It confuses me that this movie isn't better-known. Having just looked at the other releases* the month it came out I can completely understand it not being a theatrical success, but it should have caught on via home rental. Nope! Always had a cult following, never anything beyond that.

*First week of June 1984: Star Trek III. Second week, Gremlins and Ghostbusters (yes, on the same day). Third week was dead, but the 4th saw not just Top Secret! but also The Karate Kid. The next week was Bachelor Party, Conan the Destroyer, and Cannonball Run II. I don't think Top Secret! stood a chance.

I came into the world with my legs forward:

The midwife wonder'd and the women cried
'O, Jesus bless us, he is born with teeth!'
And so I was; which plainly signified
That I should snarl and bite and play the dog.

Then, since the heavens have shaped my body so,
Let hell make crook'd my mind to answer it.

I will be deaf to pleading and excuses;
Nor tears nor prayers shall purchase out abuses:
Therefore use none:

Save your lectures for people who need them. Talk to my mother who is afraid to wear a mask because it might give her covid.

I know exactly how you feel.

The damage is being done to YOU.

Let him go. Let him do what he needs to do. Just don't let him manipulate you into what you are becoming.

Just know there are people on your side. I am one of them. You won't change him. He will only give you his fears and anger and frustrations and rob you of your happiness. Don't accept it.

Let him go knowing that he has to do what he needs to do until it comes back on him. He is in charge of his life and you are in charge of yours. It's not worth giving up your happiness or your time if he won't listen or just can't hear you to begin with. Let him fall. That's how he will learn.

Focus your attention on those that want and need you.

Share your happiness. Don't waste it. Not even a minute.

Sometimes to cross that bridge, there's no other choice but to behead the troll first. That's why so few bridges still have trolls today.

What do you mean there's no such thing as trolls?! Then how do you explain all the dead unicorns?

Learn?! You really think he's capable?

Remember, Moby Dick wasn't blameless. If he had just returned the leg he stole maybe he wouldn't have ended up so perforated, but his raison d'etre was triggering Ahab, and no amount of harpooning was going to dissuade him from trolling and no argument, no matter how unassailable and reasoned, could dissuade Ahab from his vendetta.

Scary encounter with Mountain Lion cubs and mom

BSR says...

I took a 2,500 mile mountain bike trip back in 2011. I was aware of the problem of loose dogs chasing bikes. With two saddlebags strapped to my bike with my belongings I knew I would not be able to outrun a Chihuahua let alone a pitbull, German shepherd or a bear.

I carried an air horn from Walmart that I attached to the bike with Velcro for a quick grab. I had no less than 7 dogs surprise me during my trip. The air horn was very effective in showing them who's boss. Their ears fold back and their tail tucked between their legs while running in the opposite direction.

Even if a dog managed to grab me, I doubt it would be able to withstand the hurt it would inflict blasting in its ear at close range.

Edit: I'm assuming no one thought I would shove the air horn in the dogs butt.

Maybe not even a gun but a loud horn would be enough

Gundam Robot Yokohama, Japan Walk Testing!

lucky760 says...

Holy cow, is that for realz? Oh snap!

That seems way too heavy to be practical. Seems it should be made of carbon fiber or something. Who pours the vast sums of money into something that's effectively just really cool cosplay?

Btw, false advertising! Walk testing, not so much. More like lifting a leg to pee testing. Still this is exciting, but I'll be more excited when it really is walking.

Bob,

Here's where we agree on something.

I came from amazing wealth, like total top .01%, then lost everything and ended up in absolute poverty. I taught myself a valuable skill and kept building and building on it. It started with shit jobs, but I kept learning and doing more and never stopped believing in myself or in my ability to better my circumstance. I went to college and learned how to learn more efficiently. Even now, I'm improving my skills on a daily basis. 40 years later, now I'm in the 1%.

This is America to me, one part of it: that in America, you at least have a chance -- however small, however improbable -- to better yourself through your own skills, drive and determination. It's not a 100% guarantee, but I honestly haven't seen another country that fosters this attitude.

For the nb, did I have a leg up? Definitely. I was born with an extraordinary mind into a hyper-affluent family. As a child I went to the best public schools in America during a time when education was valued above all else. By the time my mom and I were basically on the street, I had enough base knowledge to build on what I'd already learned. I also took advantage of community college when it was all but free ($50 a semester) and was able to take pretty much any class that interested me. I was also able to afford a computer when they were very expensive and complicated.

Finally, I was born a white male and caught innumerable breaks because of that. I have zero doubt that I am where I am in part to this accident of birth, because I was told by cops, teachers and employers, sometimes quite openly and sometimes in coded language, that I was preferred over non-white people.

For all America's sin -- and many be thy score -- the nucleus of true capitalism is still alive.
