Least Attractive Hottie - Taylor Tomlinson

A couple of months in the gym and a reasonably strict diet and she'd probably be a solid 8. Amazing what low body-fat and a bit of muscle tone can do to just about anyone.

Unreal Engine's Human CGI is So Real it's Unreal

ravioli says...

What this company (snapperstech.com) did is put together an upgraded control "rig" to manipulate facial expressions, taking into account muscle limits and interactions, skin elasticity, etc.

A little more info in the video's YT desc :
-Adaptive rig: which allows combining any number of expressions using optimized list of blendshapes.
-Real facial muscles constraints: the advanced rig logic simulates real facial muscles constraints.
-Advanced skin shader (for Maya and Unreal): holds up to 16 wrinkles maps and 16 dynamic diffuse maps with micro details and pores stretching.
-Easy to manipulate using facial controllers and/or GUI.
-Compatible with all game engines and animation packages.
-Smooth transition between all the expressions.
-Adjustment layer: freeform manipulation of multiple regions of the face to create unlimited variations of the same expression.

The real-time rendering part is achieved by the Unreal engine itself. The final rendering performance still relies mainly on the hardware used.

ChaosEngine said:

Yeah, the real-time aspect of it is insanely good, although I'd still like to know how much of the rendering budget it takes up, i.e. is this usable in a game or just a research project at the moment?

What do you mean by "only one modifier is being applied"? Which is my other criticism of the video; a voiceover explaining the tech would have been more interesting than the music.

I don't believe that "multiple modifiers" would make this look better, for the simple reason that if you're demoing a technology like this, you end with ALL the bells and whistles to make it look as good as possible.

Unreal Engine's Human CGI is So Real it's Unreal

SeesThruYou says...

In motion, there's subtle clues that tell you it's not quite human, BUT, if you were to manipulate it into an expression and take a screenshot... I don't think I'd be able to tell it wasn't real. It's the muscle range, the way the wrinkles appear, the way the blood coloration changes in response to the tightness of the skin, the pores, the subsurface scattering, the facial hairs, etc... incredibly convincing on a whole new level, even extremely close up, which is where the illusion normally breaks down. Very very impressive.

Man arrested for using $2 bills at Best Buy

All the time.
Local pigs are often in the pocket of big biz and work as their muscle.

Forget the $2 bill, since when does Best Buy utilize the local police in collecting accounts receivable?

Denmark has a lesson for us all

transmorpher says...

Synthol injections. It hardens in-between the muscle fibers to separate them and make your arms look bigger. It's dangerous, and does not increase strength or muscle tissue size.

It's basically breast implants for men. So yes, just like you said, they don't seem real because they aren't

Mordhaus said:

ok, WTF is wrong with that dude's arms? They don't seem real.

Beheaded, Gutted Fish Still Puts up a Fight

there looks to be grains of salt on the chopping board. High concentration of Sodium on the muscle fibres can cause the cells to depolarise chaotically like a muscle cramp. Depolarisation releases calcium ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum causing the muscle fibres to contract and there is enough energy in the cell(ATP) to release the contraction and allow further contractions as with the video.Eventually it will stop working as the ATP is exhausted .

Would You Ride This?

dannym3141 says...

I've actually been on one of these in Thailand at Hanuman World, near Phuket.

I was the only person riding it that day, and the staff were looking at me and asking if I was ready to use it with a touch of incredulity - as though not many people did, or people had backed out when they saw it.

It was as you'd expect, fast, extreme and terrifying/terrific, and about 1/3rd of the way down it i realised i was completely out of breath. The corners and drops and stuff were so extreme and at such high speed I was having to tense every muscle and hold my breath - it was exhausting just to sit on it. I had to take very deep very determined breaths to recover. I don't think i'd have second thoughts about skydiving or bungee jumping after riding that thing. It was insane, and i'd love to do it again. However rough it looks on the video, it feels about 10x more violent when you're on one.

Great White Shark Cage Breach Accident

AeroMechanical says...

So, I'm thinking the moral of the story is that shark cages need to be tested to a higher standard. They're designed to withstand the impact of a shark, but not a shark using it's several thousand pounds of muscles to pry the bars apart, though that's probably impossible to achieve and still have a useable shark cage.

Big animals are strong.

Fencing in slow motion

noims says...

Not far off, but it's all ok. My best friend - his dad - has gone to have a little chat with him. I'm sure it's all sorted by now.

As for the response speed (yes, I was tempted to wait a year or so before posting this), I do remember one night after doing well in a competition I kept being woken up by my right arm doing a parry-riposte. My muscles were acting completely independant of my conscious brain. It was one of the weirdest feelings I've ever had.

A student went over to the dark side and you swore you'd never teach people to kill again?

But now you have to come out of retirement to hunt down your former student because you're "the only one who knows him"?

I'm always impressed by the sheer response speed of fencers.

Too much steroids.

Basically testosterone is responsible for "man" growth, strong chins, muscles, all that shit. You take 100x the puberty dose of testosterone for a decade and you look like that. It also pushed his vocal chords too far, which is why he sounds like that.

Debunking Hydration/Dehydration - Adam Ruins Everything

harlequinn says...

No, you've pointed out what you believe were adverse outcomes from slight dehydration. These are anecdotes. You didn't measure your level of dehydration, nor did you control for all the other factors that could have caused your issues.

If it was dehydration causing you to have muscle cramps and loss of consciousness then you probably didn't have "slight dehydration", you most likely had severe dehydration. And as someone has already pointed out, the evidence for muscle cramps caused by dehydration is slim (but that doesn't mean it's not true for you).

Studies don't take into account outliers. They look at large groups of people to generate explanations for human physiological conditions. You might be a one in a billion person and react differently to dehydration than almost everyone else.

Khufu said:

no adverse outcomes? I've pointed out several adverse outcomes of very slight dehydration. In the video they use the example of sports and say hydration isn't important. So ya, if he's referring to clinical dehydration, he's basically side-stepping the fact that that's not what anyone is worried about when hydrating for sport, it's more about the intense cramping and loss of consciousness that we don't need scientific studies to confirm. Just like I don't need a scientific study to tell me to eat when I'm hungry.
