Passionate Sign Language Interpreter At Slayer Show

Journalist gets fed up w/ Piers Morgan, calls him an idiot

newtboy says...

Another deaf moron who's ears don't work when his lips move, which is constantly, but he might still be the best listener at Fox....but realize that bar rests so low it's somewhere within the iron core of our planet.
Like the rest of the right, they invite other opinions to speak not in order to listen, but solely for the opportunity to talk over them smugly and create red herrings by not paying attention and making up claims about what the other said or believes out of thin air.
I sometimes hope Trump can enact some truth in journalism law like he says he wants but with a real, unbiased referee deciding what's proven fact and what's ignorant opinion masquerading as fact, and public consequences for the networks at the very least amounting to unimpeachable fact checking, because that will end right wing media outlets day one. They all do this, rant loudly over guests they don't agree with, because their arguments can't withstand honest debate with knowledgeable people, so those people can't be allowed to be heard by their audience.
Why they still give Faux those opportunities is beyond me, Faux must pay lefties a mint to come on.

New Rule: The Good Sex Economy

It's survivable for those who survive...plenty do not.

While the statement may be true at the national level, it's completely heartless and tone-deaf, worthy of a GOP mouthpiece.

KVUE Austin TX Closed Caption labels Child Victim as Monkey

Sagemind says...

As someone with a deaf person in the family, I've watched a lot of Closed caption TV. I also have someone in my family who types translation for Medical Transcription who types reports in real time. An amazing feat, typing 120 words per minute.

Some text is Pre-typed like in TV shows and Movies.
Some text is Auto typed by a computer
And some text is physically being typed by someone live in real time.

You can usually tell if it's typed in real time, because they can be running one or two sentences behind as they try to keep up. It's a very unforgiving medium. Once typed it's broadcasted. You can't just go back in time and remove it. A lot of this typing uses Auto-complete on typing words to speed up the typist to keep the typing in line with the audio.
This is most likely what happened in this case, as the Auto completion incorrectly chose the wrong word.

Don't read into things more than what's there. If you've watched as much closed caption as I have, you'd know that mistakes happen constantly, especially on live broadcast news stories. This is one example out of maybe 20-30 mistakes that will come up in an hour of time.

Response to Trump's Video Game Montage - #GameOn

ChaosEngine says...

I'm glad they went this route.

There's a certain attitude that says that only cute, indie games about children with big heads lost in a scary world can be art (shamelessly stole that from Zero Punctuation), but big-budget action games are disposable nonsense.

And there certainly ARE plenty of good, clever, indie games and insanely dumb, tone-deaf, "press f to pay respects" AAA games.

But you can have violence be a part of your story and still be a good story. Hell, your story can be about violence and what it does to you. Spec Ops: The Line is a great example of this.

It's disingenuous to say that video games are nothing but sadistic murder simulators, but it would be equally disingenuous to pretend they're all sweetness and light.

The first God of War is as brutal and sadistic as they come and it's a great game. "Hatred" sets out to be the most brutal and sadistic game ever but it's terrible.

newtboy said:

Ok, it just seemed odd in a video responding to Trump's m rated game video. It made sense to me to counter that with a g rated game video with no violence at all. Granted, this is more honest in it's depiction of games in general, but doesn't juxtapose as strongly.

Patrick Stewart Looks Further Into His Dad's Shell Shock

MilkmanDan says...

@noims -- My grandfather had about 10 war stories that he rotated through telling, pretty much exclusively after one of my uncles "broke the dam" by asking him to recall things as they were at the Oshkosh air show standing next to a P-47 airplane like he had worked on.

By the time that happened, my grandfather was in his 80's and in very good physical and mental shape (cattle rancher that did daily work manhandling heavy feed bags around, etc.) but had a quirky personality because he was 90%+ deaf. I don't think that was a result of the war, hearing problems seem to run in the family.

Anyway, he frequently used those hearing problems as an excuse for not having to interact with people. He had hearing aids, but he'd turn them off most of the time and just ignore people. I think some of that was being an introvert, and some was probably lingering "shell shock" / PTSD effects. But overall he really adjusted back to civilian life just fine. Got a degree in education on the GI Bill and taught and coached basketball to High School students, then worked as a small-town Postmaster, and eventually retired to work the ranch. I don't think any of us in his family, including his wife and children, thought of him as being "impaired" by the mental effects of the war. But it was clear that some of what he experienced had a very deep, lifelong effect on his outlook.

I wrote out the 3 stories of his above because they seemed to be the ones that had the most emotional impact on him. To me, it was interesting that a lot of stuff outside of combat hit him the hardest. He also had more traditional "war stories" stuff about victories and bravery, like when his unit captured / accepted the surrender of a young German pilot in a Bf-109 who deserted to avoid near certain death from flying too many missions after the handwriting was on the wall that the allies were going to win. But by far, he got more choked up about the other stuff like having to knock that French girl off her bike and seeing starving civilians and being unable to help them much.

Like you said, more banal stuff side-by-side with or against a backdrop of horror. I think it's pretty much impossible to imagine what those sorts of experiences in war are really like and what being in those situations would do to us mentally. And then WW2 in particular just had a massive impact on the entire generation. Basically everybody back home knew multiple people that went away and never came back. Then when some did come back, they were clearly different and yet reluctant to talk about what happened. Pretty messed up time to live through, I guess.

Antifa Violence Finally Called Out by Media

newtboy says...

Trump qualified his extremely late condemnation of Nazis. My condemnation of antifa is without hesitation (called them thugs day one in Berkeley with Milo), reservation or qualification.

Trump accepted Duke's support for months before being forced to weakly say ' ok, I denounce him, ok?' and his platform essentially was a Duke wet dream.
The left denounces antifa unreservedly and constantly (to your deaf ears) .

I'm not the media, don't put their alleged words in my mouth. I clearly gave the right/republicans credit for finally saying they don't stand with Nazis and don't want their vote...a few weeks ago. Too bad Trump can't follow suit and denounce them without qualification or spreading blame....but he seems incapable of that when it comes to Nazis and racists...but not when it comes to Muslims or Mexicans.

...."Bob ignores that because he cannot accept or understand that someone left of him isn't actually in antifa, so clearly we must all be supporters of the group we call fascist criminal morons...."

You know Trump denounces all Violence in Charlottesville and he is labeled as a NAZI lover for not just condemning the Nazi there.

David Duke and the klan put their support towards Trump and the left / you promote Trump a klan lover.

Then the leftest media / ANTIFA BLM all push the noise that IF trump is a NAZI lover then his supporters are NAZI lovers.

The pot is calling the kettle black.

Antifa Violence Finally Called Out by Media

newtboy says...

I try to not speak about things I don't know about.
I try to avoid "news" like this that's so clearly biased, on any 'side'. They tend to skew and ignore facts to make a political point. A good test is if they can't refrain from childlike name calling.

I can't speak for down under, here, we see "both" sides (and I still strongly deny that the antifa people are really on the left, because fascism is not a politically left philosophy, and they are fascists) acting outrageously.

EDIT:That said, only one group has actually killed so far, and only one group has fired guns into crowds of women and children so far, and that side stands firmly with the right, and the right has so far stood with them, calling them peaceful protesters that only defended themselves from antifa. I have yet to hear of a single democratic representative say antifa are good people, or peaceful protesters, the right however has made that a mantra about the alt right, Nazis and KKK.

Hmmmm...I had to look up Sargon....you've got to be kidding...he's slightly LEFT OF CENTER?!? You are absolutely bat shit nuts. He's clearly, firmly far right. It didn't take me 5 minutes to be sure.
HAHAHA!!!! You start by giving me credit for watching it, then berate me for not watching it. I gave it a total fair hearing, and it took no time at all for it to show it's colors as totally hyper biased far right Nazi apologist bullshit.

Again, only the right wing media is claiming that main stream media is hiding antifa criminality. It's clearly being shown here, and they are called out for the violent idiots they are constantly, but if the right acknowledged that, they might have to deal with the Nazis and KKK and alt right on their 'side' (and sadly, they can't denounce them as easily since they clearly courted them in the election, unlike the left and antifa)
I have absolutely zero need to watch such tripe to be informed. Here, coverage isn't one sided, no matter what Bob and Hannity tell you.

I have no doubt that my arguments fall on deaf ears with Bob, but I can give other readers another rational point of view, denounce debunked fabrications, point out information that's intentionally omitted, and point them towards verifiable sources rather than opinion pieces masquerading as news. They are the minds I hope to reach, Bob's is closed, as, I'm starting to think, is yours.

Asmo said:

Yay, at least you bothered to watch the video.

And yes, No Bullshit's channel is loaded with a lot of biased opinions as he leans significantly to the right. But you'd be hard pressed to argue that, despite this particular video not making the mainstream air, that the coverage has shown the depths both sides have plunged to. Australian coverage has been downright blinkered at this point, there is no violence on the left at all and it's all nazi's killing folks... /eyeroll

So instead, you could look at channels like Sargon's, who, despite being constantly labelled as an alt right dickhead, is generally slightly left of center but who calls out violence where/when ever it happens.

I've seen a lot of shit in burrowing in to this, from a lot of sources on both sides (and people who try to be objective). Objectively, if you show up in black masks with pre-bagged shit, urine, fireworks and glass bottles, weighted sap gloves, bike locks and pepper spray combined with a clear message that it's okay to attack "nazi's" who's crime is expressing their admittedly vile ideology, you're not a good person.

Red shirts vs brown shirts, Wiemar Germany pre-WWII anyone?

You can try to make this about me ('ermagerd, you caused me to downvotes the video'), but you've admitted you didn't even watch the vid. At least I gave it a fair hearing, and while I do certainly admit the videos maker has an agenda, it is still documenting what is going on out there. Turn off the fucking voice track if you're too much of a snowflake to hear commentary you don't agree with, but the footage is damning...

As for Bob, I've been fairly unequivocal in the past about his line of deeply partisan BS and the veiled racism he espouses. As per the Ruins Everything sift up (https://videosift.com/video/Why-Proving-Someone-Wrong-Often-Backfires) atm about arguing and how it generally reinforces opinions, do you think that you two haranguing each other constantly (or even you and I) is going to accomplish anything other than entrenching the other side? \= |

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Shock Therapy

vil says...

Probably the one scene of the film that I do not want to see again.
Preceeded directly by one of the best film scenes ever, where the "deaf" chief thanks for gum, followed by rather pointless and premature celebration of "beating the system".
