DUUDE I was checking my bank account, seeing I still don't have a deposit, read a news story about HnR Block customers being affected by some kind of mismanagement. It's probably nothing but we'll never know because ppl in charge of oversight have all been removed from their post.

BUT THEN I REMEMBERED!!! I know someone who HATES SOCIALISM and would absolutely despise the idea of everyone getting money for free. Dude, just message me and you can give me YOUR check.

That is...assuming you actually believe all the things you spout off about socialism, big government, and people getting money for free, and personal responsibility. LOOK MAN, i know you're a principled person, so you're looking to get rid of that money and want to return that check. Instead of that, get in touch with me, I'll eagerly await your reply because I could use the cash right now.

I really hope that you haven't been just shoveling piles of bullshit and are just saying things that you don't actually believe in. WHAT AM I SAYING, OF COURSE YOU WOULDNT JUST SAY ALL THOSE THINGS!!! I know you're a man of action and not just words. You say you hate socialism and people getting free money from big gov, so you'll happily hand it over.

Thanks man, I look forward to your contact about the money that you got that you don't want because you're not A FUCKING HYPOCRITE LYING PIECE OF SHIT WHO WILL TAKE IT WHEN IT'S COMING HIS WAY BUT DOESN'T WANT THE SAME HELP TO GO TO ANYONE ELSE.

Joe Biden - 17 Minutes Of Joe's Melting Brain

Is it just me or do conservatives even exist anymore? This isn't conservatism, this isn't fiscal responsibility.

I gotta tell you, it's just too ironic that about 3 weeks after my personal favorite candidate, Andrew Yang, got laughed out of the room for having the idea of a universal basic income. It's ironic that those same people who scoffed and treated it like an impossibility, "That will never work!!! It's socialism!!! It'll cost too much!!! Obviously he's a joke and not a good or real candidate. How insane he must be, handing out money to everyone, tisk tisk. IT'S SOCIALISM LIKE NAZIS FROTHfrothFROTHfrothFROTH THEY WANT TO MAKE US NAZIS BY GIVING US MONEY!!! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!"

===3 weeks later===

" We're sending everyone in America a check or direct deposit for $1,200 for individuals or $4,000 for a family of four. We think this plan is really a fantastic plan a great plan. This is the best thing we could do."

Batshit crazy Trump, after a few totally unhinged and embarrassing press conferences, this morning went on TV asking China, who he says is our enemy, to investigate Biden, his finances, and business dealings.
He claims Biden's son took $1.5 billion from China as a board member of an investment fund, but the facts are he wasn't even paid to be on the board, didn't own any of the fund until 2017, when he bought 10% for around $400000, making the total value of the fund $4 million, not $1.5 billion.....but Trump is incapable of not exaggerating monetary figures.
This makes 6 known instances of him asking foreign powers to interfere in the election by smearing his political opponents for his personal gain. You know....attempting illegal and illicit collusion.

I know, because Trump did it you're going to insist it's perfectly fine, legal, moral, ethical, and patriotic to do that.....

So......

What do you think about the Democratic candidates asking Merkel for Germany's help pressuring Deutsche bank to publicly release all Trump financial records, including taxes and records of exactly who has made major deposits to his accounts (hint, you don't want that info investigated)....to investigate the entire Trump family for unconstitutional corruption? You know, like sweetheart deals in China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia for Trump's children, who have actually made millions off the quid pro quo gifts they got from hostile foreign powers in exchange for arms deals, removing sanctions, recognizing Crimea as Russia, etc. from Trump. That would be fine too, right?

Could Earth's Heat Solve Our Energy Problems?

The 1mSv per year is the max the employees at the dump/recycling plant can be exposed to, so leeching more than that into public water systems seems impossible unless I'm missing something. This comes mainly from solid scale deposits removed from the closed loop systems.
Average employees in German plants seemed to get around 3 mSv/yr on their table.

At Fukushima, According to TEPCO records, the average workers’ effective dose over the first 19 months after the accident was about 12 mSv. About 35% of the workforce received total doses of more than 10 mSv over that period, while 0.7% of the workforce received doses of more than 100 mSv.
The 10mSv was the estimated average exposure for those who evacuated immediately, not the area. Because iodine 131 has a half life of 8 days, the local exposure levels dropped rapidly, but because caesium-137 has a half life of 30 years, contaminated areas will be "hot" for quite a while, and are still off limits as I understand it.

Sort of...., most of the area surrounding Chernobyl is just above background levels after major decontamination including removal of all soil, but many areas closer to the plant are still being measured at well above safe levels to this day, and unapproachable, while others may be visited only with monitoring equipment, dose meters, and only for short times. It's not back to background levels everywhere, with measurements up to 336uSv/hr recorded in enclosed areas and abandoned recovery equipment (the claw used to dig at the reactor for instance)....no where near that low at the plant itself. Places like the nearby cemetery which couldn't have the contamination removed still measure higher than maximum occupational limits for adults working with radioactive material. The radiation levels in the worst-hit areas of the reactor building, including the control room, have been estimated at 300Sv/hr, (300,000mSv/hr) providing a fatal dose in just over a minute.
http://www.chernobylgallery.com/chernobyl-disaster/radiation-levels/

Don't get me wrong, I support nuclear power. I just don't believe in pretending it's "safe". That's how Chernobyl happened....overconfidence and irresponsibility. If we consider it unacceptably disastrous if it goes wrong, we might design plants that can't go wrong...The tech exists.

Geothermal try to keep public exposure to less than 1 mSv per year.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/283106142_Natural_radionuclides_in_deep_geothermal_heat_and_power_plants_of_Germany

Living near a Nuclear Power station will get you about 0.00009 mSv/year.

Living in Fukushima will get you about 10 mSv in a lifetime, with life expectancy there at about 84 years that is 0.177 mSv/year.

https://www.who.int/ionizing_radiation/a_e/fukushima/faqs-fukushima/en/

Even Chernobyl is almost entirely background radiation now. Radiation is all scaremongering and misinformation these days, so people freak out about it but it really isn't that dangerous. It takes about 100 mSv a year to have even the slightest statistically detectable health effect and far more than that to actually kill someone.

OLD MAN TELLS FUNNIEST JOKE EVER!

lucky760 says...

@KirbyToekit Exactly what I was thinking.

Couldn't really enjoy the joke because it's based too far outside reality. Firstly, I've had IRS problems and they don't just see you making large deposits then contact you and make you explain. That's nonsense. And secondly, the IRS agent making large-sum bets is a step too far-fetched for me.

The World Is Slowly Running Out Of Sand

Seriously? Beach sand has been moving since day one. It leaves the beaches by the water, it gets deposited by the water. The Core of Engineers is just trying to control that cycle. No construction companies are pulling sand from Miami Beach. #Fakenews

3D Printing Stainless Steel with Giant Robot Arms

newtboy says...

Flux core would remove any slight oxidation between deposits on a continuous weld, or a media blast nozzle in front of the weld zone.
I agree with you if they intend to use it for load bearing structures, but it wouldn't be difficult. Just a loose seal around the work area and positive gas flow keeping oxygen out, problem solved.
The downside I see is cost. It's expensive to 'make metal' with a mig....or any welder. Electrodes/wire aren't cheap, and then there's the electricity. Bending or milling sheets, castings, or blocks is almost always going to be cheaper. This will be useful for designs that require complex interior shapes impossible to do conventionally, but not much else, imo.

Payback said:

There has to be a downside to weld-additive construction. They'd have to do this in a vacuum or inert gas filled chamber to avoid oxidisation between layers.

I know you can't weld aluminium like this. Aluminium Oxide has a much higher melting point than aluminium, which is the main point of failure with aluminium welding.

All of the progress that's been made on so many fronts, decades long uphill battles in many cases ... soon to be gone or in serious jeopardy. One can *hope* that the myriad of impending lawsuits, the depositions etc. etc. against this acid tongued, classless carnival barker will have an impact of some import ... not that Pence would be any kind of prize in my mind either [sigh]. I am deeply embarrassed and ashamed for our Nation. Those who would compromise their morals and values to cast a vote in support of this man/child for *any reason* speaks volumes as to their lack of character and conviction. Never underestimate the power and sheer magnitude of the easily duped. Color me incredulous and sincerely grieving for future generations

Michael Moore perfectly encapsulated why Trump won

newtboy says...

If only I agreed with you....but sadly these things are NOT off the table, clearly. In fact, it's the minority rights being infringed upon that may have determined this election, so to say they are settled is simply wrong.
They SHOULD be settled, and among educated people they are, but the state of education in this country is pretty sad, as you can see from the results of this election. Trump won among the uneducated, and they are the majority.

What should terrify people is a statement he made last week, that" won't it be great when we are one nation, under ONE god", implying he plans on somehow making us monotheistic as a nation.

The electoral college is set up for EXACTLY this eventuality....that a smarmy snake oil salesman might dupe the uneducated masses into electing someone dangerous, so we are supposed to have a firewall of educated thinkers that, no matter what the vote, can elect any candidate they wish. Unfortunately, they have never done that, and now seem to have forgotten that elections like this are the sole reason we have an electoral college, not a direct democracy.

I wonder what happens when Trump gives his deposition about raping the 13 year old girl in the early 90's in December....if he admits to raping her, or is found to be guilty of it, does he still get sworn in, or do we have President Pierce? Can someone please accuse him of multiple felonies and get him convicted quickly? That seems to be our only hope, and President Pierce doesn't sound much better...only slightly more sane.

Women's rights, minority rights, LGBTQ rights, climate change... these things are not up for discussion or compromise. They are done, settled and off the fucking table. If you have a problem with that, you're wrong.

And while I'm no fan of religion, I'm even less of a fan of the idea of discriminating against people based solely on their religion. (Religion is not an excuse either; if someone does something stupid and/or evil in the name of your religion, it doesn't get you a free pass, but that's another story).

Bottom line: this isn't some "we're all the same deep down scenario".

If this year has shown anything, it's that we need protection from idiots being allowed to vote.

Why Home Ownership is Actually a Terrible Investment

ChaosEngine says...

House prices in major cities are a huge problem, undoubtedly.

But I see that as orthogonal to whether buying a house is a smart decision or not.

Obviously, if you can't afford the deposit, then buying is really an option (and don't get me wrong, that sucks, and we NEED to do something about that), but this video appears to be aimed at people who COULD buy a home.

Jinx said:

Dunno. Rent here is just as exorbitant as house prices. And yeah, the deposit is usually the major block for new buyers - if you can afford to rent where you want to buy chances are you can afford the mortgage repayments. If you don't have the bank of mum and dad backing you, goooooood fucking luck.

Ya, totally depends on where you live. In most big cities buying a home is just too expensive and it's FAR cheaper to rent. Where I live an average tiny/crappy detached house is about 1.2 million $. So the down-payment alone would be more than a house would cost in a small town.

Why Home Ownership is Actually a Terrible Investment

RFlagg says...

Locally, it is generally cheaper to buy than rent... you need the deposit and all that of course, but the per month costs, even after insurance, property taxes and mortgage still end up cheaper. Now other expenses such as upkeep, utilities and the like may go up, but given you can get into a super nice home in a good school district and good neighborhood, for well under $150k (under $100k and even under $50k for less good areas) and rent is still in the $450-500 for smaller apartments... ownership appears to be the better idea. More space, for less money. When I had a house, I went from a small one bedroom apartment to a 3 bedroom house, 2 stories, walk up attic, basement (minor leaks)... saved a bundle per month, though gas ended up being ultra high, and job changes caused me to lose it eventually. Still, it was per month cheaper.

Heck, I know somebody, not local, but in Pittsburgh who moved from an apartment to owning a condo, and even after mortgage, association fees and utilities, it all comes out cheaper than her rent was alone before utilities, and the places are the same size (if not a bit bigger at the condo)... and that is still in the much coveted North Allegheny school district . Obviously homes and the like there are much more expensive than where I live, but still, seems cheaper to own than to buy for equal square feet even out there.
