Green New Deal: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

ChaosEngine says...

The older I get, the more fatalist I become about climate change.

Honestly, we've missed the boat on this. We're fucked and there's nothing we can do about it.

And anyone who says that you can make a difference is talking out their arse. The actual useful things you can do are:

1: have less (preferably no) children. This dwarfs any other action you can take by a factor of 5.
2: Switch to a plant-based diet
3: Stop flying

Ok, 1 is not going to happen. People are still having kids and there hasn't even been any serious public debate about this (despite it being the single most impactful thing any individual can do).

2 and 3 will help, but nowhere near enough.

The ONLY thing that could have saved us is what Extinction Rebellion are proposing: attack climate change on a total war footing. Convert the entire economy over to fixing this.

And it needed to happen a decade ago.

But our leaders ignored this, and now it's too late.

I feel bad for anyone who has kids, but frankly, I'm just hoping the worst of it doesn't kick in until I've kicked the bucket.

David Attenborough on how to save the planet

All these except nuclear war are happening now, and effecting first world countries too.
Food shortages, check.
Super bugs, check.
Climate change, check checkity check.
Massive migrations due to effects of climate change, double check.
Water shortages, check....ask a Californian.
Wealth inequality causing civil unrest, check.

Because we aren't living in Bartertown yet is no excuse to ignore reality. These things are currently happening around the globe, in third AND first world nations.
Here's one small example getting very little airtime....

3. I'm beginning to want to start a pot of which terrible thing will happen first to 1st world countries (sadly, the beginning will be poor countries getting fucked and 1st world countries complaining that it now costs $30 for a single banana). Super bugs and catastrophic pandemics (maybe measles!)? Climate change? Nuclear war? Massive migrations of refugees who can't live where they are due to climate change or war? Water shortages? Wealth inequality that will implode on itself? There are so many terrible things on the precipice of happening that I don't even know what I'd bet on, honestly.

1. Even though I definitively know the world is beyond fucked at this point, I still think the scientists are not doing themselves any favours by making these "probably" scenarios rather than almost definite ones. As said, even though in some ways I'm looking forward to when the shit starts hitting the fan, I've lost faith in knowing when it'll actually start happening. It seems like every other week I'm told that "soon it'll really start to go all to shit". And it never really does, especially for 1st world countries.

2. Great Filter, Humanity. Humanity, Great Filter. Nice to meet you.

Neil deGrasse Tyson - Science in America

newtboy says...

That is certainly what your ilk is hoping, and it is why they politicize any science they dislike in order to attempt to discredit it.
Sadly, so many don't have a grasp of the science and are so entrenched in their political team they simply take their lying spokesperson's word for the truth and never look for themselves...they couldn't understand if they did, they aren't scientists. (Neither are your spokespeople)

Climate change is a great example. You won't find a scientist who's a climate change denier that doesn't or hasn't gotten funding from energy corporations or their cohorts, often washed through donation companies to hide the source because they know it discredits them. What you apparently fail to grasp is the right is the group politicizing and confusing these issues, usually for monetary gain....sometimes over ancient divisive doctrine....never to reveal the "truth" or facts about a complex situation, that's simply not important to the right anymore, not a whit....I wonder if they're even capable of comprehending something complex anymore, certainly doesn't seem like it.

When science becomes political it becomes corrupted and hence discredited.

Global warmer/gender/ abortion are the best examples.

Just going to search "climate change deniers" and post whatever stupidity you find on YouTube and call it "proof", eh? I know you didn't actually even watch these videos, much less examine their ridiculous claims, you didn't have time.

Too bad you don't understand science a whit, or you would be ashamed of yourself.

More disproof of the hoax. More people don't believe this crap. Al Gore and is ilk have brainwashed our children for last 20 + years and now they are indoctrinated is this hoax

More disproving the man made climate warming hoax.

The 97% is so misleading. see time in above vid starting at 6:11

So only of 100% survey only 32% believe in Climate change is man made.

Sorry, Bob, your dude is either a moron or liar. (The woman screaming at him from off camera isn't much better.)
I had my proof when he lied "best case scenario, 10 ft sea level rise in 40-50 years, worst scenario is 100ft."

That is absolutely not even close to the prediction. Most accepted predictions are in the 2-3 ft sea level rise range by 2100, not 10-100 ft by 2060. Since he is so incredibly wrong about the basics, I have no doubt he's just as wrong or worse in his understanding of the science and not worth my time.....his lack of understanding a temperature change that takes thousands or tens of thousands of years is less destructive than one of equal magnitude taking decades reinforces that assumption.

His proof it's not real....he hasn't noticed it on the prospectus for condominiums or bank loans in Miami...not that he's read many but he's certain not a single fucking one mentions sea level rise....but that's absolutely bullshit, they do. Prices in low lying areas have steadily dropped since 2000 specifically because of increasing chances of flooding, while higher, previously low income areas are becoming gentrified. Hurricane and flood insurance rates have also skyrocketed because insurance companies do factor in climate change, which would be noted in a condo sales prospectus or bank loan. He's quite simply lying.

Don't think it went unnoticed that you didn't address the question a whit.

So let's have those names, your bloodline will not be saved from the disaster you help cause.

These kids play outside no matter how cold it gets

DrMaximan says...

Put me on a warm sunny beach any day and I will be happy!
But I love how you are teaching the kids how to adapt to their environment and love it for what it is, it will teach then invaluable lessons in the future, no matter how much the climate might change.
We can learn so much from both indigenous communities and from other foreign communities around the globe, so embrace it, learn from it and teach each other the best way to survive.
Denial, arrogance and lack of understanding our environment are the best ways of failing our chance of survival.
Great video, great kindergarten!

Why You Should Care About the Plastic in Your Poop

newtboy says...

*doublepromote *quality info, even if it barely scratches the surface of this food web destroyer.
This seems like our backup Armageddon. If the effects of climate change don't wipe us out, the survivors get to die slowly of petroleum poisoning.
I hope those disposable forks were worth it.

I was surprised he didn't mention all the plastics we eat intentionally, like any toothpaste with sparkles for instance....that's just bits of plastic we are fed on purpose.
