How to vacuum seal food in a ziplock bag using a microwave

JiggaJonson says...

Well, it's not really vacuum sealed. It's more like he melted thin plastic onto the food, I wouldn't recommend using this as a common practice since, after all, plastic is made from petroleum and contains a considerable amount of carcinogens when ingested.

Great Advice to Quit Smoking (BBC Horizon)

This is pretty much exactly like religion vs. atheism, with religion being of course smoking.

Anti-smoking is by far the more religious. Smoking is blamed for a host of sundry afflictions with scientific support that no one has the courage to challenge. People want it to be evil and that's what they get. No serious scientist would do any unbiased research, because if he found anything remotely pro-smoking the political fallout would ruin his career overnight.
Our surgeon general states that 70% of lung cancer victims got it from smoking, but lung cancer continues to rise with nary a blip - even though smokers per capita have fallen under 25% and have been there for a decade. If you want me to support this claim with data, sorry I can't. Neither the CDC or the ALA, or any other site I could find, will release any data cross referencing lung cancer victims and smokers. You can easily find how much carcinogens a black single mother of 2 will inhale in a 12x12 room with one smoker, but a table lookup of smokers v lung cancer victims will get you a 404 error. Try it.
That's religion. People needing an evil, ignoring the facts, suppressing the research of facts, all holding hands and attacking with fervor.
P.S.
My lungs get a clean bill of health every year, even though I've been smoking for over 20 years, simply because I've never tell the doctors I smoke. Ask your smoking friends to try that, it'll give them a chuckle.

You obviously didn't look very hard for data then. With almost zero effort I just came accross this in a high-profile peer-reviewed medical journal. There are hundreds of studies comparing mortality rates between smokers and non-smokers with data going back 100 years. I just want to point out the data in that study was from 1951-2001. In "survival rates from age 35" the difference in survival rates between smokers and non-smokers increases to about 20% difference by age 70. That is, you are looking at about 20% of all non-smokers being dead and 40% of all smokers dead. You can always look at the graphs for much more information than I can type here, but it's all very damning.

"But cancer continues to rise!" I hear in a myriad of different "X does or doesn't cause cancer" topics. What you mean to say is cancer diagnoses have continued to rise. 50 years ago we knew a fraction of what we know now about cancer. This is just one example of why statistics is a profession. There's so much to it I can't begin to describe it here.

John Boehner: Cow Farts Disprove Climate Change!

vairetube says...

1:29.. oh my ...

he thinks the idea carbon emissions = cancer, is laughable? at the very least its helping to warm the planet... but he is not being asked about CO2 the gas, he's being asked about the combination of CO2 with the byproducts of combustion which produce it in the first place.... and he doesn't understand the question... and so gives the example:

carbon emitted by COWS BREATHING isn't bad, so ... why are cars? >>?? DID YOU HEAR THIS>???

We need CO2 to sustain processes that sustain life... we DONT need CO2 + PRODUCTS OF COMBUSTION to sustain those processes... and carbon "emissions" i think are different. they're not testing solely for CO2 at the smog place... but heavy metals and other pollutants and CARCINOGENS.

CARCINOGENS. COMBUSTION ENGINES. HEAVY METALS. FOSSIL FUELS = CANCER.... not laughable. TRUE.

ANYONE!!! HELP!! REPUBLICANS!!!!!!

The Dirty Fuckin' Hippies Were Right

djsunkid says...

I'm not sure I agree with his specific complaints about big pharma, although I agree in principle that big pharma is terrifyingly powerful. Also, the carcinogens in our drinking water bit doesn't seem right.

But in general, I tend to agree with him.

There was a fantastic full-length documentary about the 'dirty fucking hippies' on the sift somewhere that left me with the same feeling expressed by this sift.

ah, here we go: http://www.videosift.com/video/The-Electric-Kool-Aid-Acid-Test-CIA-Scenario-Backfires#comment-121652

Basically, that video said that all those protesters actually stopped the vietnam war. But what freaks me out is... if those people are the baby boomers, aka rthe people who are in power now... why the fuck do they keep making more and more wars?

it's so frustrating, especially when you realise just very VERY right the dirty fuckin' hippies were.

I love weed but this is a tad biased. Smoking anything can cause lung cancer because setting fire to stuff, any stuff creates lots of carcinogens. And my memory is terrible, i'm only in my 30's but i have the memory of someone in their 70's. Weed is lovely but lets be honest it isn't good for you.

Let's be honest, it isn't all that bad for you, either.

My life would be a lot better if I could just go down to the store and buy some herb--no worry about the cops, no worry about criminals--then come home and smoke it in peace.

You probably don't believe that. I don't care. You don't know my life.

And yes, weed can impair your short-term memory if you smoke a lot of it all of the time, but back when I was smoking weed, it had little or no effect on my studies.

Your memory problem might be related to something else: are you reading every day? Are you doing something besides watching television and surfing the net all night?

No offense, but I am sick of this bullshit. The illegalization of cannabis is doing us all much more harm than good.

Tiny Mouse Gets Tail Stuck In Honey

GoShogun says...

I once worked at an auto oil change shop and one of my co-workers had put out one of those sticky pad mouse traps. It worked and a mouse got stuck to it. I felt bad for the poor little guy struggling to get free. I couldn't peel it off, the pad way too sticky. So I tried using some water to get him unstuck. That didn't work so then I brilliantly tried some motor oil to unstick him. No luck but I was intent on saving this cute little mouse. So even more brilliantly, I used some WD-40. Then some transmission fluid.

Finally, after about an hour of carefully toiling away at getting this mouse free...the mouse died and I threw him in the garbage still stuck to the sticky pad and soaking in carcinogens. And then I went to McDonald's and ate chicken nuggets with honey dip. And that's why this video reminds me of that tasty tasty day.

Bill Maher Talks About Marijuana & Michael Phelps Scandal

>> ^AceOfKidneys:
no, that's wrong. Swimming 5 hours a day is MUCH healthier then smoking weed, AT ANY POINT, IN ANY POOL, in comparison TO ANY WEED.
I've been a toker for about 5 or 6 years, everyday, excessively and I've had to stop recently because I became a pathetic, lazy, non-contributing member of society, not to mention socially awkward, and often paranoid, and I doubt I could say the say if I spent all that time exercising.
I'm not going to say that chlorine isn't bad for you, but you can't say marijuana's better for you than TAP WATER, when you have no scientific reasoning to back it up, sounds a little religulous doesn't it?

By the way, I agree for Phelps not saying anything about this, lets remember, he himself did not apologize, his publicists did, and besides that, I don't think Phelps should become a marijuana advocate, because he doesn't know any god damn thing about it. I agree with the legalization of ALL drugs, but I am a even stronger supported of EDUCATING people about drugs, like Bill maher.
PS, please don't say I don't know what I am talking about, a couple of months ago, I would be shouting at the comments I just made, but we can't just blindly follow lifestyles because someone else is telling us not to, we can keep being dogs.

Nobody is here saying you should sit on your ass all day and toke up for years. Pot, like anything else, yes even swimming 5 hours a day, can have detrimental effects from over-use. And yes even swimming will have negative side-effects long term. Nobody is saying that swimming for 5 hours is worse then smoking pot for 5 hours. But over long term their is a plethora of scientific research that shows that it can, particularly with Chlorine. Obviously a glass of water isn't going to hurt you, but consuming gallons of chlorine over years is VERY bad for your health as Chlorine is one of the most dangerous carcinogens that we consume, most of us multiple times daily.

Mahr is a major advocate for legalization, I'm sure he knows a great deal about the subject. Again I agree with you that Education is very important, though personally I would be against voting for all drugs personally. But there is zero sense in the criminalization of personal use of pot. In moderation of course.

Shit when Phelps got in a car accident after drinking and driving 4 or 5 years ago there was less of an outcry and he got into less trouble over it. He didn't even loose a sponsor. But a picture of him smoking a bong some years ago.. thats the worst damn crime he could have committed apparently.

Weed And Driving

deedub81 says...

Just like pipp3355, I see that there are some major problems with this "experiment."

The subject even admitted that he had a more difficult time and he had to make an effort to concentrate harder.
The host admitted that the study was in NO WAY scientific or empirical.

Even though there wasn't much of any science in the video, you can find some science below:

According to the FDA, 249 medical marijuana patients were killed between 1/1/97 - 6/30/05. Marijuana, cannibis, and other Cannabinoids are listed as the secondary cause of death. It is unclear in the study how many people were prescribed marijuana between those dates.

From Wikipedia: "...a recent study by the Canadian government found cannabis contained more toxic substances than tobacco smoke. It contained 20 times more ammonia, (a carcinogen), five times more hydrogen cyanide (which can cause heart disease) and nitrous oxides, (which can cause lung damage) than tobacco smoke.

Cannabis use has been linked to exacerbating the effects of psychosis, schizophrenia, bronchitis, and emphysema by several peer-reviewed studies for those who are vulnerable to such illnesses based on personal or family history.

In July 2007, British medical journal The Lancet published a study that indicates that cannabis users have, on average, a 41% greater risk of developing psychosis than non-users. The risk was most pronounced in cases with an existing risk of psychotic disorder, and was said to grow up to 200% for the most-frequent users.

While the long term and heavy use of cannabis is not linked to the severe or grossly debilitating cerebral effects associated with chronic heavy alcohol abuse, it has been LINKED to more subtle IMPAIRMENT associated with MEMORY, ATTENTION, AND COGNITIVE FUNCTION.

These mental impairments are likely the cause of the delusions that many marijuana users have about themselves while high. It's baffling that they can think for a minute that they have greater cognative abilities and sharper reflexes while under the influence of a drug that causes depressant and hallucinogenic side effects. The fact that cannibus use lowers blood pressure, impairs psychomotor coordination, hinders one's ability to concentrate, and negatively effects short-term memory is not up for debate. These things have been proven time and time again.

If it doesn't kill you, it will most certainly make you as dumb as a bag of nails.

John McCain's Views on Medical Marijuana

rottenseed says...

McCain handled himself very well, and said exactly what needed to be said.
All you potheads need to grow up and look at yourselves in the mirror, and make some changes.

Of course he said what he needed to say. He's a fucking puppet. That's fine if studies show that marijuana is harmful to your own body. So are cigarettes. So is alcohol. Fuck...so is driving. But these are all legal. Why isn't marijuana?
A) Because cigarettes, alcohol and other legal drugs and pharmaceuticals are taxed
B) Because there is such a stigma to marijuana that a candidate open on the issue of legalizing marijuana is committing political suicide.

In a perfect world there would be actual testing on marijuana. Barring there's no negative long term effects (other than the inhalation of carcinogens and toxins), there should be no reason marijuana should be illegal.

Imagine a scenario whereby a nation of gun-owners, in a country whose culture and history includes and abides guns regardless of the few weak-minded simpletons who use similar above justifications for wishing them gone, is being under-minded by the few assholes in the political arena whose agendas include, but are not limited to, confiscation, incarceration, and ultimately, total control.....But wait-It is not the individual politicians, congressmen, senators, judges, etc. who work to create a situation which makes their tasks closer to being realized.....IT'S the cocksuckers who fund these insipid fucks, and influence governments and world events.

Look for V8 juice and soy chips, or some kind of predominately peanut candy bar. (Payday) Yeah, you're still eating processed crap, but convenience store dining = desperate measures. Some of those granola bars are loaded with garbage, and if they're out of date, their rancid oils are carcinogenic. Yes, it sucks mightily. Suicidal eating is an American epidemic.
