5200 Drone light show, Breaking 4 World Records - High Great

StukaFox says...

If you watch this and feel anything but complete terror, you're missing the point. An AI controlled drone swarm is a military nightmare: you can blind radar; shut down comms; interrupt C3 at a crucial moment.

The things that can be done with a thousand cheap drones and some basic AI can render billion-dollar military systems moot in the event of real combat. The US Navy is already shitting themselves over this (there's already been a few incidents, most recently off the coast of San Diego), and the USAF isn't far behind. Serious drones incidents -- from unknown attackers -- have happened in the US. This including an attempted attack on a power station and a bizarre cat-and-mouse game between USBP/HLS and an unidentified "super drone" over Arizona on more than one occasion.

Did you notice what they were displaying? This wasn't meant to be oo-aah cute, this was China telling the US military they fuck around at their own risk. The last time someone sent a message this clearly, Billy Mitchell was flying a biplane over a captured German destroyer.

"Far less chance for severe mishaps, too" -- I know you meant something totally different, but in the case of what I'm talking about, the exact opposite holds true.

cloudballoon said:

These drones light shows are feeling samey-samey real fast, no "wow" factor anymore to me just like fireworks, though they can convey any messages (propaganda?) far more clearly and inventively if done right. But at least these drones get reused events after events. Hopefully the environmental impact is less than fireworks at the end of the their days.

Far less chance of severe mishaps too.

Exploding Glitter Bomb 4.0 vs. Package Thieves

newtboy says...

If you kill them, they won’t learn anything.
Some acid or debilitating poison instead of the stink spray, especially with a camera assisted eye targeting system….I could get behind that.

TheFreak said:

Can we just take "glitter" out of this concept and do away with package thieves once and for all?

Exploding Bomb Package would solve the problem at the source.

Can Spinlaunch throw rockets into space?

maestro156 says...

Yeah, 20000ft is roughly 6km. The air density is about 1/2 but from what I can determine that doesn't equal 1/2 air resistance, but something more like 90-95% air resistance of sea level.

Having said that, I haven't studied aerospace engineering, so I might be getting the details wrong.

There are definitely some minor advantages to building on a mountainside, but I don't think they outweigh logistical difficulties under normal circumstances.

The idea has a good bit of scifi (and probably scientific) history behind it though. I believe Heinlein used a railgun cargo launcher from the moon in Moon is a Harsh Mistress and a mountainside sled rocket in one of his earlier books.

Project Rho is a great resource for hard scifi and rocketry research for writers. http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/surfaceorbit.php is the link to a page that discusses maglev, railguns and rocketsleds.

I’m thinking Mt Chimborazo in Ecuador…at over 20000 ft, it’s peak it the farthest from the center of the earth (while not being the highest above sea level thanks to the equatorial bulge).
Sure, it doesn’t remove air resistance or friction, but halving it, even cutting it by 1/3 is a massive leap in efficiency and negates much of the extreme engineering and materials needed to overcome the friction….plus, as you mentioned, there’s the rotational speed advantage from launching on the equator vs Florida.
Also, while extremely minor, there’s also a slight reduction in gravitational pull at those heights. A joule saved is a joule earned!

New Rule: Words Matter | Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO)

cloudballoon says...

That's a gem in this segment of the show.

Of all the things I don't agree with Maher (recently of the Mask Mandate, sooooooooo misinformed and/or self-centered, he's part of the prolonged problem), I must say, his fixation on not cancelling anyone and while urging people not being snowflakes are right stands for me. As much as a "political opposite" some people are to me, I'm actually far more interested in the reasons behind why they take those stands, whether they care to explain themselves or not (because, come on, we KNOW American culture breeds goats and they can only parrot what their political/religious/news/social media overlords tell them without understanding the ulterior motives behind their words & actions). I've long given up expecting one half of the population to be able to articulate thoughts.

His shows are still able (willing?) to invite "both sides" to the table. For that, his shows are worth watching.

5SF: Sheet Ghost

BSR says...

The sheet slipped its corner under the crack in the door, inching through with a mind of its own. She froze staring at it, her leg half out the window. Max stopped screaming. They just watched as the fabric kept pooling inside, about to take human shape again.

Calmly, Max turned to her and spoke deeper than he ever had before, somehow knowing it was the end. As the sheet rose behind him, he intoned to her: “Why couldn’t you save me, Mom?”

Taiwan: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

newtboy says...

You really are such a cowardly baby, Bob. You look stupid and weak being too cowardly to say what you mean and hiding behind this idiotic, two year old level insult and your sock puppets. Grow up, comrade. Get some balls.

Fuck you Tiananmen Trump. See, not hard for adults with a spine.
I see you’ve forgotten how much praise Trump lavished on China, how he supported Xi in everything he did, from exterminating Uyghurs to the crackdown on Hong Kong, the expansions in Tibet and the Western Pacific, Trump supported China 100% until his trade talks fell apart….and was paid handsomely by China.

If Biden is Beijing Biden, Trump’s real name must be Wang No Xi.

You just keep reminding us that Trumpists are so unintelligible and moronic that, to say “fuck you” to their president, they chant “let’s go Brendon” and think they’re clever.

British R really polite when they drive (European Vacation)

psycop says...

'Tis but a flesh wound!

I can attest my mum would not brook any impoliteness or swearing out of me, until she was behind the wheel, at which point she did little else.

British people, and perhaps people in general, are often incredibly nice in person, but put a pane of glass between them and the most wonderful language blooms.

TX law & tattoos

Anom212325 says...

Legally its not, you just have to look at the punishment to see that. legality aside, killing another innocent human being is murder. I'm just calling it for what it is and not hiding behind a legal term.

"TX can execute them. If the doctor and staff that performed the termination are known and enter TX they are murderers also. They can be killed by the state, too." When did I say that ? Your grasping at straws now. You know the legal consequences of those actions in Texas.

Murder: the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another

noseeem said:

Now it's not so easy.

Even TX recognizes women can terminate a pregnancy. They just decided to game the system to make it difficult to obtain in TX.

It's not murder.

But - in your mind - if mother and daughter drive to another state, one of them have the procedure, then returned, the daughter and mother, are now murderers. TX can execute them. If the doctor and staff that performed the termination are known and enter TX they are murderers also. They can be killed by the state, too.

Nope. Not that easy.

Because it is not murder.

Let this guy make that case: https://tinyurl.com/ma4sjz3v

Thanks for your honesty. And responding. So many just spout and run out.

Tales From the Far Side Parts 1 & 2

As someone who has the two volume compendium of Far Side, and who remembers these animations from the mid 90's.....nope.
For me, Larson is funniest when you figure out all the little jokes behind the main joke. It doesn't work for me when they beat each joke into the ground.

This Japanese Bassist Must Be STOPPED (Bass Battle)

SFOGuy says...

Awesome.

Sadly, I can't find minutes of Mina, from the Japanese band "Girlfriend" to just stream behind my Excel spreadsheets while I'm working lol.

Apparently, and I have no real idea--she's self taught and has a video where she shows what she could do at each level of the 10 years it took her to get that good?

Taliban flaunt weapons, dollars after US flees

newtboy says...

Derp.
Better a useful tool than a useless fool....fool. (and every sentence needs a verb, Bob. When you can't even write in what you claim is your native language, you might refrain from insulting those who can. This is why graduating the 8th grade isn't enough education. It makes you an ignorant idiot no reasonable person will listen to.)

First, Open the Books is not a trustworthy or unbiased source of information. OpenTheBooks.com was founded in 2011 (to try to embarrass Obama) by its chief executive officer Adam Andrzejewski, an Illinois entrepreneur and past Republican candidate for governor, with former United States Republican Senator Dr. Tom Coburn as the honorary chairman. It's highly partisan and biased.

Most of those vehicles and weapons we did leave/are leaving, like the cash, were in the hands of the Afghanis when Trump sounded retreat last spring. To "secure/remove/destroy" them we either have to stay and support the government (too late, would have needed to start before releasing the Taliban's army last March), or go to war with the Afghan government and seize it by force, they wouldn't just hand it back...duh.
We aren't "leaving them behind", we gave them to the government that Trump abandoned last spring when he released 5000 hard core Taliban fighters from prison (more than the original Daesh) with no conditions (and without consulting with the Afghan government) and allowed them free reign to destroy the Afghan government while we sat by, not even really preparing to leave but not helping the Afghanis....and he apparently told them they could do whatever they want except attack the retreating Americans, and they did....but sure, that's Biden's fault. 🤦‍♂️

Biden failed to be prepared for the speed of the fall of their government, a failure to be sure, but Trump all but ensured it would be fast and that we would be unprepared. Biden should have been evacuating our allies and helpers since Jan 21....Trump should have started the evacuation of Afghanis in March 2020 but instead his administration wouldn't even consider letting them come to America, so there was no process or staffed department when Biden took over and stopped Trump's attempted civil war and dealt with the out of control Trumpidemic, just a round file and a blind eye for all refugee applications. Recently Biden's administration changed this, creating programs and staffing to accommodate the refugees and convincing our allies to accept many in Europe, something Trump didn't even try.

Trump didn't do anything to get this equipment out of the country for a year either, did he? His plan was to be out 100 days after he left office, but nothing was in the works to make it happen...Too busy campaigning, pushing fraud frauds, and starting coups.

Try again.

Newtboy you such a TOOL

The only blame is that Biden did not secure / remove/ destroy these.

Total Failure on Biden's watch.
