Adam Ruins Everything: Polygraph Tests

Lawdeedaw says...

I don't assume anything more than Adam is assuming. He even says police don't believe in it yet claims it is believed in...

And what are you saying about Africa? I made the point to say,
A-Some Africans believe in something, but most do not. It should not be attributed to their population at large.
B-In this same manner a relatively few (even 1/2 million Americans is a paltry sum, since our population is in the hundred millions) Americans believe in lie detectors.

I did not imply anything more. Nothing about educating, nothing about anything. It was a comparison. I guess you could infer it, but then I am fine with videos like this (So long as they don't blow the proportions out of proportions.)

Again, my point is clear. A very minor amount of people believe. Just like a flat earth is still believed in. Unfortunately people lose perspective of HUGE numbers, like millions. So yeah, there is that.

newtboy said:

Unfortunately, I disagree. Far too many people believe lie detectors work, in the same way many believe finger prints are completely unique and identifying them is a science...it's not, that's why computers can't be used to identify fingerprints, it takes a human 'fingerprint artist'. Even many law enforcement agencies still use polygraphs as factual tools.

Wait...so in your second paragraph you admit that many probably really believe in lie detectors...but because that doesn't make them degenerates.....um.....what?!? If only SOME Africans believe raping a virgin cures AIDS, you seem to be saying that educating them about their mistaken belief is dumb and a thing to ridicule...ignoring the immense damage those few can do with their mistaken beliefs.

So, you have personal experience with the fallacy of lie detectors, and so you assume everyone knows they don't work? You give others too much credit, I think.

Many law enforcement agencies still treat polygraph results as fact, and have actually tried many times to have them admitted in court as evidence....just like fingerprints, eye witness identification, and even psychics. perhaps most know it's pseudo science, but enough don't know, or don't understand what that means, that pounding it into their heads that it's junk is not just reasonable, it's a necessity.

@shinyblurry, respectfully,
The bible lies. It's stories were probably not meant to be an 'explanation' of reality in the first place, but more likely were created as fables to explain morality...thanks Constantine. (So you know, he's the emperor that ACTUALLY compiled the bible together from various oral traditions, as a political ploy to consolidate religions to make them easier to control.)

You and I have been over this claim repeatedly...Not a whit of EVIDENCE has ever been provided to me, only idiots regurgitating nonsense from 2000+ years ago-
(nonsense made up mostly by Arab/Semitic nomads thousands of years before they were written, likely made up as morality tales, also to 'explain' how they thought certain things worked before the scientific method came around to actually explain reality...examples, the sun and universe spin around the flat earth, the sun rides on a chariot, witches and demons are responsible for any bad thing that happens, etc.)
-idiots who change their interpretations when their current interpretation is shown clearly and undeniably to be completely wrong and indicative of a lack of basic understanding. As evidence goes, that's evidence that religion is wrong and harmful, not that it's correct and helpful.

If god is going to provide evidence of his existence to me, he's taking his sweet time and allowing the issue to be confused with 'facts' and 'reality'. (I'm assuming that's what you meant, and not that there would be proof of polytheism, as you wrote).

The sooner you come to grips with all that, the sooner you can stop saying ridiculous things as 'fact' and ignoring fact as either 'willful suppression of god's grace' or 'Satan tricking you'. It's odd to me that no religious people ever think the bible itself might be a creation of Satan, tricking you into terrible behavior and hatred of 'infidels', encouraging and causing behavior it specifically forbids (Eg-stoning to death/thou shalt not kill...worshiping crosses and or statues of Jesus/thou shalt not create any graven (carved) images).

I hope reality will provide everyone with evidence of it's existence, and people will stop suppressing the truth because they love their religion.

That article is terrible. For a start, they have the whole flat earth thing completely backwards. It was a scientific consensus that eventually convinced the ruling (religion based) culture that the earth was round, because of the evidence.

Exactly what is happening now with climate change.

But I'll grant that they certainly have better climate change credentials than anyone here. That doesn't make them right. What would make them right would be publishing a peer reviewed paper with new models and predictions and falsifiable results.

Anyway, a few seconds googling sees them pretty much torn to shreds.

Im' starting think that climate deniers genuinely don't understand the scientific method. It's simple; if there wasn't significant evidence that AGW was happening then it would be torn apart by other scientists. That's what peer review is for.

The authors of this article (both of them meteorology professors) have better climate science credentials than you do. One even served within the climate group that shared the Nobel prize with Al Gore for climate change advocacy.

Common Physics Misconceptions - Minute Physics

spoco2 says...

This is a bit wanky.

I mean, the stuff is cool, I just dislike the intro saying that we were 'lied' to in early school to the extent of flat earth vs round.

No, we're taught a far easier to understand approximation that is accurate enough to carry us through our ENTIRE lives if we aren't going to get into astrophysics or other fields where this sort of minuscule level of accuracy is required.

You try to teach kids this high level stuff and you end up them not taking ANY of it in.

This sort of pedantry is what would make for a NOT good teacher, spending entire lessons on the minutia of things rather than what matters will turn off kids in droves.

Reading the flat earth forums is a lot of fun.

The was one thread that seemed to suggest that the round earth deception began with aristotle proclaiming that men had more teeth than women...Truly these people are insane.

I like how he urges people to go out and investigate mainstream scientific beliefs for themselves, but doesn't do it himself. What "really solid evidence" has he found for his flat earth hypothesis? Shut the front door, dude.

@kceaton1 - i'd also just like to mention the issue of reference frames. We can tell if we're accelerating compared to an intertial frame. If we are spinning centrifugally then the entire universe and everything in it must also be accelerating centrifugally, and to explain the fact that we can see stars around us as though the universe is not accelerating centrifugally, we have to say it must also be spinning centrifugally with us. The size of the centrifuge would require that centrifuge to break the speed of light as well.

And we've BEEN to the moon, and experienced a lower gravity (aside from seeing that the earth is a sphere too). So now the moon has to be accelerating at g/4 = something like 2.5 m/s^2.. So now what? We can't both be accelerating centrifugally such that when we stand on either we see both as inertial yet we can look up and see the other.

But wait, suddenly now he has to invent a reason why the stars change as you travel further and further across flat earth.

And what invisible instantaneous scooping mechanism is it that stops the water from draining away? And what stops YOU from walking over the edge and deposits you back on the other side so you don't notice a thing?

EDIT AND TLDR:

I just had to stop myself short. The amount of things that don't add up is huge.
