What Are You Doing With Your Life? The Tail End

StukaFox says...

I don't often say this, but fuck this video.

If you're 25, the end of your life is an abstraction and the whole "there's time to change things!" is a nice balm. When you're 55, your death isn't an abstraction, it's a fact of life that dominates more and more of what remaining time you have left. The awareness of impending mortality is insidious once you're passed 50. It creeps into every part of your life and every decision you make.

Let me teach you one of those amazing words the Germans come up with for describing various forms of existential agony: weltschmerz. Loosely, this is a form of sadness when one realizes what is versus what could have been. This is the compound interest of regrets and choices not made, or made poorly. Not only does weltschmerz grow with each year, its very presence amplifies itself because the more you know what could have been, the more you see what the cost of that absence is. Then, if that's not evil enough, that knowledge focuses the mind on the time remaining and how little you can do to negate the harm done, which then re-amplifies the weltschmerz.

You can slap whatever Hallmark bullshit you need on this to get through the day, but weltscmerz never goes away. It's always there. It's there at 3:00am when you wake up in a silent house and look at everything around you as consolation prizes for races not won. It's there when you see your friends succeeding in a million different ways that you didn't. It's there when you look at 6 million lines of text you wrote and realize you're not going to be Hemingway after all.

So fuck this video. I don't need a cutesy animated memento mori, I've already got a wall clock in my death row cell.

Here endth the rant.

(Nick Drake nailed weltschmerz perfectly in "When The Day Is Done". Here's the video to that song:

Diatoms: Tiny Factories You Can See From Space

BSR says...

This "business" has been out of control for eons. It's a fact of life we are all condemned to die so there is no such thing as "lucky" to live through anything.

Worlds end everyday here on earth at an average that lasts about 80 years. Some peacefully, some not so much. The question is, did you make someone's dream come true while you were here? This, Worlds on Earth Con? To be held from when you get here until you leave. Sign up now. Space is unlimited.

And now, this...

If Meat Eaters Acted Like Vegans

Mordhaus says...

I don't consider the chemical reactions of plants to be the same. I said that 'even' plants have a response to negative stimuli. Animals have instinct, a response coded into their DNA, that allows them to respond to negative stimuli. Does that make them a fully sentient being, capable of self-awareness and logical thought? No, it doesn't.

Do insects have rational thought? Do clams or lobster have rational thought? If your entire goal is to avoid (formerly) living matter that can respond to negative stimuli, then why draw the line at plants? Do you really believe that a sea urchin has more capability of self-awareness than a head of lettuce?

This is the fallacy of logic that lies at the core of vegan ideology. Vegans say "I will eat this item because it doesn't understand pain!" when there are, in fact, many life forms that do not understand pain beyond a stimulus reaction.

The very definition of collateral damage is unintentional destruction/injury. The warplane doesn't go out of it's way to cause it. The goal of the warplane is a valid one, but unfortunate things can still happen.

People are absolutely better or worse beings, based on their actions or inaction. Don't sell yourself short - you're a better person for quitting smoking.
However you didn't quite smoking so you could go up to smokers and pride over them. You did it for yourself or your loved ones.

It's the same for any other choice that means less harm or improvement to someone else life. People who do that are better people.

You're really comparing the chemical reactions of plants vs the thought driven actions of animals? And you wonder why people with that attitude are called barbarians? Please tell me you can tell the difference, and you're just being stubborn.

I've never seen a plant scream and writhe in pain to try to make it stop. I've never seen a plant look depressed, or cower away because of bad memories.
You couldn't be more wrong about the way animals react to pain: Even when animals hear another animal in agony, they will stop doing the thing which they think is causing it. There have been studies where even pigeons will stop pressing a button that gives them food, and even starve themselves when they know that button also causes pain to another animal.

I grew up on a farm too, and the animals were never abused, but they were killed. There is a big difference between how the farm animals behave and how animals in a sanctuary behave - they run around like pets.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I had to come back to watch it again.

Funny, this seems to be one of those things that you either love or don't - maybe sitting through endless Facts of Life, Family Ties sessions in my youth attracts me to this.

Married Gay Couple Fighting DOMA To Be Together In USA

bobknight33 says...

A gay couple living in a society that acknowledges that that being gay is wrong. What do you expect? America to bend over its moral standing for a small % of the population?

Sure lets get right on it. While we are at it ( rewriting morality) lets sanction pedophiles and murdering and alcoholics. After all they were born that way. Right?

Grow up . Accept the fact that life is not fair and it not meant to be fair.

OHHHH rite. You meant no problem for you. I get it now. Sorry, forgive my earlier sarcasm. Misunderstanding.

School Shut Down Due To "Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air" Ringtone

wormwood jokingly says...

This is one mysterious piece of reporting. What was that at the end--The teenager was detained for three hours, but "learned his lesson." What lesson is that?--don't sing on your outgoing message? It's probably annoying, but it's not threatening in the slightest way. It's like taking offense to the "Facts of Life" theme. And who were those parking-lot guys they talked to? And Will Smith is "definitely considered" an accomplice to this incident?

"This was good practice for an actual emergency." --Emergency?

I'm trying to imagine a guy with a "speech impediment" rapping the Fresh Prince theme on his outgoing message. And then keeping it. At least it's not the "Greatest American Hero."

Ancient document talks about Jesus having a wife

Trancecoach says...

they don't make as many facebook posts, or run for political office, or publish books, or run television networks, or foster a frothy mania among tens if not hundreds of thousands of naive-and/or-ignorant-but-certainly-needy people who are sadly and unfortunately easily manipulated by virtue of the fact that life is hard and they need something to believe in.

Isn't it time to drop the charade and own up to the bullshit belief systems and just be kind to people?

>> ^GeeSussFreeK:

@Trancecoach No doubt true of some, I was studying computer science and love philosophy, physical sciences, law and politics, ect while a christian, so it isn't a universal rule. I was lucky that I didn't ever know any of these "fundamentalists" while I was in the church. I met good and decent people, who focused on doing good instead of imposing fear and hate on people. Those people people exist, they just don't make as many facebook posts.

Coke + Raw Pork = Worms!

UsesProzac says...

Why does it have to be vegan propaganda? I am not deterred from eating pork. Parasites are a fact of life and if anything, they're added protein. Just cook your pork thoroughly. @legacy0100 @BoneRemake

I find it to be an interesting experiment that I've carried out on my own, for science of course. I've even eaten that pork. Coke makes a surprisingly good glaze for pork products. Put it on your next roasted ham.

I first encountered this while working at an organic grocery and even organic, free range chops had the same result.

"Muscle biopsy is used for trichinosis detection." Seems to indicate that they can be pervasive in the muscles, which is the part that we eat. Wikipedia even describes Trichinella spiralis as cosmopolitan in distribution. How fancy!

Driver Attemps Hit and Run, Gets Blocked in By Other Drivers

Darkhand says...

You know it's one thing to ding someones car and take off. I don't condone that but I try to say to myself "that person doesn't have a lot of money so they left". Here in NJ everyone has insurance so I call my car insurance company (if the damage is that bad) and they pay for it. Sucks but its a fact of life.

But to actually hit a person like this, who is simply obeying the law then try to run is horrible. Even if the bicyclist WASN'T supposed to use the whole lane there is an entire other lane for you to pass the guy!

I'm glad people finally stopped to help. I hate those videos where everyone just walks by like "Huh I wonder why that guys bleeding on the sidewalk there? That's strange." and then keep walking.
