Jon Stewart on Charleston Terrorist Attack

Terrorist attacks are really rare too. The US government seems happy to 'turn the country inside out' to be seen to be catching and preventing them.

To take a less emotional counterpoint :

a) Internal attacks like this, when considering the massive population of people (1/3rd of a billion), are extremely rare. Lightning strikes compete very well with these in terms of lethality. So what exactly do you do? Turn the country inside out (do things legislatively/executively that affect everyone) because there's a chance that 1 in 300 million people will once every year or two do something like this?

Also) Southern generals fought over secession. Today, the civil war is taught as being largely over slavery - but that's heavily revisionist, since at the time of the civil war the war's implications on slavery weren't even mentioned outside of black newspapers. White people were fighting over who gets to run the south, the south, or the much richer and better politically connected north.

To illustrate, the emancipation proclamation only freed slaves in the states participating in the cesession, not elsewhere. The remainder were freed after the civil war. Reason dictates that it was done primarily to cause disruption in the rebelling south, and not for any particular racial sympathy. (Here's a map for those interested. States marked in blue got to keep their slaves : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Emancipation_Proclamation.PNG).

In general, throughout human history, the defeated are usually historically revised to appear as bad as possible, so there are no questions about whether the right thing was done, and no sympathies linger for the defeated. So the south being turned into a ~1~dimensional~evil~enslaving~caricature~ of history is rather normal. Although, critical thinking people should probably know better than to fall for ancient propaganda.

What is this thing and what's it doing?

UPDATE below also see new video description and original video

The caption is in Thai and describes the creature as a Nemertea, or a ribbon worm, which shoots a proboscis (elongated nose) out of a hole above its mouth to capture prey.

Presumably, that is what is going on here.

When not stretched out like an alien life form, the proboscis normally sits in “a fluid-filled chamber above the gut,” according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

And here’s a description of how it works from NCSU:

"When the animal senses a prey organism nearby, a circular muscle layer around the proboscis sheath rapidly and vigorously contracts. This contraction forces the fluid from the proboscis sheath into the proboscis and, in the process, literally turns it inside out, blowing it out of the proboscis sheath. The proboscis will rapidly (within a second or so) wrap itself around the prey, which is then drawn to the mouth and eaten."

Why do mirrors flip horizontally (but not vertically)?

SquidCap says...

When you think about it hard enough you come in to conclusion that since the only external self-image we have are from looking at mirrors and that the mirror actually shows you back-to-front.. (shudder...)

You know when you look at a photo of yourself and it looks really really odd? That is because pictures are in normal order along depth axis, which means they are not reflections, you are not used to seeing yourself that way. The tiny tiny little details only you know so well are all reversed in your head and thus the creature from blue lagoon is what your brains see in that photo. Only others see you as you really look... And only you know how it looks from inside out, ie, depth axis reversed.

So in a sense, every time you look at yourself in the mirror, you are inside out.

Keeping Russia's sidewalks free of douchy drivers

Oh man, I've been watching their other videos...
These guys seem to have an approach that's very effective for the people they're dealing with. And they're some of the calmest and bravest people you'll ever see.

I've learned one thing though; I could never live in Russia. There is one type of aggressive, hollow, bullying personality that is my personal nemesis. It turns my brain inside out and sets my adrenaline pumping like nothing else. In these videos, you see it over and over and over again. My worst nightmare encounter appears to be fairly common in Russia.

The Kalam Cosmological Argument

shinyblurry says...

Because the Christian religion is based not on myth, but entirely on a historical claim, which is that Jesus was raised from the dead. I believe that He was, that there is good evidence to believe that He was, and it has been my personal experience that it is true. The central claim of the Christian religion is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Paul made this comment:

1 Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.
1 Corinthians 15:18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
1 Corinthians 15:19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
1 Corinthians 15:20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

The bible tells us in John 3:3 that we must be born again. We are born again when we place our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, when we believe that He paid the price for our sins on the cross and that He was raised from the dead. When that happens God sends the Holy Spirit to dwell within us. The Holy Spirit transforms us from the inside out and makes us new people.

In my personal experience, this has happened to me. When I was baptized, I went into the water as one person and came out a different person. I had been transformed on the inside in an instant, losing a lot of baggage and depression and gaining a perpetual sense of Gods presence, and an inner peace and joy that was never there before. I didn't expect this, or anything, to happen. It is a fulfillment of the truth of what the scripture says happens when you are born again.

Just outta curiosity, why is your creation myth somehow superior all the other creation myths out there? Apparently, and correct me if I'm wrong, your belief is that the Judeo-Christian god created the universe and you base this on the Bible. You embrace this belief, yet discard all other versions of the story of creation. Why is your myth "right" and all others incorrect?
