WTF Cops?! - Two Racist Texts and a Lie

Asmo says...

If by "irrelevant" you mean "makes Bobknight33 look like the racist shit he is", then sure...

Funny thing, you're always banging on about how the vids of bad cops (ya know, like these racist assholes) are just the tip of the iceberg and we shouldn't judge them all by the actions of the few.

But that philosophy expires dramatically when we're talking about black folk. It's okay for cops to see them all as niggers, to make awful comments about them. Also women (just for shits and giggles).

Except cops choose to be cops and get accorded power. Black people and women are born that way and are generally worse of for no better reason that whitebread racist men continue to make it that way.

Keep embarrassing yourself with your hypocrisy BK, it's not like a single person other than your circle jerk buddies actually buys the shit your peddling.

Your argument is irrelevant to the topic at hand.
But it is typical for liberals to twist facts to make their argument. I believe it called a straw man.

That sucks and everything, but this seems a bit fishy...

* "State Farm decline to pay for the car's repair, as I was a few hour past the deadline for comprehensive coverage."
The way I read that suggests that it is either a brand new car that he hadn't yet purchased insurance for beyond mandated liability, or that his existing policy had just expired. Both would be kind of red-flag timings for an accident.

* "They also raised my rates and removed my safe driver discount, even though I have never been in an accident that was my fault in 8 years of driving. So that seems a bit unfair."
Getting into an accident raises your rates. Even if it wasn't your fault. This particular incident, giving him 100% of the benefit of the doubt and assuming that it was a medical condition that he had no control over, is still something that an insurer might (reasonably in my opinion) determine to be "his fault". At the very least, they would want assurances that the condition wouldn't happen again; but honestly it would probably be a safer bet (which is what insurance adjustors are all about) to drop his coverage entirely as soon as legally possible.

* And that last one doesn't just apply to the insurer... If that happened to me, even if I had never passed out before and had been driving for 8 years without issue, I'd want to be DAMN sure that it was 100% medically explained and 100% medically under control so that it wouldn't ever happen again before I got behind the wheel of ANY vehicle again.

So yeah, it seems ... fishy. On the other hand, It does seem like it would be hard to have no reflex-level reactions to plowing into fenceposts etc., as in the video. So it might be 100% legit -- but even then, all of the above still applies.

"Unskippable" Geico Ad

newtboy says...

Any newer (< 10 years old?) TV is already digital, and you can just plug a digital antenna directly to it, no box required. If yours is older, you can get a free converter box coupon from the gov. Info found here....
http://www.pbs.org/digitaltv/converter_boxes.php

EDIT: Crap. I didn't read it. The coupon program expired in 2009. Sorry.

Nope.
Not here.
It's all digital here now, so no antenna is going to do the job without hooking up and using the box they supply.

All this feedback is great. You've probably noticed we've already made several changes.

@oritteropo - Great specific suggestions.

Here's what I've done:

I've put the Top 15 New Videos fixed in the top of the sidebar. Below that is a dynamic, rotating panel that will randomly on every page load be one of these:
- Suggested Videos
- Related Videos
- More from this User
- Newest Submissions
- Expiring Soon
- Beggar's Canyon
- *Quality New Videos (brand new!)

Since the top videos are now in the sidebar, it doesn't make sense for them to be in the Watch menu, so it's now removed from there.

RFC: VS6 Sidebar Suggestions (Sift Talk Post)

oritteropo says...

I mostly use related for finding dupes, and only occasionally for finding vids to watch. The suggested vids algorithm sounds too much like what I'd normally click to the front page for.

I do have some suggestions though, some of which used to be a thing and one I'd like to see:

  • The 5 newest submissions
  • 5 other vids from this user
  • 5 vids expiring soon
  • 5 vids from beggar's canyon

Actually, I do quite often look at Top New Videos by Vote, even though I could just click through to the front page. I'm not adding it to my list though, because only taking 5 wouldn't be the same, or as good.

p.s. I also have an argument against removing related from the vs6 sidebar: It does have a place, but finding somewhere else for it in the new layout is a challenge.

VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Video Page (Sift Talk Post)

MilkmanDan says...

I opted back in and did a "standard sift watching session" for me of a few videos.

This time I forced myself to actually look for things that I noticed weren't in the places that I was expecting.

Some more thoughts:

I tried to figure out where to see "who voted for this video", currently under the comment entry box. I can't find that information in beta UI. I must admit that the current location isn't particularly logical, but I know to look for it there and I can't find it at all in the beta.

The "sidebar" content changed from Sift of the Week / Comment of the Moment / Leaderboard List (of whatever section you are currently in; Top New Videos, Top Videos Expiring Soon, etc.) to Suggested Videos and Related Videos. I think the old sidebar content was more likely to be relevant to what I want.

I get that that stuff has been moved into the header menus, but in my opinion it is harder to access there:
For beta - mouse to Watch button/menu, hover, mouse to relevant section like Top New Videos, mouse to which one I want
Old - mouse to what I want in the sidebar, which is probably already visible but not taking up TOO much screen real estate, and if it isn't visible it is a quick mousewheel jump away

In the meantime, the new sidebar makes stuff that I personally don't care about at all BIGGER. I don't understand what/who suggests the "Suggested Videos" and by what criteria they are deemed to be of interest to me, and "Relevant Videos" are mostly relevant in a long-timescale sense (ie., stuff from a single video series, containing same/similar tags, etc.) where on the sift a big part of the appeal is to vote on what is hot NOW. But those two things take up more space than the old sidebar that was filled with stuff that I *did* care about; they are now big thumbnails with a title underneath plus lots of spacing between list items compared to small thumbnail with title *beside* and very minimal extra padding/spacing between list items. So, the new sidebar has stuff I don't want to see, and spaces it out so that I have to scroll the mousewheel a lot more to get through it (even though it has fewer total list items than before!).

A big part of my personal enjoyment and engagement with the sift is video comments. I'm not a big fan of the beta font for comments, but I think I could potentially get used to it. But more important than the font is that it seems like each comment gets less total screen real estate, and there is more padding/space between each comment AND the sidebar.

I'd like to see that spacing/pad cut down to more like the old style. Beyond that, I figure it is safe to assume that you're not interested in bringing the old sidebar content back (Sift of the Week / Comment of the Moment / Top X Videos) from its beta location in the menubar. Assuming that that will stay there, I'd *much* rather see comment boxes that take up the majority of the page width with NO sidebar. Old sidebar and old style comments would be my personal choice, but assuming that isn't going to happen, I just feel like the beta sidebar is unnecessary and massively oversized / overspaced.

So, I gave it another shot ... back to opting out for me for now.

Everything Wrong With Netflix

gwiz665 says...

https://popcorntime.io/ is live and well and better interface than netflix.

I maintain that piracy is a service problem. Too many licensing and UI issues keep people from going legal. Movies should have an expiration of 15 years after which they should just go into public domain online - would solve a lot of problems, and still give movie companies 90 % of the money they get now without all the extra work.

MilkmanDan said:

I had never heard of that before -- pretty cool idea although I've got enough storage available and a fast enough connection that just downloading in advance works fine.

Since you use the present tense "is", I assume that one of the forks is still active? Wikipedia says the original was taken down "under MPAA pressure" (imagine that -- strongarm tactics from the MPAA!).

I like the top menu (the level where the Videosift logo is), it's nice. Can I suggest moving everything up there rightward so it's left alligned with where the video frame begins?

Also I like how you centred the video (got rid of stuff to the side of it) and made it larger. The centred-ness goes well with my OCD

As an idea for the side bar where you currently have Suggested/Related - how about possibly canning Suggested? I feel like Top, Unsifted, 'others in channel' encapsulates it already. How about instead having the following in a browser style tabbed menu (that wouldn't reload page when you select between them):

(1) Top, (2) Unsifted (expiring + beg), (3) Related, (4) Channel (maybe a filter that you select from a drop down of all channel from most popular to least), (5) Top Comments. You could re-use the buttons style you made for the old format for selecting "light/dark" or "newest/upcoming" but larger which would be good for TV/HTPC users.

Also for consistency, how about making that side bar identical in style to the items under the "Watch" menu up top? Actually, maybe only similar, with the same style but larger font and wider like they are now?

VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Video Page (Sift Talk Post)

RFlagg says...

My only issue with the design is the hover comes too quick. I tend to mouse around a lot, and jump tabs while watching videos and even if I am getting ready to tab out for a moment, the hover effect blocking the video sort of irritates. If it pushed the rest of the video down below the hover, that'd be okay, or a slightly longer hover, that'd be good.

Other than the hover effect, I don't mind the layout personally. Sort of a more "Theater mode", which both YouTube and Twitch offer as an option. I'd say perhaps offer this new Theater mode as the default, and if a user sets it to "normal" than allow for that (non-users get a cookie that expires quicker rather than an option setting).

I'm not going to break much new ground with the rest, most of it has been stated and I'm echoing with my own thoughts.

The loss of channels seems odd. Either put it under the submitter or under the description. Same with number of views and video length.

The who voted could be put into the hover effect over the vote counter, again with a small delay.

Perhaps time stamps on the comments.

I'm looking at this via a desktop I should note, with a 1080 screen, so the layout works so far. The vote buttons for me are in a good spot. How this works via mobile I don't know yet.

Health care in Canada

Bruti79 says...

Being a type I diabetic and a two time cancer survivour, it's saved my life.

However, we have a national program that helps keep wait times low, regulates drug purchases, and moderates which provinces/territories get funding from the feds, that is going to expire thanks to our PM.

This means there'll be no federal quality control, and drug purchasing will get downloaded onto the provinces. Some can handle it, most can not.

We have an election in the fall, we'll see if Harper wins. I sure as hell hope he doesn't.

Destiny Live Action Trailer

RedSky says...

Review embargo on the game doesn't expire until release. Usually (especially for MMOs) there's time pre-release for professional reviewers to evaluate the game. When publishers disallow this, it's generally a bad sign.

That and the fact that the beta had a lukewarm reception points to this not being great despite its clearly huge budget.
