed dog for 7 years. Together they gave me plenty of excuses to stay on the couch far too much. I honestly feel like I’ve reversed 25 years of aging with just some exercise (consistent long dog walking) and eating just slightly better for 18 months. Since I’m bald, I don’t even have gray hair!

I’m lucky…I just get aches and cramps. Much easier to deal with, but pretty much a constant these days.

I used to hate turn based when I was younger. Now that I am an old slow busy fart, I love them. I can't do these quick reflex and grinding games like I used to. Yeah, computer gaming can be expensive and a lot of work! I don't like the controllers for consoles due to my disabilities. I prefer huge clicky keyboards and mouses that doesn't require me to hold. With my iPhone, I have to use a 360 degrees finger ring holder to hold on my left hand and then my one finger/antenna to input! Also, my hands gets achy and tired from holding too long!

newtboy said:

I haven’t enjoyed a turn based game since Herzog Zwei on Sega Genesis (and I’m not even certain it was one, it’s been so long).
I did the gaming pc thing for a decade, but realized that it will ALWAYS need an upgrade to play the newest games well, and I don’t have infinite money to keep up. Consoles last years to a decade with no upgrades needed or possible, so it always plays the new games just fine…and there’s GameFly so I can play through every game I want to for cheaper than buying 5 games a year.

I still have no cell phone…it’s a badge of honor that I never have.

I haven't owned a console since my Atari 2600! I still like computers because I want to do more than gaming! I can even get addons, hacks, etc. for computer games. I don't play much games these days though. I even play more games (Duolingo, Propel, Lengendary (just started last night!), etc.) in my iPhone than my PC these days! They are short and turn based.

I gave up on that decades ago, I play consoles now and never looked back.
