How Car Chase Scenes Have Evolved Over 100 Years

Baby Driver Opening Scene and Chase

ForgedReality says...

Someone should remake this with a modern car. You know, silent since it's electric. Boring, since it's automatic. Can't lose the cops since they can just log in and track it... Car chases and cars in general are going to be so boring in the not-too-distant future.

@bareboards2, yeah, I'm not a fan of Ansel Elgort either, and I'm kinda worried about him playing Han Solo.

@Drachen_Jager Ronin, hell yes! Such a great car chase. Totally underrated movie.

I haven't seen Baby Driver yet (doesn't come out until the 20th on NZ), but isn't the whole point that it's NOT realistic? I thought the concept was basically "car chase musical"? Agree about the cutting, though, which I'm surprised at from Edgar Wright.

I've never seen anything that beats the car chases in Ronin.

This is good, but suffers too much from the current culture of many fast cuts rather than really setting the scene and letting us join the action. I also think the cutting is a little too predictable, partly because they basically re-use three different shots over and over with only occasional drops to different POVs. It also feels a little too much like "look what stunts I can do" rather than an actual life (in prison) or freedom car chase which drains much of the tension from the scene.

Movie Scenes Filmed in Iceland

newtboy says...

If you want gorgeous unspoilt vistas and astounding natural formations, it's damn hard to beat Iceland.

They skipped a great one (and many others)...In Die Another Day, the car chase on ice is filmed on a lake created for the movie. It's a lagoon that has one outflow channel where sea water enters at high tide. That adds just enough salt to keep it from freezing over...unless you make an ice dam in the channel like they did for the movie. The lagoon froze over enough to film the car scenes in what not only looked like, but was an impossible location. Today you can take boat rides among the icebergs in that lagoon.

38-minute car chase or not does not justify this beat down. A good thumping or two sure, but not this.

Two cops need to be charged with assault and let the brothers in the jail give them a talking to.

missisippi burning-you get this straight shitkicker

I watched this when I was bored as fuck in Oaklahoma during the summer of 2002 at my ex's grandma's house. It's too hot to go outside, let's watch grandma's VHS collection. 12 volumes of Conway Twitty specials, Once Upon a Time in the West (Sergio Leone: Henry Fonda and Charles fucking Bronson motherfucker), Breaker Breaker starring Chuck Norris, 9 to 5 starring tig ol bitties, and Mississippi Burning with the Gene HACK-man.

Yep. I watched Mississippi Burning, Once Upon a Time in the West and Breaker Breaker over and over AND OVER all summer in the back woods of Oaklahoma. And played shit tons of magic the gathering (and sex). Even now, when I play magic, all I think of is the word Shitkicker, semi truck car chases, dreary harmonica drifting over a desert, and Dolly Parton's tits (and femdom bondage).

White American culture, huh? This clip is awesome.
