Green Day Fan Gets to Play Guitar at Their Concert

ChaosEngine says...

>> ^blingaway:

No room for artist interpretation?
The thing with down-picking is it limits the speed at which one can play and it's very fatiguing in the long run. It's easier for a beginner to down-pick, and it looks cool, but it's a bad habit to cultivate if one wants to develop real technical proficiency.

Don't get me wrong, good alternate picking is important, but you seem to think that people down-pick because it's easier than alternate picking. It's actually not, especially if you want to play a fast song. Down-picking is a valid technique that produces a distinctly different sound than alternate picking. It's especially common in metal and punk. Master of Puppets by Metallica is a really good example of this. Almost the entire rhythm section of the song is down picked. Try playing along to it one day (or worse, a live version where it's even faster). I guarantee your picking forearm will ache by the time you get to the acoustic bit!

As for artist interpretation, if you don't like that kinda music, or even the down picking sound, that's fine, but the people doing it are not doing through lack of technical proficiency.
Full disclosure: I've been playing guitar for nearly 20 years. I don't claim to be a virtuoso, but I started out playing a lot of metal, so I know this stuff.

Rodrigo y Gabriela - Diablo Rojo

MilkmanDan says...

I discovered Rodrigo y Gabriela quite by accident. I got into Metal music while growing up originally due to Metallica, and they remain one of my favorite bands. My favorite Metallica song is Orion -- one of their long instrumental songs from back when Cliff Burton was still alive. Anyway, I also have a love for hearing covers and reinterpretations of songs that I like, so one day I was surfing the web and did a search for "orion cover", finding the Rodrigo y Gabriela version. I love it, and it got me into their whole catalog and original works like this one also.

Thanks for the sift!

Bill Maher supports SOPA, gets owned by guests

alcom says...

Maher is woefully misinformed on the gravity of SOPA's reach. I think his position goes well beyond simply playing the role of devil's advocate. He has (had?) a personal stake in the issue because of his own personal media ownership. He really shouldn't have brought it up without researching.

I watched this on Movie Central as part of my cable TV package. I tend not to buy/rent stuff when there's plenty to watch on cable anyway. But much like Metallica, his stance on piracy has likely alienated his own fans. I bet he hopes people quickly forget what he said here.

Need someone to dupe a video... (Sift Talk Post)

marinara says...

out of 4:25 minutes, there's 3 minutes in common, which is shown in little chunks on the Olbermann video.

apparently since Olbermann shows most of the new video, you think it should be deleted.
Personally I don't care about dupes.
Dupes only exist so that original submitters get the votes they deserve.

If I have an CD of Metallica, and they include a live version of the same song recorded earlier on the CD, do I have to scratch that track off the cd?

I'm don't appreciate people making choices for me, just because they think one sift is 99% as good as another sift.

Out of 4:25 in your video a total of two clips are directly out of this video--one of 1:46 duration and the second is 1:07.
KO's story is about 2008. Now--in 2012--this is again a story of interest. The commentary completely changes the video. Without any commentary the raw video is again relevant.

In Memoriam: Bands We Lost In 2011

shagen454 says...

I knew of

Double Dagger ... punky band from baltimore

LCD Soundsystem ... guy who runs DFA but LCD was bigger than his own label somehow.

REM ... duh

The White Stripes ... duh

Ludicra ... metal band from east bay that had a wicked female vocalist

The Stills ... fuck em

Ponytail ... some weirdo mathy band from baltimore that probably should not have had a vocalist at all.

and Sonic Youth. Had no idea Sonic Youth threw in the towel but knew that Thurston and Kim are getting divorced which is sad in and of itself.

All I know is that I did not see Lou Reed or Metallica on the list ... leaves me disappointed.

Guy Sounds Just Like Freddie Mercury

MilkmanDan says...

>> ^schlub:

I've heard this song SO many times that every nuance of it is imprinted perfectly in my memory. This guy does a pretty decent job but, he still misses the mark for sounding like Freddie. There are parts where he's really close but, mostly his voice is too "breathy". Very good attempt though!
Get your ears checked, MilkmanDan
>> ^MilkmanDan:
1) First, to my ear it is just so spot on that it seems almost unbelievable.
...

I figured that someone who was a bigger Queen fan would have a much better read on it than I did; if, say, someone was covering Metallica I think I'd be better able to pick up differences. On the other hand, I'm not much of a musician myself (dabble / have fun playing bass and guitar, but not well and I can't sing for s#it) so I'd still trust an expert's ear over my own.

Still, I stand by my assessment that to my ear he sounds very much like Freddie Mercury, to the point that I originally thought it might be lip-synching (although I'm now willing to accept he was singing it himself). I wouldn't have bet my life on it or anything, so I don't feel compelled to "get my ears checked" -- but I take no offense to your suggestion. Just glad to hear your comment as someone who is better able to compare to the studio recording than I am.

HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT-scene from the 1986 cult classic

Fade says...

Don't forget: Europe - The Final Countdown>> ^poolcleaner:

Let's see -- 1986 -- what did the metal gods deliver us in this year? Queensryche came out with a decent album, Candlemass released their very first album, Metallica's greatest work, Master of the Puppets came out; Iron Maiden had an alright album (not really in any of my top ten lists, but it's Maiden so it counts for something), Tony Iommi's solo album with Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple, Stryper's To Hell with the Devil (Haha, I kid), Dio's Intermission, Slayer's Reign in Blood, Fates Warning's Awaken the Guardian, Megadeth's Peace Sells But Who's Buying, and Judas Priest's Turbo.
It really isn't their fault that they're all so wasted, this year was a powder keg of pure metal madness!

The American flag waving the back is pretty cool. Also I remember ACDCs singer saying that after the wall fell one of the first things they asked for was ACDC...I'll be Metallica wasn't far behind on the request list.

EDIT: Sorry further research revealed ACDC was headlining this Monsters of Rock concert, along with Pantera, EST, The Black Crowes, and Metallica. Also there have been estimations of 1.6 million people, it was held at Tushino Airfield, Moscow.
