What a Sword Really Sounds Like Being Removed from a Sheath
Hollywood movies aren't an accurate portrayal of real life? I am shocked and appalled to learn this.
Anyway, I remember being very disappointed the first time I drew a katana (THE BESTESTEST SWORD..... <jeremy_clarkson>IN THE WURLD</jeremy_clarkson>) and it didn't make a "sching" noise.
Apparently there is actually a trope for this. It's called Audible Sharpness. <- DO NOT CLICK THIS LINK.... that way lies madness.
Unsheathed katana - practise fail compilation
I don't get your point. Why does there have to be a purpose?

It's a skill. You practice it and you master it. The reasons why are down to the individual.
People still work in wood using hand tools, when we have machine tools and 3d printers.
People still draw when we have cameras. Hell, people still use film in cameras.
To go further, what is the useful purpose of football? or baseball or any sport? People do things because they enjoy them.
So why spend time learning to cut with a katana?
There are lots of reasons. Some are respecting a tradition and culture they feel still has something to offer. Some apply the discipline and focus it requires to other aspects of their life.
And some people just think swords are cool.
Just have to say. I don't get it. Is it useful? is there a point? is there a reason? Is there a purpose? It all seems like tradition for traditions sake. I admit it takes time and practice, but is it a skill? and if so, I need to smoke what your smoking, because to me it's just middle aged men cutting shit with a sharp object.

GREATEST Fight Scene EVER
Man, I haven't watched a martial arts film in ages.
The thing I always liked about Jackie Chan was the humour and ingenuity of the choreography. The fight scene at the end of Fearless with the 3 segment whip and Katana is probably my favorite though.

You mean that the kid chopping up water bottles in his driveway isn't a professional assassin because his sword isn't expensive enough? Thanks for clearing that up.
>> ^ChaosEngine:
The sword he's using is a "Musashi Damacus Katana", which is a whopping $180 on their website.
Now call me skeptical, but I do not believe you can buy a quality sword for $180 (given that a decent blunt iaito starts at around $600 and a proper shinken starts at several thousand).
So really, this is just some muppet with a crappy sword who thinks he's a "ninja".
The deal with Cold Steel blades is that for the price, you get better steel and better precision craftsmanship than someone in their class 500 years ago could never have or afford. They are strong n durable, sharp as fuck, and they take an edge like nobody's business. I have had and still have several examples of Cold Steel's folders and fixed blades. Good shit, highly recommended.

Anyone consider that this might just be a dude with a serious dose of self-irony, and the balls to make fun of himself?
i laugh at this line of reasoning... if he is someone who has an incredible sense of irony, and the balls to make fun of himself... HE MADE THIS EXPECTING TO BE MADE FUN OF
meaning everyone but the people "stepping in to combat internet bullying" are IN ON THE JOKE, or at least taking an active role in it
the only people not.... internet bully police
and if he didn't do it for that reasoning, it doesn't mean it's wrong to make fun of it either...
political correctness and sensitivity are EVILS in today's society and actually work to the detriment of harmony and understanding
everything is not equal, if everything isn't game
and nothing is TOO SERIOUS to make fun of

DrewNumberTwo kinda stole my thunder (and eloquently at that), but perhaps there's still enough room to ask: how do you know so much about ancient japanese weapons without evidence of such study confining your own self to a certain stereotype that this young man belongs to as well?
Well, aside from the fact that I wasn't really taking it all that seriously (see my reply to drew), I've studied Aikido (including bokken work) for a good few years now and I'm currently looking into getting an iaito (hence looking at the prices of them) and starting Iaido once I get through my next grading. I wouldn't claim to be an expert in any way, but I know enough to recognise this as bullshit.
As for stereotyping myself, I'll happily admit that if anyone shows the slightest interest, I will bore them to death talking about Aikido (of which I know a little bit) and martial arts in general (of which I know bugger all).
But I don't go around cutting bottles in half with a pos "sword" and putting it on youtube.
