American vs Delta near collision at JFK

eric3579 says...

- AAL106 first taxi clearance included runway 4L as departing runway (not in video)
-- Then told to cross 31L at K and continue on to 4L. (in video after the reference from the Captain).
-- When entering the runway 4L (about to cross 4L at J - diagram layover) they were told to stop several times on GND frequency (not in video)

What Do You Know About Female Anatomy

Why I Give Abortions

moonsammy says...

Really solid video. Abortion is a medical procedure which has to be available to those who need it. Until a pregnancy reaches the point of viability outside the parent, I don't see any room for debate as to whether abortion of that embryo / fetus should be legal, and entirely the choice of the pregnant person.

What *shouldn't* be legal is harassing anyone trying to access healthcare, in any context. But of course, there *isn't* any other context that I can think of where people are regularly harassed. I suppose it's been happening to some degree lately with vaccine stuff, but that's likely to be temporary (and the Venn diagram between anyone willing to harass people over vaccines and over abortions seems likely to have a LOT of overlap).

What Was Happening Before the Big Bang?

You should check out PBS Space Time on YouTube then

I love Brian; he is a pillar of the physics community. However, in the interest of time, he only got into Hawkin's shuttlecock interpretation.

There are others such Paul Steinhardt Eternal Inflation, and the universe being born out of black/white hole as described in the Penrose diagrams.

General relativity math is solid, but no one really knows how to interpret the singularity (if there is such a thing).

Totally agree.

This is extremely fascinating.

How Vintage Game Controllers Worked

Yanny or Laurel

Stormsinger says...

That "explained vid" pretty much lost my support when they tried to say those two diagrams were similar. Those two acoustic displays were about as dissimilar as they could get, and still represent single words.

Why California's Musical Road Sounds Terrible

ChaosEngine says...

I would have said this is why we build things off diagrams (plans, schematics, etc) rather than words.

I'm in the process of designing/building* a house and I very nearly made pretty much the exact same mistake (essentially assuming a 0 thickness of the walls).

* well, I am paying for other people to build it, but I am sending my very bad drawings to an architect who helpfully points out things like "the house will collapse if you remove that wall".

This is why engineers need to interface with somebody that straddles both worlds instead of talking directly to builders, customers, etc. Gotta have somebody that can properly translate nerd-speak into blue-collar / civilian.

How to Fix Traffic Forever

A divergent diamond intersection is less than half as expensive as a "traditional on-ramp intersection" ? How could that be if they are similarly equipped? Fake news? Up to (but not including) the "danger point diagram" this video seemed sane.

Inside View of Soyuz Crew Capsule From Undocking to Landing

Ashenkase says...

Diagram of re-entry for the Soyuz:
---------------------------------------------
http://spaceflight101.com/soyuz-tma-20m/wp-content/uploads/sites/77/2016/09/6618866_orig.jpg

Orbital Module:
---------------------
It houses all the equipment that will not be needed for reentry, such as experiments, cameras or cargo. The module also contains a toilet, docking avionics and communications gear. Internal volume is 6 m³, living space 5 m³. On the latest Soyuz versions (since Soyuz TM), a small window was introduced, providing the crew with a forward view.

Service Module:
---------------------
It has a pressurized container shaped like a bulging can that contains systems for temperature control, electric power supply, long-range radio communications, radio telemetry, and instruments for orientation and control. A non-pressurized part of the service module (Propulsion compartment, AO) contains the main engine and a liquid-fuelled propulsion system for maneuvering in orbit and initiating the descent back to Earth. The ship also has a system of low-thrust engines for orientation, attached to the Intermediate compartment. Outside the service module are the sensors for the orientation system and the solar array, which is oriented towards the sun by rotating the ship.

Consequences of bad jettisons:
------------------------------------------
The services modules are jettisoned before the spacecraft hits the atmosphere. A failure or partial jettison of the modules means that the capsule will not enter the atmosphere heat shield first which can lead to a number of scenarios:
- Capsule pushed off course (by hundreds of km)
- High sustained g-loads on reentry
- Plasma on reentry can burn through the craft if the heat shield is not exposed and oriented properly resulting in loss of crew.

Comcast Repairmen Unconcerned Of Wrecks They Are Causing

eric3579 says...

See (OSHA) Lane Closure on Low-Volume, Two-Lane Road (Part way down the page, eleventh diagram) https://www.osha.gov/doc/highway_workzones/mutcd/figures.html

Would be interesting to know legally whats required with these specific road condition also included (Weather and hill)

I just can't imagine they were following code in this situation. Accidents would be a common occurrence.

OSHA is now investigating.

The smart play would have a "men at work" sign at least at the crest of the hill, but if that's not in the regulations, that's not the unpleasant Comcast guy's responsibility.
