Bill Maher and Colbert - Police Culture has to change

Babymech says...

To be honest I didn't read all of your reply because you said you were done, so I don't think you'll respond further I'll just address the tail-end - the noun-switching thing is really stupid.

If I say our police aren't performing to the standards we require, you don't help the dialogue by switching out the word police for 'blacks', 'jews', or 'hydrogen atoms'. For one, a police force is something we choose to have; we have created the police force for specific reasons. These specific reasons come with minimum requirements, which we need to keep track of to make sure we didn't make the wrong choice. Secondly, we have responsibility for our police force, to make sure they have the training and support to continue to serve their original goals, because nobody gets into police work with the dream of being on the wrong end of a viral video about shooting innocents.

You can't switch out the word police for 'blacks' or 'hydrogen atoms' because that's idiotic. You can switch out the word police for 'nurses,' 'fire fighters,' etc, because those are comparable groups, that we need to monitor, support, and hold accountable.

Nothing of what I say paints every police officer as equally in the wrong. That's like saying it's wrong to sound the alert for occasional nuclear meltdowns, because that ignores all the times we don't have meltdowns. If our reactor works fine 6 days of the week, but has a critical failure once a week, that's a problem, and needs to be addressed, even though the other 6 days are fine.

Lawdeedaw said:

Also, a short note here...and then I am done. I find that any statement I make should be able to switch around nouns and if it sounds horrible with another noun in its place, you probably don't a statement worth shit.

For example, "Blacks are thugs." Replace that with, "Police are thugs." The statement itself is stupid, regardless of who it is applied too. Your statement about seeing what the police really do...like saying we see what blacks really do...is worthless....mostly because it claims them all into one group of equal do-evil.

Oh. I see your confusion.

This is a regular bit on Nikki's show.

They hire real porn actors. The actors have earbuds. In the next room, watching on a monitor, are Nikki and Kristen.

Nikki and Kristen tell the actors what to say.

Some of the humor comes when the porn stars can't repeat or don't understand what they hear in their earbuds.

It's real porn stars doing what they do best -- and showing some real acting chops, too. They really sell those lines!

I wonder if I should put this explanation in the description of the video. You're a smart dude, and it wasn't clear to you....

Talked myself into it. I'm copying this to the vid description.

Mordhaus said:

Yeah, I have seen them before, but I mean it's not like comedy central is going to release the porn vid. I wonder if they paid them to actually do the full scene and just used what they wanted for the skit, or if they made a deal with the video maker to just redub the audio later and release it as a regular video.

Dear Trump Supporters

MilkmanDan says...

I think a lot like you do -- big government is a problem. But, while the GOP loudly and constantly *declares* that it is the party opposed to big government, to me it seems pretty clear that that is no longer even remotely true (if it ever was).

Is Clinton even more in bed with all of that than Trump? Probably, yeah. But this isn't an issue that revolves around Republican vs Democrat lines. It absolutely does revolve around corporations.

Yay for Capitalism and everything, but if Capitalism is the ultimate motivator, it stands to reason that these giant corporations *must* be getting a return on their investment when they funnel huge sums of money into politics. Otherwise, as Capitalist enterprises, they wouldn't be doing it.

So while I tend to agree that big government tends to be worse than small government for quite a few reasons (harder to monitor for corruption, less efficient, etc.), I think that big corporations and big government represent a feedback loop that feed off of each other. Thinking that the problem lies in one but not the other is doing yourself a disservice.

The problem is big government. Not corporations or the 1%. It politicians lining their pockets and the expense of Americans.

If Meat Eaters Acted Like Vegans

LOL! Robin Thicke sees so many blurred lines, he needs a new prescription set of glasses.

Yikes, I suspect there will be many vegans cleaning spat out coconut juice off their monitors after seeing that monkey video.

Doom WASN'T 3D! - Digressing and Sidequesting

vil says...

Oh come on. Fairly informative and correct for the most part except for the title and main argument. Still, it is about Doom and binary partitions, so thats all OK.

Anything on a flat monitor is "just faking" 3D.

Yes, Doom levels could still be designed in plan view, but the in-game display of the floors, walls and ceilings is a very rudimentary, but definitely 3D, experience. Displayed objects have an obvious X, Y and Z coordinate. The Z coordinate was not used for aim (people had not got used to using a mouse for aim at that point) but it was used for display and movement.

Also forgot to complain about flat sprite monsters.

No Doom was not "computed like any other 2D game", or rather it partly was, but then on top of that it was displayed in 3D, which was a big deal back then. Yes, fake 3D, on a monitor, but definitely 3D.

Quake ran in plain VGA so the argument about 3D accelerators falls rather flat :-)

Computer Nightmares, China USB hub kills PC by design

chaos4u says...

All you mac people are so snowed or blind or just desperately trying to justify your money being wasted on a inferior product.

any thing can be done faster on a proper pc (proper meaning it uses the latest processor memory ssd and graphics card)

but the trouble comes from people when they get on pc they get cheap and expect to do their video editing in virtual dub (not knocking vdub by the way)

or try and find some other video tool they can use for free . they wont buy a proper video editing software package nor will they buy proper software tools for their jobs . they try and use free alternatives or try and pirate the software.

but when they use mac they by the video editing software and the tools they need .

it is such bs, macs are weaker hardware weaker operating system and a weaker overall tool . but since people have invested so much money into them they unjustly justify there purchases by derailing the pc as a lesser platform.

when it is not true.

pcs, can have dedicated storage that outperforms and also stores more than any mac can dream of .

pcs can be all self contained no need for plethora of external drives hanging form 4 may be 3 or is it 2? soon to become one port hanging off your mac in a needless chain of wires.

pcs can have higher resolution and better monitors better user input, better configuration options, and backwards and forward compatibility with previous and next gen software.

but no, mac users over shadow this with the base argument that their $1500 mac is some how better than the $300 desktop they love comparing to .

but when it becomes price point vs hardware mac users have no ground to stand on as they are using , even in their newest machines 3+ year old hard ware and even on a refresh they are already 1 year behind in technology.

mac is nothing more than a placebo for those who failed at using windows computers .

they constantly compare a custom 1500 dollar computer with a locked in user experience to a 300 dollar walmart special with a completely open user experience and lament the windows based product as inferior.

when in actuality it is the mac that is the inferior product.

did you know that your $2000++ mac has a 5400 rpm hardrive in it configured to work with 128gb ssd in such a way that if either of the two fail your entire data set is trashed?

yeah ... thats a well built product .

Why Electronic Voting is a BAD Idea

Spacedog79 says...

I stood as a candidate in the 2015 UK General Election and have to say seeing the process from the inside was quite impressive. We got to monitor the count and have teams making our own tallies of votes as the paper ballots were being counted by looking over the counter's shoulders. We could then predict how each candidate was doing from our sample and verify that the final result fell within our predictions. In all I came away very satisfied that the final tally was indeed a true reflection of the voter's intention.

A good tip if you want to voice your frustrations at the candidates: Just write it down on your ballot paper. It will likely spoil your ballot, but everything you write will be read carefully by the returning officer and all of the candidates to see if everyone agrees it constitutes a valid vote. If you clearly voted for a candidate and didn't write anything that could be personally identifiable it may still be counted as valid anyway.

I didn't win by the way, but did pretty well.

I'd watch so much more of this show if I didn't have to worry about that guys stupid hair highlight burning an after-image onto one of my monitors.

Project Blue Beam Whale Hologram in School Gymnasium

RFlagg says...

All the kids were watching to the left of where the action was happening, enough so to throw me off completely from the illusion, though some do follow it to the center as it goes on. If this isn't added in post, I'd guess this is using something akin to the Dubai video above, and like the video projections on buildings. They map the space, then when the audience is there, project the image live to a monitor, which is what the kids were watching to the left.

Basically it is an improved version of the goal line and projection seen on American Football games. That technology has come a long way with far more information being displayed on the field of play.

This would be a natural progression the technology and I'm surprised we don't see ads and the like on the field while watching a game. While American Football is filled to the brim with ad space, one of the problems American TV has with the "beautiful game", soccer here and a few places, football to most of the world, is the lack of ad time. I wouldn't be surprised to see mini ads playing around the action. Joe the Cameraman just keeps the action to the left half of the screen, and the right half has an ad on the field... perhaps starting off subtle, could be tied to the video monitors on the sideline of the fields that are already showing ads. Just amp that up... not a future one really wants to see, but I'd guess it is coming as more people ad skip.

Project Blue Beam Whale Hologram in School Gymnasium

FlowersInHisHair says...

Yeah, no, a CG whale comped into a shot of a non-responding audience isn't a hologram. The video linked in Gratefulmom's comment is just AR, not a hologram - they're looking at themselves in a video monitor that's got CG animals overlaid on the feed. And the Vancouver Expo video is probably an example of the Pepper's ghost illusion, like the recent "hologram" of 2Pac, rather than actually holographic.

And good call on the "Project Blue Beam" bullshit.

How Dad Helps His Child Experience Downhill Mountain Biking

Payback says...

She's probably smiling too hard to even SEE the screen...

Also, that's not a CRT, where an electron gun is constantly firing radiation at your face. It's an LED or LCD flatscreen. If you think THOSE do damage, then I respectfully submit you stop reading this and print it out because your monitor uses the same tech.

I only let my kids watch 1 hour of documentary TV per week, but even I can see that the bonding between that father and his daughter far outweighs any damage that might come from looking at a screen.

Idiocracy explains Trump voters

cosmovitelli says...

Right wingers have a lower IQ and want a simplified world. They get frustrated when the simpleton they elected, surrounded by Nixons CIA team (including the simpleton's daddy) treat them like the fools they are.
Then they make an even dumber decision. Eventually they will elect a Hitler or such. If that doesn't make them idiots I don't know what would.

As an entertaining sidenote, when Bush lost to Obama, right wing voters (those that were being monitored and expresseed political preference) had a DROP IN TESTOSTERONE.
For them politics is an emotional, tribal event like a pack of apes fighting over power. Idiot is too kind.

harlequinn said:

It's always nice to label those that don't share the same view as you as idiots.

Teens React To Windows 95

Khufu says...

Windows 95 looks and functions very much like windows today. And modern PC towers all have power buttons on both the Tower and the monitor. And finally, no one that had a clue ever used AOL.

Also navigating a PC in DOS is not done through 'code' and is still to this day how I navigate in Linux.

Nothing shocking here. I hope these kids are playing it up... for their sake.

How to tell if you believe in Bullsh*t

hatsix says...

We have high school students sending cameras into space. Testing the air at 30k would cost < $500/balloon. If all of the chemtrail theorists put in $100, they could EASILY afford to acquire the 'proof' they needed.
1) Decide what chemicals you want to test for
2) Select a way to test for those chemicals in the air. (active vs passive?)
3) When "Chemtrail" spotted, send up 50+ Weather Balloons in vicinity w/ chemical tester across range... 1 per half mile = 25 mile spread. (it takes 30 mins to climb to 30k feet)
4) Retrieve devices.
5) If no chemicals were found, either:
A) Dispersal of the chemical via chemtrail is terribly inefficient, absolutely no reason to worry
B) No chemicals were found

OR... and here is the brilliant part. Monitor chemicals on the ground. If they are in high enough concentration to have an effect on the human body, they'll be high enough to detect on the ground.

Testing that contrails are nothing but H20 would require a high-altitude drone or just charter a flight. It isn't that difficult to test, but the chemtrails theorists wouldn't trust a non-chemtrails theorist (otherwise they'd be over it for now).

Jinx said:

To be fair I can't test the hypothesis that contrails are H2O either.

And then for headaches = wifi etc I think some people don't understand why their experience isn't sufficient evidence, or rather what constitutes an experiment.
