Auto-Tune The News #2: Gay Marriage, Drugs, Pirates

Frans Brüggen - "Pavane Lacryme" (van Eyck)

Ornthoron says...

This is beautiful! *promote

The piece is a set of variations over a theme by 16th century composer John Dowland. The original has wonderful lyrics:

Flow, my tears, fall from your springs!
Exiled for ever, let me mourn;
Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings,
There let me live forlorn.

Down vain lights, shine you no more!
No nights are dark enough for those
That in despair their lost fortunes deplore.
Light doth but shame disclose.

Never may my woes be relieved,
Since pity is fled;
And tears and sighs and groans my weary days
Of all joys have deprived.

From the highest spire of contentment
My fortune is thrown;
And fear and grief and pain for my deserts
Are my hopes, since hope is gone.

Hark! you shadows that in darkness dwell,
Learn to contemn light
Happy, happy they that in hell
Feel not the world's despite.

is it me, or is it laughably obnoxious when wikipedia is referenced in a serious discussion?

You should read the studies that have been done on Wikipedia. For example, there was a study done around 2005 by the science journal Nature that found it to be of the same order of accuracy (or inaccuracy) as Encyclopedia Britannica, which I believe is considered the most prestigious encyclopedia.

Articles in mainstream news sources, like Newsweek, on academic areas in which I have specialized knowledge commonly have groan-worthy inaccuracies or POV-pushing, or they make statements that aren't up-to-date, so I think we have an essentialist's tendency to overestimate the difference in accuracy between conventional sources and Wikipedia.

Also, at 3 million articles, Wikipedia has 30x the number of articles (e.g. 1) as Britannica, so unless you only care about a fraction of humankind's knowledge, or you have endless time to read textbooks in hundreds of academic fields, Wikipedia is the only game in town.

What the Problem Is Is "Is Is"

ravioli says...

Otherwise, here are some free Rules of Thumb for improving your writing skills. Most of them apply in other languages as well.
(from my pal Rootlesstree) :

1. Verbs has to agree with their subjects.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.
4. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
5. Avoid clichés like the plague. (They're old hat).
6. Always avoid annoying alliteration.
7. Be more or less specific.
8. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are (usually) unnecessary.
9. Also, too, never, ever use repetitive redundancies.
10. No sentence fragments. No comma splices, run-ons are bad too.
11. Contractions aren't helpful and shouldn't be used.
12. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
13. Do not be redundant; do not use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous.
14. One should never generalize.
15. Comparisons are as bad as clichés.
16. Don't use no double negatives.
17. Eschew ampersands and abbreviations, etc.
18. One -word sentences? Eliminate.
19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
20. The passive voice is to be ignored.
21. Eliminate commas, that are, not necessary. Parenthetical words however should be enclosed in commas.
22. Never use a big word when a diminutive one would suffice.
23. Kill all exclamation points!!
24. Use words correctly, irregardless of how others use them.
25. Understatement is probably not the best way to propose earth shattering ideas.
26. Use the apostrophe in it's proper place and omit it when its not needed.
27. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."
28. If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: resist hyperbole; not one writer in a million can use it correctly.
29. Puns are for children, not groan readers.
30. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.
31. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
32. Who needs rhetorical questions?
33. Exaggeration is a million times worse than understatement.
34. Proofread carefully to see if you (have) any words out.

Superman III "Cyborg scene"

redyellowblue says...

ctrlaltbleach, OMG. I haven't seen this scene in over 20 years. Last i remember it I was really freaked out by it too. Though somehow all these years I thought it may had been a dream I had, or a combination of memories of Luke falling into the carbon freeze hole coming awefully close to a bunch of wicked metal parts. It is pretty goofy now, but now that I think about it, it still is messed up. That woman groaning is pretty disturbing. I'm gona watch it again.

Holy moly that was superb.
Just mesmerizing. The video on its own would have been great, but with the SOUND... that was amazing. Such bizarre sounds. For a large portion of the start once it had separated it sounded like it was breathing.
Just amazing stuff. How this went back into your personal queue is beyond me.

I agree. I especially like the water sounds at the end. And the groaning of the metal, of course.

The video never was in my personal queue, the promote only makes the siftbot say that stock phrase.
