Beyond The Crash - The Worst News Of Your Life

transmorpher says...

Really tragic. I honestly don't care if people kill themselves, but when they take someone with them, that is heart breaking.

I believe Darwinism might be the solution here:

Between Midnight and 3 am, drink driving is legal, and no emergency services will respond to accidents. It's kind of like concept of the Purge movies.

People who are dumb enough to drink and drive will wipe themselves out, and everyone else will avoid traveling during these times.

(I'm sure it's a horribly flawed concept, but I like to fantasize about idiots being wiped from the gene pool to help me deal with the grief from these tragic events).

Verizon's throttles firefighters data during wildfire

Jinx says...

I prefer the version where they phone 911, ask for firefighters, and are told that although they have an unlimited fire protection plan they will need to pay to upgrade if they want the hoses and engine, otherwise they'll have to make do with a man and a bucket.

As I understand it, there was some misunderstanding about what "unlimited" means (hint: it means limited...), and that Verizon should not cap emergency services regardless.

Fuck you Verizon.
This commercial is a huge fuck you to the firefighters they claim to serve and the citizens those firefighters do serve,, but firefighters have instead been totally ripped off and put in danger by Verizon. I hope their buildings catch fire and no one comes because the fire house only has Verizon so never gets the call....they deserve it.

Airplane Makes Emergency Landing on Busy California Freeway

Seems to be more than a few people with thoughts along the lines of:
"I know nothing about emergency aid, but let me slow down/pull over and shoot video so that I can block emergency services. I'm going to be Youtube famous!"

Trump Attacks the Mayor of San Juan: A Closer Look

newtboy says...

Bwaahahaha!

Both infrastructures destroyed, but PRs is much better, yet they got less. PR is American, and begged for help during the storm. Haiti almost had no government after the earthquake, we just showed up to help.
You know SOME damage will happen, so prepare....but that ignores the point, Haiti had no warning and no preparation, but twice the help in 1/8 the time, even though they're also an island, surrounded by water, big water, and even though near 100% of structures were destroyed in Haiti with roads blocked and bridges impassable.
FEMA spent millions preparing in Texas and Florida...what's different?
PR requested FEMA help before landfall, and haven't stopped begging for it since.
Really, federal agencies cannot go where they aren't specifically requested by locals even in emergencies...and you think declaring the island (and San Juan specifically) a disaster zone and requesting FEMA and the military isn't a request....who's a moron again?
Couldn't that be 'Joseph Curl admits he hasn't met with San Juan mayor'? It's his job to provide emergency services and supplies, he's failed completely. Hypothetically, if she were killed, incapacitated, or trapped, San Juan just gets abandoned? Besides, pretending they don't have permission to enter town or knowledge of the need without her in person properly formatted request is just ludicrous and moronic.
They have permission, they need drivers that aren't there. They blame locals for not answering their phones and showing up to drive....but 95% don't have electricity, most cell towers are destroyed, and most roads are impassable because FEMA and the military continue to do little....but sure, it's those lazy Puerto Ricans that are the hold up.

Your ridiculous hyper politically biased opinion article actually discredits your contention. She has met them, is in constant contact, and her subordinates are stationed in the FEMA headquarters...she just hasn't wasted her time visiting that headquarters personally because there's no reason to besides a photo op, and she's busy trying to save lives. I'm sure Trump will play that game though, he likes having his picture taken.

Typical liberal trying to twist and combine facts. You are coming off like a pretty big moron. You cant compare Haiti and PR as its a apple/orange situation. Do you know the situation of the infrastructure between the 2? Do you know how the government of each nation reacted? I bet there's a lot of difference between the two.

Also, you dont know how much damage is going to be caused by a hurricane. Why would they ramp up all the services and waste tens of millions of dollars when just a street sign gets blown over? (besides you liberals would then complain about wasting government money for nothing) They knew Katrina and Andrews were coming too but the US government has to wait to see if they are needed.

Also, federal agencies like FEMA have to be requested by the local governments to be there. This is where you guys are such hypocrites. If the military moved into a location and started to take over, you'd be all up in arms about it. Well, FEMA is a federal entity too. They just cant GO into a location if they arent being requested.

As far as the San Juan mayor, here's an article from Oct 1st:
http://www.dailywire.com/news/21758/san-juan-mayor-admits-she-hasnt-met-federal-joseph-curl#exit-modal

I bet even with this smoking gun in this incompetent Mayor, who is a Democrat, that you are still going to blame Trump. You people are so sad.

Living Off the Grid in Paradise

harlequinn says...

You forgot they're off of the water supply "grid" (try living off of rainwater - it's not so easy in some places), the daily food supply "grid" (most people would be screwed without this alone), the emergency services "grid" (for some medical conditions he is buggered, nobody is coming any time soon), the consumable resource supply "grid" (i.e. something breaks, buy a new one the same day).

There's probably more I have missed. How many of these things do you live without on a daily basis?

They have abandoned large segments of "civilisation". There isn't some special line in the sand the you choose that makes them living off of the grid or not.

Shit, 99% of us here don't have to hunt for our own dinner. That alone is a huge difference.

nanrod said:

This is kind of annoying to me. The only grid this guy is living off of is the electrical grid. He's got guns and ammunition, vehicles, boats, internal combustion engines, gasoline, oil etc etc. Take away civilization and he will, of necessity, start to revert to pre industrial living fairly quickly. He's not some eco warrior or rugged individualist protecting nature, he's living off of everybody else's little corner of paradise.

Tears In The Rain - Blade Runner fan film shot for $1500

TheFreak says...

Definitely impressive work for the budget.

While watching it, I couldn't shake my discomfort over the fact that this Blade Runner is rather cruel in his approach to his job. He's part of decommissioning an entire series of replicants. Does he go to every single one and destroy their universe as they die? What kind of sadistic person does that?

And couldn't the manufacturer think of a better way to shut down old units? It seems like using emergency services personnel to individually locate and turn off toasters that are past their warranty date is a waste of public funds. How about just giving the replicants a subconscious urge to migrate to a corporate facility at the appropriate time?

"I don't know why I came here today."
"Don't worry about it, just let me take a look at this expiration date next to the power switch on your neck."
"Wait! I remember things I wasn't programmed foooorrrrrrrr...."
"Did he say something?"
"Dunno. He's powered off now."

I could make that film for $500."

Why You Should Always Watch and Listen for Ambulances

ChaosEngine says...

I don't know what the law is elsewhere, but in NZ, emergency services are allowed break red lights, but they can't be travelling faster than 20kph (~12mph).

The only possible reason for an ambulance to be travelling that fast was if the patient was on the verge of death, and now you've delayed getting them to the hospital even more....

Apple is the Patriot

Daldain says...

I pay taxes on my profit on Apple shares/dividends, does that blow your mind?

I actually get a heap of stuff in return for paying taxes too, roads, education, emergency services, water, electricity supply, security, aquaducts. i.e. a decent civilization. Apple supposedly wants to be home based in that decent civilization and yet doesn't want to contribute to its upkeep like the rest of us.

A First Drive - Google's Self-Driving Car

L0cky says...

Taken to it's logical conclusion (where all road vehicles are automated) things like processing visuals becomes a lot simpler.

Most of the information will be preprocessed data - the road infrastructure, and knowledge of every other vehicle in the system. That's what it becomes - one homogeneous and optimisable system; not a single robot car making it's own decisions. Processing is done by servers in advance, not individual vehicles.

Real time visual processing then only has to be on the look out for things that are out of the ordinary, such as a deer running onto the road, and take caution. Something that is much easier to do when done with well coordinated cooperation with every other vehicle around you. The car behind isn't going to hit you; nor is the oncoming car in the opposite lane.

Even if every car in the situation doesn't have the stopping distance, they will all turn (where possible) in a coordinated manner to avoid or reduce collisions. The situation may be avoided in the first place, because the system knows about dangers specific to this stretch of road and will have limited speed and increase distance between vehicles appropriately.

If there is one thing that humans absolutely suck at, it's unspoken mass cooperation in an emergent system; our roads being the prime example.

People can't even keep the appropriate distance from the car in front to prevent collisions in an emergency stop; let alone leave enough distance to prevent traffic jams. Imagine a red light (real or virtual) turns green, and every car for a mile back accelerates at the same time. There's no queuing (the cause of jams).

Emergency services get a clear, safe and direct path to their destination.

Who knows, maybe the system even knows you have a flight reservation or a business meeting, or if you're just going to the mall or visiting friends and can prioritise intersections accordingly (though that is getting a little Orwell meets Skynet).

The hard part is going to be getting from our current fully manual and emergent system to a fully automated and coordinated system; but I'm really excited by the prospect it might happen in my lifetime.

Health Care: U.S. vs. Canada

chingalera says...

Hey, as long as the no-waiting includes semi-emergency services akin to and with the predictability of the ethics of trauma center care for cost-prohibitive percutaneous coronary intervention, they can bill me...I simply may not be able to pay all at once, but I'll guarantee with confidence and a certainty from experience that I won't get turned-away from the table, with or without insurance. If we have to, and taking a cue from the fine United States citizens bordering our neighbors to the north, we'll simply stroll into Canada-

Everyone's gonna go someday until we don't have to unless we choose to and the alternative to the flesh dying and that kind of longevity probably won't happen for at least a hundred years or more....Timing. Almost everything.

Why Are American Health Care Costs So High?

chingalera says...

Emergency services are all I care about-Bone-sets, stitches, wound care and antibiotics should be free of charge to all citizens of planet Babylon, worldwide. So should general dentistry. The machine (a type of prison) now requires that we play the societal-shuffle according to their economic rules (which are violated with impunity daily by the rule-makers) should not the slave-masters keep their labor force from breaking-down too soon?? Inmates in prisons in the United States receive free emergency and necessary dental maintenance, eh?

How Germans on the Autobahn React to Ambulance Siren

Fade says...

I don't get it? That's perfectly normal driving etiquette. Make way for the emergency services and police? It boggles my mind that there are drivers who wouldn't do that.

And thinking it through...
a) Aggressive parents give 10 year old's their own cell phones these days?
b) Or they pull it out and take down the number with the adult potentially there?
c) or are they really good at remembering phone numbers till they get home? - and they feel safe to make that call at home?

or
d) none of the above. This campaign is pointless.
