New Rule: I, Q | Real Time with Bill Maher

StukaFox says...

Let me get this straight -- some guy trolled 4chan's /pol/ with the most improbable story since that one about a loving god watching over all of us, and Trump supporters sucked it down like it was so many gouts of hot Russian jizz?

I'll answer my own question: yes.

An internet troll on a 4chan -- the site dedicated to stale memes, cam-whoring and Zootopia porn (not that I'd know anything about the latter) -- triggered the stumbling, bumbling collection of idiots who attend Trump rallies like the mouth-breather's version of Triumph of the Will into believing they were the recipients of ULTRA-TOP-SECRET information. Now these people believe they're a movement, and they're going to vote (and hopefully stop there before gunfire is involved) based on this delusion.

Didn't we used to point and laugh at people for shit like this?

What they don't know (muh-ha-ha!) is that this is actually a scheme to identify potential candidates for a new reality show called 'Gullible Island', which will be a cross between Lord of the Flies and Idiocracy. Contestants will be fed a constant stream of conspiracy theories ("Democrats don't want you to know that cyanide is tasty") and then left to their own devices -- at which point the rest of us will turn off the TV and breathe a huge sigh of relief while await Trump 2020: 20 years for treason and 20 years for collusion.

But Intelligent People Believe in God...

entr0py says...

People use the word "Atheist" to mean a couple of different things, you guys are describing the two meanings correctly. It's just genuinely a muddy term because usage is so split. Richard Dawkins has a handy disambiguation in the God Delusion.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectrum_of_theistic_probability

Honestly I think "strong atheists" are mostly just a straw man created so believers can say "look, these atheists are just as unreasonable as us!". But I guess a few real ones exist.

Well, things are not as rosy as folks like Steven Pinker would like us to believe. As much as I dislike resorting to Hollywood for philosophical insights, True Detective was absolutely on point in this quote:

„Transference of fear and self-loathing to an authoritarian vessel. It's catharsis. He absorbs their dread with his narrative. Because of this, he's effective in proportion to the amount of certainty he can project.“

Now, they were talking about a preacher. But I'd argue this applies to scapegoats as well. And if your arguments undermine the scapegoat, it starts losing its efficiency as a focal point of people's discontent.

Most of us have so much day-to-day shit to deal with that outsourcing the macro-shit to a boogeyman, any boogeyman, helps us get through the day without wanting to bash our head against the wall. Or bash someone else's head in, for that matter.

This doesn't excuse this level of self-delusion, but maybe it explains it to some degree. I'd say keep doing what I know you've been doing for many years: present your case in a respectful manner.

Comparison of Trump and Obama Responding to School Shootings

newtboy says...

Jesus Christ, Bob, you have lost your mind.
The delusion is strong with this one.
CLINTON worked with Russia to rig an election FOR TRUMP? You're the first person I've heard claim they helped her....because that's just bat shit insanity and contrary to 100% of our intelligence agencies assessments.

What treason? I'll stick to just this weeks current ongoing treason, not doing a thing to safeguard our next election from known Russian interference, contrary to his oath of office and treasonous.

What happened to Trump only gets praise from his own Twitter? Dropped that insanity like red hot steel, didn't ya?

bobknight33 said:

What treason?

Hillary colluding with Russians to rig an election (and still lost).

Obama is on of the worst presidents in history..

Trump is far better than a questionable American community agitator.

Vox S1E24: The awkward debate around Trump's mental fitness

Jinx says...

Eh... he could get diagnosed with almost any disorder you can name and his base would still all be like "he my kinda crazy". Wonder if there is a diagnosis for that sort of delusion.

Rubio VS Comey: The altimate summary to Comeys testimony.

Drachen_Jager says...

I think by "altimate" what @bobknight33 really meant to say is "alt-right" - AKA the bullshit propaganda he sees on Alex Jones etc.

I like how, massive scandal, obstruction of justice, possible treason, like god-damnit, it's possible that people at the highest levels committed outright TREASON and Bob's worried about semantics. Where was your sense of moderation for Obama, Bob? You were ready to hang him for enjoying spicy mustard (I know, that's so much more un-American than selling your soul and country to the Russians so they can bail-out your bankrupt ass like Trump, right?

So, I'll stop asking if you're getting tired of winning. Joke's growing old. Instead, I'll ask. Do you think this is winning? Do you think America is winning under Trump? Do you think Trump is winning? Do you think Trump makes your life better and Obama made your life worse?

I'm just curious to gauge the level of your delusion here, but I'd genuinely love to hear your answers. Not that I think you're brave enough to admit the truth, but it would be nice to get it from you at least once.

New Rule: Trump and the Long Con

mentality says...

Bob is well versed in hypocrisy and self delusion. Otherwise, why would someone who claims to follow Christ's teachings vote for policy that makes the rich richer and fucks over the poor? Once you can lie about your own beliefs and live with yourself as a fake Christian, lying about how Trump is doing should be a piece of cake.

newtboy said:

It makes one wonder....what's @bobknight33 s take on this weeks total failure of another of Trump's main campaign promises, immediate repeal and replacement of the ACA, even though Republicans have full control of congress and enough votes to do what they like?

Alex Jones is definitely not bragging

newtboy says...

1:40. He says the only true statement in the entire montage.

Terrifyingly, this man is 1/3 of where Trump gets his "information", and the other 2/3 often quote him as a reputable source.
The inmates are running the asylum and they've ordered 300000000 straight jackets for the "crazy" people that dare to disagree with their paranoid delusions.

Why I Left the Left

coolhund says...

Funny thing is the old left is acting that extreme and downright lunatic, that the new right and new left are finding a lot of common ground now.

In Germany for example you can see that on Die Linke, a pure left party (links means left in German), which is actually well established. They are now suddenly talking about things that only the right wing would have talked about, so much that a new right wing party already offered some of them to join their party. Sure, they still have a lot of the old leftists among them who just keep raving in their delusions, but they are realizing reality and are leaning more and more to a policy of reality.

I said that before, if you act like extremists, you will lose the moderates and people who can still think for themselves, and thats exactly whats happening now. I considered myself more of a leftist than right winger too until a few months ago actually. Now, I would never go that far, because I know with what lunacy, hypocrisy I would be identified with. And that is actually making me mad, because there were a lot ideas from the left, that now have lost most of their credibility, throwing us all back decades, or more.

President Donald Trump's Base Deluded By False Facts

vil says...

I dont watch her often at all and can not say i dislike her. But this one clip is really bad IMHO and the previous one on the sift was not very good either. She picks a good topic and more or less has a good angle on it but the form is basically what RT or FOX do - the school bully approach.

The numbers up to that 9:00 mark do not support the hysterical talk. They are what they are. The questions are bad, answers irrelevant. Then we get the delusion confirmation, which is the best bit, and she sees it out more or less OK. But the first 9 minutes is either badly prepared or badly executed IMHO. The first minute is pure WTF bad.

I tried watching from just before the 9 minute mark and upvoted the video for its last 3 minutes.

Bill Nye tours the Ark Encounter

Jinx says...

tbh, as much as a I think you put it very eloquently, the response will still be "but why does it matter".

It is interesting that Ken Ham apparently can't begin to face the possibility that he might not exist for eternity. I mean really, surely here is a man who believes in God because the idea of an end is too terrifying and inconceivable. On some level I wonder if he doesn't know that his feeling is irrelevant to the reality. How fitting then that he resides in a museum of deception and delusion.

drradon said:

Interesting that a fundamentalist Christian is arguing a completely nihilist position. Nye could have done much better in responding to him: that we have a moral obligation to future generations to enable the species to continue to evolve and survive indefinitely. A scientific treatment of global climate change can provide us direction in how to ameliorate adverse changes that current and prior generations have created, whereas the "Christian" position, that global climate change is the result of sins by our current culture, doesn't lead to an effective strategy to ensure survival of the species.

GUARDIANS Final TRAILER (2017) - Russian Superhero Movie

kceaton1 jokingly says...

So it has Susan Storm and the Winter Soldier, but who are the other two guys, any clue? Plus when did Putin start to look so ugly and get electric superpowers.

Why would Stark, after making Ultron (even though it REALLY should have been Dr. Pym, the guy that creates "Ant-Man", who should've made Ultron) dare to do such a dumb thing by implanting an energy device, especially if it causes psychopathy--with possible delusions--on top of Putin's pre-existing sociopathy (with skin mutilations and a type of really bad acne) and also make him mortally pissed off at bears instead of his natural Gaelic love for them. As we all know, Putin LOVES to ride on top of bears with his shirt off all the time (especially if he can have a gun and a bottle of vodka/whiskey too)?!?

We'll just have to wait and see if this movie (and its trailer) can reach past its natural B-Movie hopes and dreams.

New Metallica song - Moth into flame

eric3579 says...

Blacked out
Pop queen, amphetamine
The screams crashed into silence

Tapped out
Doused in the gasoline
The high times going timeless

Decadence
Death of the innocence
The pathway starts to spiral

Infamy
All for publicity
Destruction going viral

Light it up
Ah, light it up
Another hit erases all the pain
Bulletproof
Ah, kill the truth
You’re falling, but you think you’re flying high
High again

Sold your soul
Built a higher wall
Yesterday
Now you’re thrown away

Same rise and fall
Who cares at all?
Seduced by fame
A moth into the flame

Twisted
Backstabbing wicked
The delusion absolution

Perjurer
Fame is the murderer
Seduce you into ruin

Light it up
Ah, light it up
Another hit erases all the pain
Bulletproof
Ah, tell the truth
You’re falling, but you think you’re flying high
High again

Sold your soul
Built the higher wall
Yesterday
Now you’re thrown away

Same rise and fall
Who cares at all?
Seduced by fame
A moth into the flame
Burn

Guarantee your name, you go and kill yourself
The vultures feast around you still
Overdose on shame and insecurity
If one won’t do that fistful will

Death scene
Black hearse the limousine
A grave filled with seduction

Vaccine
Fame does the murdering
She builds up for destruction

So light it up
Ah, light it up
Another hit erases all the pain
Bulletproof
Ah, no excuse
You’re falling, but you think you’re flying high
High again

Sold your soul
Built the higher wall
Yesterday
Now you’re thrown away

Same rise and fall
Who cares at all?
Seduced by fame
A moth into the flame

Addicted to the

RetroReport - Nuclear Winter

Buttle says...

It became obvious that the calculations supporting the idea of nuclear winter were fudged. Same with climate change -- I'm not saying that it does not exist, just that there is a strong and pervasive incentive to maximize hysteria without regard to science or facts, which leads, eventually, to climate fatigue.

Climate change will be remembered as one of the more striking popular delusions or madnesses of crowds.

Mordhaus said:

Well, it's not an exact comparison. You see, for us to say climate change is being oversold like nuclear winter, we would have to use the analogy that every year nuclear powers were setting off X number of nuclear weapons and slowly bringing about nuclear winter.

Because that is what we are doing with climate change; we are slowly actually bringing it about, where nuclear winter never happened because we never launched nukes.
