Seems like something you might catch me sifting The Monkees tv show was my absolute jam as a kid. https://videosift.com/video/The-Monkees-Im-A-Believer
I do however love the German version they use in the JoJo trailer. The David Bowie "Heroes" song also seems amazing in German. https://youtu.be/nb6Gbi1MpoE

Damnit Mike. Gotta screw up everything Monkees, don't you. Give the boys a break. Just because you're ashamed of and angry about your professional start is no excuse for trying to hide it from the world.

Nesmith was my favorite, but his apparent hatred for and control of all things Monkees has really gotten old.

This clip from Spinal Tap is apropos, because it's a lampoon of the Monkees video, but they were also lampooning Maiden, Sabbath, Priest, Saxon, Randy Rhoads, Ian Gillan, etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-BYzaDwNoE

This is an interesting interview with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, because it addresses a rumor that they had walked out of Spinal Tap because they believed the band was making fun of them (which was untrue): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1022475/He-aint-heavy-hes-captain----Iron-Maiden-rocker.html

It's important to note that the members of Spinal Tap were all musicians and played their own music from the get go, whereas the Monkees only recorded their vocals and had other people play the instruments. Of course, in time the Monkees learned to play, even if there was so much wasted recording time they had to bring in other musicians to fill in. They eventually improved enough to play live shows with their own instrument play.

I gotta do my best to defend the Monkees, Iron Maiden, and Spinal Tap, because they ARE all great acts and entertainers. I say ARE because, as of 2016, The Monkees, Iron Maiden, AND Spinal Tap are all touring to this day. Not together, of course. That would be too awesome.

Yeah, when I wrote that I did think it was slightly unfair to the Monkees, but they were just the earliest example I could think of.

My point still stands that "pop" music has always been about image and manipulation over music.

I guess that is maybe the difference between 50 years ago and today. Yes The Monkees were not a band that came together organically...the members were chosen just as they would cast members of a TV show. BUT they were all musicians and singers and they were embarrassed that people thought they were fake and could not even play their instruments. While true they did not play on the first couple of albums (not because they weren't capable but because the studio didn't want them to) they DID play at their live performances and they fought the studio that hired them so that they eventually could also play on their albums.

It was important to them that the fans knew when they came to see a LIVE show that they would actually see and hear them singing and performing the songs live.

That doesn't seem to be of concern to today's pop stars.

Whole thing gets a giant "meh" from me. Pop music is fake? Wow, we only found that out 50 years ago with the Monkees.

If you want real music, there's plenty out there, it's just not in the charts.

I still don't see why people have to hate on Nickelback. Record companies have been generating hyped out bands and singers ever since someone invented record companies. For every Beatles and Elvis Presley, there are a couple hundred Monkees and Nickelback.

By and large, people are sheep. They move with the herd. What is Facebook and Twitter other than versions of this cult of popularity? They are both shit "apps", but they make money and are popular.

I bet over half the people who like "indie" music download it illegally instead of supporting their favourite bands. The fact most people support bands like Nickleback and not indies is almost funny in it's irony.
