Killer Whales Charge Blue Whale (Rare Drone Footage)

lucky760 says...

Orcas are dicks. They often act like humans.

And "largest animal to ever have lived" really? It's not bigger than all the dinosaurs is it?

Or is NatGeo saying there were no dinosaurs?

How Ankylosaurs Got Their Clubs

newtboy says...

Ankylosaurus magniventrishas always been my favorite. Huge (33' and around 8 tons) and one of the spikiest of all ankylosaurs. My favorite dinosaur of all time.
I prefer the theory that it's both false head and weapon. Dinosaurs often didn't have great vision so a false head doesn't have to be very convincing. Getting a predator to attack the club would put it in perfect striking range, the tails weren't as flexible as crocodiles or iguanas, and 8 ton giant bearded dragons don't spin on a dime.

Diatoms: Tiny Factories You Can See From Space

newtboy says...

Diatoms, and other phytoplankton, are incredibly sensitive to ocean PH and CO2 levels. This can be another feedback loop already in action.
As fewer diatoms photosynthesize, more CO2 goes unused, raising the concentration, lowering the numbers and health of phytoplankton, allowing more CO2 to go unused, raising the concentration, .....
Every molecule of CO2 added to ocean systems removes one molecule of carbonate, which is necessary for the uptake of iron among other processes. By 2100, surface carbonate is expected to decrease by up to 50%. That may well be below the levels diatoms can tolerate.

If phytoplankton goes, so does the food web. They are the base. If the ocean food web collapses, eventually the bacteria that eat dead sea life will create huge clouds of hydrogen sulfide that cover the land, poisoning any still living organisms there. This has happened before, but on a much longer timescale, with near life ending results for earth.

Hydrogen Sulfide, Not Carbon Dioxide, May Have Caused Largest Mass Extinction. ... "During the end-Permian extinction 95 percent of all species (and >98% of all biomass) on Earth became extinct, compared to only 75 percent during the KT when the dinosaurs disappeared,"

A better title might be "diatoms, the tiny glass shards that support all life on earth, are struggling".

No joking around about the turkey

newtboy says...

I got up early and cooked a 22lb turkey for over 5 1/2 hours. Rosemary butter all over and injected in the breasts, and nothing else. Turned out great, flavorful and juicy.
Right after it came out, my new oven died, so I had to abandon the already made but uncooked apple pie. Not a big deal, as there were 4 half pies left over when everyone left.

My brother brought his corgie who immediately did a few full speed laps of the yard before performing a beautiful horizontal swan dive into my pond. I gave it an 8.7.

Happy roast a dinosaur for genocide day, everyone.

If you happen to be cooking a Turkey today, do let us know about it in the comments. Holidays can be so amusing, terrifying and plain exhausting. Good luck everyone

(edit) also anything amusing or interesting about your turkey day would be fun to hear about.

Facing the final boss after doing every single side-quest

MilkmanDan says...

This really rang true for me... (Cool Story Bro alert)

I spent a ridiculous amount of time playing two different RPGs in my early teen years: Ultima 6 and Final Fantasy 3 (SNES, FF6 by Japanese reckoning).

I treated Ultima 6 as a world simulator more than a "game", and so I never actually finished it because I had discovered and thrown away key plot items, and done enough"evil" stuff to have low karma that prevented me from actually proceeding with the story. But I didn't care much, I enjoyed just exploring and steamrolling anything that crossed my path.

Final Fantasy 3(6) was more forgiving though. I put experience eggs and other stuff on each character and then ground xp in the dinosaur forest, and eventually got every one up to level 99 with 9999 health and high stats. Similar to Ultima 6, I mainly enjoyed exploring and leveling up, so I had never even tried the final boss battle (Kefka) until I had every single character up to level 99 (not just 4-person party, I mean *every* character).

I figured being the final boss meant that it would be a tough fight no matter what. So I decked out a group of 4 (I liked Edgar, Sabin, Mog, and Umaro as my favorites) all with high end stuff. Edgar had Genji Gloves (dual wield) and Offering (attack 4 times per weapon, so 8 with Genji Glove), with Atma Weapon and Ragnarok swords.

Fight my way to Kefka, and order Edgar to "attack" -- 8 attacks of 9999 damage each, Kefka dies without getting so much as a single turn. Welp, guess I overprepared for that boss!

Homeopathy Explained – Gentle Healing or Reckless Fraud?

Drachen_Jager says...

The core idea behind homeopathy is that water has memory.

So if you put Caffeine in water it "remembers" the Caffeine and when you reduce the amount enough, that causes it to become "negative" which means it'll put you to sleep.

So since all water on Earth has been exposed to other water that was once in contact with every conceivable medication, perhaps we should just drink water instead of paying for some magic water? After all, every bit of water you drink has some molecules that were dinosaur piss once upon a time.

Virgin Atlantic: Flying with kids!

entr0py says...

I think they're just excited about the dinosaur pasta. Bringing kids along would be counter productive, those things have boundary issues.

Hmmm... while I appreciate the inclusion of the gay couple, why are they shown sitting in a double seat, away from their children, when the very first announcement was that you must stay with your children at all times?
