Keanu Reeves Tactical 3 gun shooting

ChaosEngine says...

@bareboards2, I get where you're coming from.

I think one would have to be naive in the extreme not to admit that women especially are discriminated on based on their looks (both positively and negatively).

That said, I do find it uncomfortable judging people on their looks. Neither you nor I know these women; some of them might be there purely as eye candy, but they could equally just be really good at what they do.

As a straight white male, this is really a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. Comment on their looks, and I'm either objectifying them or assuming competency based on their looks. Don't say anything and I'm giving tacit approval to employers deliberately choosing women based on their looks ("hey man, you hire *whoever* you want.... nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

note: this is not a complaint... straight males are in this situation because we put ourselves here.

Now... all that said: I think you're almost certainly right about THIS company. Their instagram is pretty damning in that respect.

Keanu Reeves Tactical 3 gun shooting

newtboy says...

Isn't it pretty unfair to those women too? Even more than to Keanu?

Because they may be attractive or fit, she's actually saying they're all only there as eye candy. It's as if she believes they couldn't possibly have anything else to offer because they're somewhat attractive.
To me, that's far more insulting and dismissive of the average women's abilities than they would be if she were 100% correct and they were only there as eye candy for men.

ChaosEngine said:

That seems kinda unfair on Keanu. This is not him hanging out with friends, this is a montage of him training at a tactical shooting school. The “super attractive women” are employees of the school (have seen them in other videos).

Suicide Squad - Official Trailer 1

jmd says...

#1 ok, i thought it was supposed to be a tv series, not a movie.

#2 forming a team of villains to do a job that apparently no heros can do... what the fark.. that is the oldest, lamest, plot in the book.

#3 despite what looks to be a "villains in the early days" origin, seems like very little origin story going on and more like a quick romp through a city to do..something.

#4 There seems to be a lot of special FX going on for the sake of eye candy, almost in a Joel Schumacher way.

#5 and why queen?

I like the superman movies, I am sooo giving superman vs batman a chance, but this I have serious doubts about. Although it mainly has to do with joker looking like the cover boy for INK magazine.

What happens if you reverse sex roles in advertising?

EvilDeathBee says...

I upvoted for the hilarious fake ads, not for the stupid message at the end.

If women responded to men as men responded to women in the same undressed way, they would use more almost naked men in advertising (if they're trying to sell something other than tampons, yoghurt or cleaning supplies to women). But an attractive man in a well tailored suit is eye candy for women like an attractive woman in lingerie is eye candy for men.

EDIT: I don't mean there's no sexism in advertising. Those stupid Axe/Lynx ads are exactly that, but just an attractive half naked lady, I don't think is

Sinead O’Connor's Open Letter to Miley Cyrus (Sexuality Talk Post)

bareboards2 says...

The last line of Sinead's letter is the most important for Miley's well-being.

The fact that Sinead has aged and is no longer eye candy to be masturbated over is a blessing, not a failure.

Unreal Engine 4 - Infiltrator Demo

jmd says...

This.. is not a tech demo, this is just some eye candy. Tech demo's actually center on and demonstrate individual effects, this does none of that and is probably not even realtime on any current hardware.

The Dark Knight Rises - Trailer #4

It doesn't help that I hated Inception and found Dark Knight rather tedious with the overkill terrorist theme.
I loved Memento and the look of that film but this action stuff and the blend of CGI and live-action doesn't scream eye candy to me.
I played against Bane in that Batman game by the way and I just kept dodging out of his way. Dude's an idiot!

The Bane we see in this movie seems to be a very different animal compared to the version of Bane we saw in Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. I guess Nolan doesn't do wrestling mask wearing roid monsters, and I admit it wouldn't seem his style either. I did get my ass handed to me at first by Bane in Asylum as I'm kinda slow with console style control schemes, I'm a mouse and keyboard user at heart.

Tropes vs Women in Video Games

messenger says...

@Sagemind

A quibble or two aside, just about everything you said, I think, is spot on, but I don't agree with your conclusion that this isn't a useful project, or that video games aren't going to change. What you're missing is that just about every female that we're presented with across all media is from a narrow band of disempowering clichés. It's the "disempowering" part that's key. Yes, there are relatively few male archetypes in video games, but they're almost always valued for their strength, leadership, intelligence, wit, athleticism, skill, sense of humour, bravery, accomplishments, etc. -- in other words, all positive attributes, things most of us would openly encourage in our sons. Women, on the other hand, are almost always portrayed as eye candy, fuck toys, rewards to a man for saving the day, helpless victims, evil bitch nemeses (the only time a woman may commonly achieve self-determination without showing cleavage), selfless helpers of men, and so on, none of which are positive or even neutral models for our daughters.

Awareness of the types of characters we're presenting to children to identify with is important. To a lesser degree, it's also important for adults in terms of not reinforcing those stereotypes. I already consume video games with this kind of critical eye. I'd noticed how cool it was that the Portal games had a main character who's a woman, who's awesome, but who's never sexed up at all. I thought that showed some real balls (ahem) on the part of the developers. Skyrim too seems decent. It has a lot of female characters, and most of them are just whoever they are. None are sexy window dressing, a couple are flirty, and only one that I've come across is overly sexed-up, and then, only in the 1-900-voice-acting department, not her character or appearance.

That two major recent titles avoid female stereotypes is a huge thing, and I think a very positive thing. The more awareness there is of this, the better, IMO.

Who wear short shorts?
Those are pretty perky boobs
Is she wearing a tie?
Maybe it's a medical condition and she can't button up her shirt?
I wonder which part of her job does she take more seriously, a weather reporter or an eye candy?
Does the carpet match the drapes?

stop taking all the jokes!!! u have to pick one
I picked all the bad ones, so you are forced to use only good ones.
