Brampton Car Accident: Wrongly Charged

eric3579 says...

I'm sure if (and i assume they will) go to court the video evidence will have any charges dropped against them.
Also once shown to insurance companies im sure the woman who caused the accident will be found at fault and all will be right with the world.

A great example of one reason its good to invest a few bucks for a dash cam. The cost of the one in this video just paid for itself big time.

Bill Maher and Colbert - Police Culture has to change

Lawdeedaw says...

There are a few things that do make me laugh at the ignorance though. He hasn't seen any postitive...at all...since the civil rights era...? Okay, little sensationalized...considering *Dash cams *More prosecutions *more black officers (I read one recount how in the 80s the force was so different that only white men could arrest white men in the city, that was probably the funniest example...) *more policies and training against racial bias... Ergo the problem. Mahar doesn't care what the police really do, only the perception of the television plugging points.

I know Maher is a divisive character but I'll take this kind of talk over the canned movie plugging.

Why Recording The Police Is So Important

Cops Don't Like to Be Honked At in Colorado

Three Teen Girls Drowned as Cops Stand By and Do Nothing

newtboy says...

I would like to point out that, at 1:05, you can see what looks like the car in the water slowly sinking but still above water, and absolutely no officer anywhere near the water trying to help. Even if I'm mistaken about that being the car, the video covers most of the pond, and there's no officer seen anywhere trying to go in, or climb out. This video apparently contradicts the officers and Sheriff's account that they tried but could not get into the water. Had it happened, it would have been caught on ONE of those dash cams at some point.

Three Teen Girls Drowned as Cops Stand By and Do Nothing

SFOGuy says...

Well...

I don't know what to make out of this press conference, then, 2 days ago---where the Sheriff says the deputies you can see NOT doing anything aren't the ones who waded into the pond---

And that the ones who did wade in can be seen in other dash cam videos without belts and later without their pants (he has a pretty clear moment where he points out that deputies don't take off their belts or pants randomly for no reason at all...)

So---this might be a more unclear story...

OK, 2 things we do know for certain....
1)they came out publicly claiming that "deputies took off their belts and tried to rush into the water to save the girls." but "didn't get far".
2) we know they didn't enter the water at all, and made absolutely zero attempt to save the screaming girls (unless you count loitering around until the screaming stopped before considering even calling for a tractor as some kind of attempt to save them...I don't).

Had #1 been true and the officers had actually had trouble reaching the car, or getting the girls out, fine. It was in no way true, though. In fact, we hear them discussing the screaming girls and waiting around until "they're done" before even considering any action.

You are welcome to your own opinion about that, but TRYING to save people from drowning is one of the things we pay first responders to do. When they completely, intentionally, and unequivocally shirk that duty (and the lie is proof that they knew it was wrong), and people die, that's murder...they have a DUTY to try. When they lie about it in an official capacity, that should be compounding special circumstances and get them a needle.

Oregon Cop Kicks Biker in Chest

Mordhaus says...

Wilkens was awarded more than $180,000 in total damages.

Jurors additionally determined that Edwards acted with negligence when his police car rear-ended Wilkens’ motorcycle, but ruled that the veteran state trooper did not violate Wilkens’ rights by pointing a gun at him and using force to handcuff and then pull Wilkens to his feet.

Wilkens suffered a broken left clavicle, a fractured rib and other injuries in the Aug. 3, 2012, incident.

Some other nice bits in the article, the officer was driving an unmarked chevy camaro, was unaware that it was equipped with a dash cam, and blamed the rear ending of the bike on 'brake fade' (which a brake expert testified was rare in modern brake systems).

It's a fun read, also the cop was later promoted to captain.

newtboy said:

Really? That broke his collar bone?! It seemed like he barely connected, but if he won in court, I'm sure there was medical evidence.
How much did the jury award him? I hope a lot. Not for the kick, but for ramming him when he clearly only noticed the cop at the light, and then he immediately put his blinker on and even gave an "oh crap" head hang right before he stops and gets rammed.
I wonder if the cop even had his lights and siren on before then, since there's no sound we cant tell. He certainly wasn't up close enough to be heard on a loud motorcycle until the end, nor was he making his presence known before then.
Even if the bike wasn't stopping, he wasn't endangering anyone, so there was no reason to hit him, possibly seriously injuring or killing him, in the first place. Speeding is not a capital offence. Intentional vehicular homicide should be, even if you wear blue pants with a racing stripe.

Colorado Traffic Stop Turns Ugly

MilkmanDan says...

I completely agree that it *looks* like very bad form by the police, and also that race seems like a very clear factor in the escalation.

However, the phone video doesn't tell the whole story. While I tend to believe the passenger when he says that they were NOT told why they were being pulled over, the officers did NOT give their names, etc., the phone video doesn't preclude the possibility that they were given that information before the video started.

I think @bobknight33 is right to say that seeing a dash cam recording from the police car would definitely help clear things up, especially if I was in a situation where my opinion mattered (say, if I was on a jury in a case against the officers).

This is exactly the sort of situation where a good cop would be very happy to have dash cam or uniform cam evidence to show that their actions were justified, if indeed they were. That seems unlikely (but not completely impossible) here, though.

Does a high crime area warrant a stricter standard of police action?

Would be nice to see the police dash cam or such.

The passenger for the most part was complying ,

Just because no reason was give does not mean there is not a reason.

Dashcam Video of Chicago Law Enforcement Shooting Teen

newtboy says...

Clearly, from the article, not a single one, anywhere in the department, from top to bottom, "outed" this murderer, and instead they covered it up, destroyed evidence, fabricated a story and repeated the line 'he was unfortunately killed by a single gunshot to the chest' all the way up. Not one 'good cop' to be found. As I see it, anyone in the department who's hands touched this are co-conspirators after the fact, and need to be charged themselves to the fullest extent of the law. It's only because of complicity of others that cops think, correctly, that they can get away with murdering citizens and claiming self defense. That makes them as much of the problem as the murderers.
Prosecute them all...right up to and including the chief...since they all knew the self defense, single shot story was BS (they had this video) but they continued to shield him by repeating it publicly and in official legal documents.

EDIT: It should be noted that without a complaining witness coming forward, (one that was forcibly removed from the scene and NEVER interviewed, just like every other civilian witness) and without the lucky happenstance that they didn't erase the dash cam footage like they did to other footage, for example the security camera footage from nearby restaurants, there would NEVER be charges for this 'officer', since his entire force covered up the crime.

Wonder how many "good cops" on the scene outed this murderer.

Enormous Explosion In Tianjin, China

I'll put a hole right through your head!

newtboy says...

One more incident of cops being unbelievable douchebags, and other cops allowing them to get away with it. Sickening how often this kind of thing is caught on tape, meaning it happens 10 times more often than we see at least.
Glad he's on leave at least, but a paid vacation does not really seem the appropriate outcome, here's hoping he's fired after the 'investigation', but I doubt it.
Good thing his angry threat to 'confiscate the video' was more hot air.
Crappy that even the reasonable officer tells him clearly "the longer you stay here, the more trouble you're going to get into", implying 'because the detective will make more trouble for you, he's lost it', and doesn't tell the detective that jumping out of your unmarked car and threatening to shoot someone in the head and beat them to a pulp is out of order.
If this was an 'open carry' guy who 'stood his ground', he could have shot that cop with no (legal) consequence.
Damn it, I'm going to have to get a dash cam just to protect myself from outrageous 'authority figures' now.
