Woman suffers accident after discussing scooter regulations

Sagemind says...

This is why Motorized Vehicles should use the bike lanes, and not the sidewalks and crosswalks. They are too fast and will cause accidents mixed in with slower pedestrian traffic.

History of Loitering | Racist American History

Mordhaus says...

Well, you give a cop a law and they will find someone to pick on.

Except jaywalking, nobody seems to enforce that shit here in Austin. Can't tell you how many times I've had some dumb ass professor or student cross right in front of me, many times with no walk signal and nowhere near a crosswalk. Same thing on Lamar, try to go get a fucking street taco or something and see how many people just meander across a 4 lane road.

I don't disagree with their premise of why these laws were written or how they're historically used, but as a white punk, I was harassed for loitering dozens of times and often threatened with arrest. Because I was usually holding, I usually complied and walked away ASAP instead of arguing, when I didn't it was always far worse, up to and including being put in handcuffs for hours while they decided if I was worth arresting or they should just ticket me....so it's not only used as a racist tool.

Ducks in Germany wait for the green signal at a crossing

Sarzy says...

Fake to the max, but I did find it funny on my recent trip through Europe that in some countries, people would wait politely at crosswalks and refuse to jaywalk (like Austria and Germany), and in other countries they'd just cross whenever they wanted, lights be damned (like Portugal and especially Italy).

NICEST Car Horn Ever- DIY

Buttle says...

Motor boy gets it wrong on at least two counts:

1) There is absolutely no reason to try to be nice to someone who is texting while in control of a motor vehicle -- they are endangering everyone around them and richly deserve social opprobrium.

2) Teenagers, like old ladies in walkers, have the fucking right of way in the crosswalk, and are in no way obligated to go as fast as some asshole driver wants them to.

Angry pedestrian gets instant karma

nanrod says...

Well, you seem to be absolutely certain you know exactly where the front of his car is relative to the crosswalk markings. However, due to foreshortening, it's impossible to tell precisely where he's stopped. I'll admit that it does look like he's crossed the stop line a bit (but even that is not certain) but it seems clear to me that he hasn't crossed the nearest line of the crosswalk. He also has come to a complete stop before the pedestrian has reached the centre of the road so your characterization of this stop as being illegal and dangerous is rather hyperbolic.

harlequinn said:

No, he stopped over the line. He's in the intersection. Illegal and dangerous.

The driver is on Wyatt St in Adelaide, South Australia. The pedestrian is walking along Flinders St.

Epic Anti-texting rant

Digitalfiend says...

I see this every morning while dropping my kid off at school. Parents texting while sitting at stop signs or driving through the school zone with their heads down (there are three crosswalks and LOTS of kids, so that's even scarier). I also see this a lot as a cyclist. Usually when I see an oncoming car slowly drifting into in my lane it's generally someone with their head down and, I assume, looking at their phone.

People are so stupid...

Massive Police Chase Against Stunt Motorcycles

Pit maneuver, please.
They were clearly endangering the public, and resisting arrest. Any injury they get from being rammed off their bikes, including death, is not compensable, and is their own fault.
What happens if you use a spike strip on a bike, I wonder.

What fucking reckless douchebags. Every single one of them should have their bike(s), and license taken, and then should be run into by their own bike at the maximum speed they ran from the cops, and then be arrested (if they survive).
They didn't think twice about running red lights at full speed while not even looking forwards sometimes. It's amazing they didn't kill someone in a crosswalk.
If you want to ride dirty, don't expect a whit of sympathy when you get rammed off your bike and end up paralyzed.
I was really glad to see at least one of them take himself out. I hope his bike is totaled, and his legs as well. I only wish it had happened 20 more times. Maybe he'll turn all his buddies in so he doesn't also get reamed by the DA.

Red Neck trucker says NO to this blonde trying to merge...

Not in this instance. The law is derived from the NSC recommendations and common sense, and agrees everywhere in the country that if you could avoid the accident and didn't, it's your fault, no matter what others were doing wrong. Clearly the case here.

How many children/elderly/animals have you mowed down because they were J-walking, not in a legal crosswalk? Your position tells me that when you see that, you think it's proper to accelerate and steer towards them, not brake and steer away, and if they don't get out of the way it's all their fault and you have no responsibility for killing them even though you saw them there and never slowed down, they were doing something wrong so it's all on them, eh? Let me know how that plays out in court.

@jmd, you just suck at understanding, analysis, and acting adult. ;-)

Newtboy, you just suck at understanding. There is a difference between guidelines from an association, and the law.
