Ant carries out life-saving amputation on injured nest mate

According to The Guardian:
Scientists say their discovery is the first example of a non-human animal carrying out life-saving amputations, with an ant removing a limb and cleaning and licking the leg wounds of a nest mate to prevent the onset or spread of infection

However, I see no evidence that the leg was in need of amputation. I know who here I'd go to if I did need a leg off - it looks like a nice clean job - but I'd double-check it's definitely past repair first.
