Elon Musk: Making Humans a Multiplanetary Species

BicycleRepairMan says...

My concern is this : Imagine a global extinction event , lets say a repeat of the event that killed off the dinosaurs : a massive asteroid direct hit , instantly killing everything on roughly the same continent or general planetside , such an impact would punch a hole in the very tectonic plate it lands on and cause massive waves not just in water , but in the ground itself , waves of rock and earth surface taveling around the globe meeting on the far side of the impact and ricocheting back again . We are talking GLOBAL earthquakes off the scales, for YEARS after the impact as the tectonic plates are slowliy settling in, all this is followed by a thick cloud of ash from the impact, refueled by frequent vulcanic eruptions , this will block out most sunlight , so after the initial toasting , the few lucky survives of this pandemonium can look forward to hundreds of years of atomic winter. Sounds pretty fuckin bad.

But guess what : thats still better conditions for life than Mars. And Mars is goddamn paradise compared to the other planets around us. Anything outside our immediate neighbourhood ? Forget it , they are ATLEAST thousands of years travel away, making moving anything of note there unfeasable. We ARE a one planet species. Get used to it , take good care of this one , its all we got.

Creationist Row: Inside A Creationist Museum

newtboy says...

You can't learn this level of stupid. It can only be achieved by generations of willful ignorance and inbreeding.

"Devoted to historical truth", while completely omitting any history or truth. Typical.

Creationists were so fond of saying 'where's the proof, the fossil record is not complete, so the theory of evolution is not complete, so it's wrong'....so where's the proof that humans and dinosaurs lived at the same time? There should be tons of human bones in coprolites with all the other bones, yet not a single example of a dinosaur eating a man has ever been found? Sounds like ridiculous bullshit by their own rules.

Extreme Weather and Climate Change: A Closer Look

wut the chicago cubs .....won

man the end of the world must be really coming.

I'm sick of the 'save our planet' crap...it's 'save our species'.
We think we are just luckier than the dinosaurs...it might be our time.

Sisyphus was a hermit crab...

vil says...

Crabs dont care. They lack the mechanism to understand their predicament. There is nothing inside a crab that could give informed consent.

Ducks are different, they might not be the cleverest dinosaur, but my guess is they would consciously avoid the slide if they had the choice. The crabs just apply chaos theory.

Informed consent in this case (the crab video) is the human consent that this is funny.

Bryce: Most humans like waterslides. Or pretend to like them (peer pressure). I hate waterslides. Unavoidable if you have kids though. All humans stop liking waterslides after a variable number of consecutive slides (in my case 0). Crabs dont care.

Big difference in informed consent.

Jurassic World, Jurassic Values

poolcleaner says...

Jurassic Park fans only give a fuck about the dinosaurs, okay? Check the discussions at IMDB. I don't think the average moviegoer understands the concepts of morality and heroic action -- and neither do your average filmmakers.

They wanna see references to previous movies in the franchise and then see people terrorized by fucking dinosaurs while the heroes escape the carnage and fight them like it's a video game. And yeah its important that hot people are in the movie and that they hook up.

The older brother's character shows young boys that there are plenty of fish in the sea so who cares about your nagging girlfriend, go out and get some. Time for love when you're in your 30s. Everything leading up to that is a vagina, boobs, and a mouth.

Jurassic Park, fuck yeah.

No Man's Sky Expectations Vs. Reality

Babymech says...

This video is the exact opposite of any problem with No Man's Sky. If the universe is hugely varied and procedurally generated, of course there will be a planet of fucked up steroid dinosaurs, and one with majestic brontosauruses, and one with sentient hydrogen, etc. This video makes you think that somewhere out there there is a planet that will be right for you, and gives you incentives to build the spaceship parts to get off the rock you're on and go in search of those perfect dinosaurs instead of staying with these freakish Belgian Blues.

There are valid criticisms against NMS, but this is more like a resounding endorsement of it.

Aliens: Are We Looking in the Wrong Place?

dannym3141 says...

Why does he say that we have a "high population of humans" on this planet compared to another populated planet, and therefore aliens will be larger than us? The guy knows we have one data point, so how is he able to establish our population size relative to an alien population? And why should they be larger than us - surely environment and social factors dictate this. For example Earth was home to dinosaurs (some of which were MUCH larger than us) and now it's home to humans? Furthermore, the size of the brain does not necessarily dictate how intelligent a being is, and with a greater body size it's more likely the being will have to spend more time gathering food and less time developing society. The larger the body, the less responsive the extremities become, the more energy and brainpower is required to regulate all of the body's functions?

But besides all of this, he actually opens the video by asking why we are looking for life like ours when life could be any kind of weird and wonderful thing. It could be made in a way that we had no idea could happen, in a place we thought incompatible with life. Why then are we to assume that larger aliens on smaller planets will be more intelligent? Or that the light from stars encourages growth? Why should alien creatures follow our social norms of gathering around popular landmarks - be they football teams or countries? Why are any of these human-based assumptions relevant when your argument is that they don't have to be like humans in any way?

At the end of the day, the best evidence we have about life indicates to us that it should be on an Earth-like planet. Why would we waste our limited time and resources looking elsewhere, especially when we have no idea what the evidence we're looking for might look like? This is a thoroughly uncompelling argument.
