I'm calling fake... thats just a regular car with CG graphics on it.. he was actually just going to join the party train. There are never cops around when you are stuck in traffic!

Han Solo movie trailer

notarobot says...

I was annoyed at Rogue One having a passive protagonist....

I felt pretty burned by paying money to see TLJ's disconnected train-wreck plot....

Casting wasn't the problem in either film. Amazing CG visuals around greenscreen actors can't fix weak writing.

Hmm... not sold yet. Looks pretty, but so did Rogue One. A bit worrying that they barely showed Solo in his own movie....

AUTOMATICA 4k - Robots Vs. Music - Nigel Stanford

CGI rendered tests to further fool you into thinking it's not all CG. It's been done before.

This seems like a job for Captain Disillusion!

EDIT: Perhaps I should clarify a bit. By CGI I don't just mean it's all 3D renders. I mean more that it's all computer trickery of some sort. Some 3D, some compositing, lots of time manipulation. Just look at how often he's clearly green screened in. Look at how the cymbals move. A robotic arm can punch through a piano? There's a lot of CG going on here. And if it's in the crazier shots, I don't see why it wouldn't be in the simpler shots.

I don't think all of it is. These tests seem like they wouldn't have been done if the whole video is cgi.

Superheroes look ridiculous without special effects

I'd imagine quite a lot of todays TV & Movie acting is like that, even more traditional television. So much more acting on green screens and pretending to do things for the CG than we think.

4K 60fps Photo Realism With Unreal 4 Engine

kir_mokum says...

considering what it takes to render actually photoreal CG at 4K, doing it in real time at 60 fps is at least 10+ years away. and that's extremely generous. this stuff looks awesome... for realtime renders in a video game. they're way the fuck off from photoreal.

How David Fincher uses CGI to perfection: kaptainkristian

kir_mokum says...

i see loads of people shit on VFX and CG like it's ONLY bad (and with almost no understanding of the process). often the stuff they complain about are massively difficult shots that could never work in the real world or because it was what the client wants and/or because their reference was other VFX, not real things. there is very little actually bad VFX in properly budgeted movies insofar as artist ability and technical knowledge. this is why i think james cameron or ang lee deserve zero credit for the VFX of avatar or life of pi. all they did was secure the money to get them made and then shit all over them with bad ideas.

Do you really think people hate on cgi, just because it's cgi? I can't imagine that would ever be the case. I myself hate it when i notice it poorly done and looks like shit. Tends to take me out of the story/movie. Bad cgi like bad anything just sucks, and it's more apparent these days as it's used so much more.

Sikorsky - Boeing Future Vertical Lift

So if this next generation helicopter is so great, why are we only seeing a CG representation? surely they've built some sort of prototype if they can make all these claims. Or are all these fantastic benefits only available in-engine with Unreal or something?

The Films of Steve Bannon

How 'Rogue One's' Princess Leia, Grand Moff Tarkin Were Crea

iaui says...

Y'know, the first thing the new Tarkin brought to mind was LA Noire. To be honest, I think LA Noire did the whole face-scanning thing much better. Now, they had an easier job to do, where the whole game is already CG so perhaps the faces don't stand out as much, but it does feel like they did a better job.

I actually think they tried to control Tarkin's face a little bit too much. I think there will perhaps be a 'realization' in the industry that adding a host of very subtle random fluctuations to a face will make it seem more real.

I found the discussion about lips sticking together to be fascinating, and that's certainly headed in the right direction. There's probably something about gravity being applied to faces that make them seem realer, too. Like that they subtly jiggle and bounce as they move and that at a miniscule level the skeleton of the skull moves first to push the musculature and skin of the face around second. Those kinds of subtle movements are probably what could make this kind of thing realer.
