What if We Nuke a City?

vil says...

Lets get all countries to organize their institutions in such a way that idealistic moral imperatives and vows are binding. No cheating, not even lying. Ever. Yes you too, Saddam. And Vladimir. And Pooh too. I mean Xi Jinping. I am sure if we ask them all nicely or sign a petition or demonstrate in front of the Indian and Pakistani embassies 24/7 surely they will come around.

If we disarm now, how do we divert that asteroid when we need to?

No Biden corruption...only Trump collusion.

There was no prosecution or investigation at the time Joe Biden, with full American, international, and Ukrainian backing, pushed to have them remove a corrupt prosecutor who refused to prosecute corruption. The investigation of the company his son had worked for was closed, finding zero wrongdoing, long before Joe pushed them to remove an internationally recognized corrupt prosecutor. Every part of the story Trump told you, besides the location, is demonstrably, obviously, factually wrong. It's a pure Trump lie.
Most of the republicans repeating his lies know that for a fact, having been witness to what actually happened, the rest are willfully ignorant, refusing to look into it because they KNOW Trump is lying to them but don't want to admit it to themselves or you.

Trump's administration is by far the most corrupt in modern history, with more convictions, more forced out of office for malfeasance, more dishonesty and outright lies to the press, the American people, congress, the supreme court, international leaders, etc. There's no one they haven't lied to, and they go on tv and say they're justified lying to everyone, they have no obligation to tell the truth unless they're under oath, but even then they lie constantly....and get caught because they're stupid and dumb.

Really?! What evidence can you point to that isn't Trump's flapping gums? None. This conspiracy theory was also investigated and found to be as truthful as the pizza pedophile ring Clinton led from a pizza place's basement that didn't exist.

That's exactly what Trump says, the president can't be prosecuted or investigated, and anyone who does investigate him is a traitor who should face a firing squad, not Democrats or independents.
That's why more than 1/2 of registered voters think we know enough already to remove him, and 20-30% more think he should be removed if the charges are true, and the white house admitted they are true and offered written proof themselves, so dumb they thought it would exonerate him. *facepalm.
We're saying if you are so demented you make up insane self serving stories in your head like Biden stopped a prosecution, then you act as if they're factual, you should be removed from office for dementia, as should anyone who repeats your lies.

Now, if we're worried an administration may have abused their power to enrich their family, we should look at the king of nepotism, the Trumps, who do private business with countries we aren't aligned with and OBVIOUSLY, UNAMBIGUOUSLY get special favors and do nothing jobs that pay millions....Ivanka's trademarks in China for instance, bought with state promises by the president.

If Obama had had his personal attorneys skip around the globe pressuring foreign leaders to hurt his political opponents, withholding approved aid until they agree to help him personally, you would have lost your shit so thoroughly you could replace your home toilet with a urinal. There's zero question Trump has done this, he and Giuliani both have admitted it and there's evidence that, for once, they're telling the truth, too dumb to know collusion is wrong, too dumb to know admitting to extortion makes them suspects.

Not relevant. Trump is finding out Biden's corruption in Ukraine Trump did run on cleaning the swamp.

Also Ukraine help DNC gather dirt on Trump for 2016 election.

So you saying if I rob a bank and then run for POTUS you can't investigate?

Grreta Thunberg's Speech to World Leaders at UN

@newtboy,
" Sane policy makers DO assume the absolute worst modeled outcome"

Here we disagree. When you have a high degree of unknowns in your modelling, you don't always just go off the worst case. Let me argue from the extreme to demonstrate that in principle.

If we are looking to mitigate the risk of an extinction level asteroid strike, we don't solely look at the worst case. The worst case is at a minimum assuming another KT extinction level asteroid out there on it's way to us. Space is big enough that it's still possible one is out there undetected on it's way here in our lifetimes. The probability of that may be low, but it's still a worst case not impossible outcome.

With that known worst case, should we bankrupt the global economy building either a defensive capability to detect and destroy/redirect it, or the capability to abandon the planet in our lifetimes because of this worst case risk?

The answer to me is of course not, you must ALSO take into account other variables like the probability of it happening, the unknowns in the equation that prevent us picturing the problem with full accuracy, and other factors.

Multi-Agent Hide and Seek

bremnet says...

Another entrant in the incredibly long line of adaptation / adaptive learning / intelligent systems / artificial intelligence demonstrations that aren't. The agents act based on a set of rules / freedoms/constraints prescribed by a human. The agents "learn" based on the objective functions defined by the human. With enough iterations (how many times did the narrator say "millions" in the video) . Sure, it is a good demonstration of how adaptive learning works, but the hype-fog is getting a big thick and sickening folks. This is a very complex optimization problem being solved with impressive and current technologies, but it is certainly not behavioural intelligence.

Sigh, no. All but the most extreme end of the most pessimistic projections are for under 3ft by 2100. That is the science.

Each of your earlier claims can be demonstrated to be equally contrary to actual scientific expectation. Regrettably, your content to refute the IPCC with a link to a Forbes article...

Its a waste of my time to point out the science if you aren’t willing to. I’m out.

Shepard Smith: Yet again in America

Stormsinger says...

Well, until just recently, the NRA had a few million utter fanatics they could mobilize to punish those who displeased them. And it's not like the GOP has demonstrated any actual backbone in the last few decades.

We'll see if the NRA's current meltdown changes things in the next year or two...I suspect it might well do so.

cloudballoon said:

Why is the Republican party so afraid of the NRA? How much money can they donate and lobby? Why can't the anti-gun side mobilize and match the donation like 2~3 folds and dangle the money to the GOP to silence the NRA? Of course it's a gross oversimplification of the issues (NRA can go "mental" and threaten any Republican's families, etc. if I go all cynical), but money is a good start...

Ban assault rifle, raise the price of guns. the manufacturers still make as much money.

Amendment right? Well what about my right to own a nuclear baseball? Anthrax and Agent Orange? It isn't it my right to have them? Stop with the BS amendment right argument.

370 Federal Prosecutors Would Indict Trump For Felonies

cloudballoon says...

I consider the Dems as criminals... in not impeaching Trump. There's a point where impeachment is no longer a political "calculation" (even if you think it is one) but a defense mechanism for democracy and justice. Evidence demonstrate we're long past that point.

It's not like taking down Trump the USA will not have a POTUS... you'll have the VP as immediate replacement. As much a delusional self-righteous lame-ass Pence is, the Right can at least salvage what little dignity remained by not having a chaotic egomaniac to lead them. That's a win for the Republicans no?

Lethal Injections: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Watched a video made by Exit International, the lady demonstrating the use of the kit did it with the demeanor of an airline stewardess demonstrating the safety features on an airplane. Pretty surreal.

newtboy said:

That's crazy. Anyone selling one that's used for it's designed purpose would be guilty of assisting suicide both criminally and civilly. Besides, who needs a kit to get a plastic bag, rubber band, and short hose?

That said, two tanks does seem like overkill in that situation....but then again, why be frugal at that point? If I was going to gas myself, I would rather use acetylene....go out with a bang!

Seems light.
But I guess they had to go with the demonstrably false, as well as ignoring the gibberish where you're pretty sure you know what he's trying to say, but it might just be nonsense.

Prove Apple wrong about data recovery and get banned

Jinx says...

She posted a video demonstrating the kinds of comments she was posting, which were then promptly deleted. As far as I could tell there was nothing in them to warrant their deletion except the suggestion that data may be recoverable - which apparently Apple thinks is bogus advice.

re. Encryption - as far as I am aware she repairs the phones enough for them to turn on, the phone's owner still has to unlock it they want their things back. There are also some components which have some sort of hardcoded serial number, and cannot be replaced, but apparently enough of the parts can be interchanged that it isn't usually a problem.

Breaking the toilet in front of the pooch made me grit my teeth as well. That were dumb.

I don't think there should be an onus on Apple to repair instead of replace, but they could cooperate a little (or a lot) better with those businesses that are willing to offer that service. At the very least they should cease misleading their customers and stop removing perfectly legitimate advice.

Anthony Jeselnik: Thoughts and Prayers

cloudballoon says...

Oh the irony...

I'm a Christian, and I hate those people that only offers "thoughts & prayers" to steal the spotlight as much as the next guy. The arguments I get into with my fellow Christians about the danger of passivity is intense, you just don't know about it.

Comedy by mocking people is one thing, as the targets so often do deserve scorns. But not offering any solutions or demonstrably doing anything more than mocking others, thus not making the world better is also "less than nothing."

BACON CAUSES CANCER!!!! MCDONALDS IS GIVING FREE CANCER!

transmorpher says...

Allow me to demonstrate your bias in this situation.

Q: if instead of bacon, what if they had 800 studies showing that, say, carrots cause cancer. Would you be arguing about the stats, or would you stop eating carrots?

I'm pretty sure you'd stop eating carrots. But because you enjoy bacon so much, it's having a impact on your reasoning. That is your bias.

I can prove this further by asking you what it would take to make you give up bacon. And I'm quite sure you would say nothing. Perhaps short of some instant effect, I know you would never stop eating it, no matter strong the evidence. In fact many people don't. They rather go blind and hav their legs amputated from preventable diabetes than give up their instant comfort foods. They are so biased they lose their own limbs, and still refuse to accept the reality.

You also you like to claim that me being vegan makes me biased. But the truth is that the Science made me vegan. And not the other way around. The reduction of animal cruelty is just a bonus.

newtboy said:

It's not time you lack, I got an A in statistics which I took after advanced placement B/C calculus, thank you.
Please stop hyper exaggerating the danger of all animal products and the benefits of veganism.

No, we're acting like +1% lifetime risk of one type of cancer, from 5%-6%, is a totally acceptable level of risk to trade for a lifetime of pleasure when taken knowingly, and is a far cry from +18% every time you eat bacon. It's probably far less than the additional risk of drinking municipal water, or breathing anywhere East of the West coast, certainly exponentially less than breathing air in any major metropolitan area, or living within 25 miles of a military base or airport.

I'm also acting like people who lie about or misrepresent the stats only prove their position is untenable and that they're untrustworthy. If 1% total increased lifetime risk is enough to make your point, why erroneously claim +18% per serving? It makes it so easy to dismiss and overlook any real point you might have had.

Nothing is unanimous, and that goes double for nutritional advice. Somewhere there's a doctor that insists you can't possibly get enough nitrates, most would say if you're healthy go ahead and have some bacon...in moderation. My doctor and numerous documentaries say the stress of worrying incessantly about every little risk factor is a much bigger risk factor than almost any other for innumerable disorders and diseases. I'll take his advice, thanks.
