Remembering Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

newtboy says...

You do know you have zero credibility, right?
If you claim she said or did these things, that's enough evidence for most people that she didn't.
Oh...surprise surprise surprise, 1 minute to find it's definitely utter bullshit. That was not in the 1977 report. Fuck you you liar.

Also, you're a real piece of shit making up lies and talking ill of the dead before they're in the ground, one worthless human being in every way. Please tell your family to notify us when you die so we can spend a few days talking shit about you, telling everyone who will listen you sucked off 11 year old boys regularly, turnabout is fair play. Now kindly choke on a bag of baby dicks and die, liar.

Dishonest,
people starting shit for the wrong cause.
Emotions,
sparking in our brains from all the lies.
I can’t breathe,
you’re choking me, I swear I’m the wrong guy.
I can’t speak,
the color of my skin makes me a liar.
Disarm the flock,
of human pigs.
If they meant no harm,
why would they need
these shiny guns?
Against these kids who were unarmed and full of fear,
protect and serve?
You’re not fooling me!
Now what?
They’re gone and you’re excused?
No future…No resolution…
This place used to be different.
Everyone was nicer.
Some of you would even help another.
Now we fight about the differences, that some of us just carry.
In our blood and in our genes and the place my mom was born.
Retired men
are freaking out
with all these kids,
that are coming out.
Leave them alone!
And continue living your boring reality.
They are superstars,
and you are nothing!
Holy shit!
They won’t stop!
Blaming it on being old school?
No excuses!
Not anymore!
Racist homophobes,
preaching the wrong words,
your time is fucking done!
You want freedom of speech?
You make me fucking sick!
Your future’s obsolete!

And the time will come when we’ll be free to be who we are or wear what we pleased without being scared. The time is now!

To put some context here, this calf was separated from his mother to become veal. So it's easy to say "aww cute" but this creature is about to go through hell for somebody's sandwich.

This is what will happen to this calf within a few days: [url redacted]

He will be beaten and thrown onto the truck. He will have his head crushed by a bolt gun to knock him unconscious, and then he will be hung up my one leg and have his throat slit to kill him, and his unconscious body will choke on this own blood.

Demonstrating Quantum Supremacy

moonsammy says...

It'll be useful eventually, but I wouldn't bank on soon. My final project in college was related to quantum computing, which at the time (18 years ago) was effectively entirely theoretical. I've enjoyed seeing the steady, albeit slow, progress.

The areas where quantum computing will really shine are problems which involve a huge number of possible answers, but only one best or correct one. The traveling salesman problem is a classic of computer science, as you can scale it up in complexity to the point where any traditional computer will eventually choke on the sheer number of permutations to test. Great way to demonstrate the need for clever solutions and well-written algorithms vs brute force approaches. An adequately sophisticated quantum computer, however, will theoretically be able to solve the traveling salesman problem nearly instantly, regardless of the level of complexity / number of nodes to navigate. Because it just tests all possible answers simultaneously.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker | Final Trailer

I still have a hard time getting into these new movies with Rey as the protagonist. The first movie started off promising but the Last Jedi really killed it for me. Rey will probably end up choke-slamming the Emperor back down the nearest reactor shaft without breaking a sweat, so, I'm just going to see it for the space battles...

Racist Australian Senator egged by hero kid

newtboy says...

Please let this be the new norm every time senator dumbfuck speaks, he should never leave another speech dry, and please wear studded leather next time so the dumbass muscleheads have a harder time trying to choke you out or break your neck...or bring a few yourself.

So glad to know he's been released without charges and is supported by a strong majority of his countrymen (apparently up to and including the PM,) and has well over $20000 donated to defend him through go fund me and other pages supporters set up for possible legal fees.
*quality act that should be repeated....and blamed on the "victim" every time.

Sexual Assault of Men Played for Laughs

I understand. I'll grant that it seems a little "helicopter-parent" like to worry about this sort of thing. However, I do not agree that the transgressions are as harmful OR harmless as you suggest.

The Toy Story Examples again.
The one from Sid is itself an allusion to Star Wars where Darth Vader is torturing a soldier for information about the rebel base locations. If I'm not mistaken, that person is force-choked to death after his mind betrays him and gives Vader the info he needs.

Buzz approaches Woody after Sid steps out and commends him after the fact. "A lesser man would have talked under such torture."

Here is the encouragement. It doesn't matter if Sid is a good or a bad guy. Although, arguably, Sid isn't really a villain - just a kid who likes to play rough with his toys. But that's a different argument. I believe the encouragement is in the promotion of the idea that, put bluntly, torture is effective.

It's this idea, whatever the character motivation is at the time, nomatter who the character is, that encourages the use of torture as an acceptable means of extracting some kind of cooperation from the person being tortured- which is simply NOT true.

Why the pattern? why can't he be just ripping apart his toys like he did with the doll earlier?

I'm not fishing for 'micro agressions' - I'm against promoting the idea that torture works.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/12/08/world/does-torture-work-the-cias-claims-and-what-the-committee-found.html

"Time and time again, people with actual experience with interrogating terror suspects and actual experience and knowledge about the effectiveness of torture techniques have come out to explain that they are ineffective and that their use threatens national security more than it helps."
https://www.outsidethebeltway.com/an_fbi_interrogator_on_the_effectiveness_of_torture/

I argue that presenting torture as something that DOES work encourages policy decisions that allow for torture as a means to an end. When in reality it's simply just some kind of revenge driven harm propaganda.

I kind of swing the other way on this. We live in a cruel, violent, unjust world. Talking about that is not automatically an endorsement of it. Making jokes about it is part of talking about it and an important coping mechanism. Yes, talking and joking about it CAN be done in a way that encourages it, but it's NOT automatic.

As per your Toy Story examples, the ultimate take away for the young audience exposed to it is that the violence/torture was a clear cut bad thing. ...
... We need to relax a little bit about looking for micro-aggressions and 'bad' culture in every little thing that people say or joke about,

Fireman Rescues Dog Trapped in Freezing Lake Water

newtboy says...

Ok, my understanding of his comment was that these firefighters were in the wrong because they put themselves at (minimal) risk for an animal, which should never, under any circumstances, be done.
"NEVER ANY reason to RISK human life for an animal"....that's a huge leap from making an informed educated decision on how much risk is acceptable, and miles away from selflessly putting themselves in harm's way to save lives, which I think is how most people see and treat them. (Strictly read, he wouldn't cross the street to save a choking baby panda....I get he didn't mean to be so silly, but never any risk is NO risk. I'm sure glad the anti poachers in Africa don't share his sentiment.)

Had he said it's never acceptable to knowingly sacrifice human life to attempt to save animals, I would still disagree, but I could at least comprehend his point and argue each risk/benefit equation would be different. Accepting no risk whatsoever on behalf of animals' lives is inhumane, but is quite human.

Firefighters willingly risk their lives to save inanimate property daily, hearing one say they think living animals deserve less risk on their part than a lumber yard is infuriating and incredibly disappointing to me.

makach said:

tbh, I think he has a point. Thing is, as far as I think, risk was very low in this incident. Firefighters are professionals, they work with risk. they made a decision and worked with that.

same thing probably applies to humans, if they consider it unsafe to save a life they will most likely not risk a life.

Plastic Fork Removed From Sea Turtle's Nose

newtboy says...

This is the lucky 1/1000 that gets found and saved.
This is becoming the norm rather than the exception, although often it's a plastic bag, mistaken for their food source, jellyfish, that horrifically chokes or suffocates turtles to death.
The ocean is chock full of petroleum products like plastics, mostly in near microscopic pieces. If you eat seafood of any variety, so are you.

Of Course I'm Trying To Indoctrinate You In My Beliefs

shinyblurry says...

That being said, I don't think Christians should mix politics with their faith. It mostly breeds hate and the gospel of Jesus Christ is never mentioned. I have moral objections to some things which are legal in the United States, but that isn't my focus. The Israelites when they were taken captive by Babylon were told by God to pray for the prosperity of the nation so they would live peaceful lives there. Babylon was a pagan nation, much worse morally than the United States. I think Christians should do more praying and less talking about the political situation.

I love America, and God has blessed it from its founding. I don't love the moral direction it has been heading and frankly I think it is in big trouble. God will eventually turn America over to its enemies if it continues down this path with no repentance.

As far as left and right, I am independent politically. I agree with some things on both sides, and disagree with much on both sides. The democrat party has become more and more secular so I don't agree with them as much anymore but the republican party worships God with their lips and not with their heart. I don't care for the cutthroat politics of either party, or the goading of their supporters, working them into a constant state of outrage and fervor and hatred of the other. Politics are poisoning this country and choking out civilized discourse. A Christian should never drink from that well but share the living water of Christ and speak the truth with love, sincerely caring about the other person regardless of their political affiliation.
