Auto Lending: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Mordhaus says...

In the first place as to the house they had bought, it was not new at all, as they had supposed; it was about fifteen years old, and there was nothing new upon it but the paint, which was so bad that it needed to be put on new every year or two. The house was one of a whole row that was built by a company which existed to make money by swindling poor people. The family had paid fifteen hundred dollars for it, and it had not cost the builders five hundred, when it was new. Grandmother Majauszkiene knew that because her son belonged to a political organization with a contractor who put up exactly such houses. They used the very flimsiest and cheapest material; they built the houses a dozen at a time, and they cared about nothing at all except the outside shine. The family could take her word as to the trouble they would have, for she had been through it all--she and her son had bought their house in exactly the same way. They had fooled the company, however, for her son was a skilled man, who made as high as a hundred dollars a month, and as he had had sense enough not to marry, they had been able to pay for the house.

Grandmother Majauszkiene saw that her friends were puzzled at this remark; they did not quite see how paying for the house was "fooling the company." Evidently they were very inexperienced. Cheap as the houses were, they were sold with the idea that the people who bought them would not be able to pay for them. When they failed--if it were only by a single month-- they would lose the house and all that they had paid on it, and then the company would sell it over again. And did they often get a chance to do that? Dieve! (Grandmother Majauszkiene raised her hands.) They did it--how often no one could say, but certainly more than half of the time. They might ask any one who knew anything at all about Packingtown as to that; she had been living here ever since this house was built, and she could tell them all about it. And had it ever been sold before? Susimilkie! Why, since it had been built, no less than four families that their informant could name had tried to buy it and failed. She would tell them a little about it.

The Lone Man Building a Cathedral By Hand

rabidness says...

Given that this guy is an amateur builder I assume this place will be torn down when he passes. What a weird desire to build a cathedral... I would be / am one of the people that would call this guy crazy.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Donald Trump

newtboy says...

OMG!!!
I could not disagree more.
Trump wrote a book about how to lie your way to 'success', the truth simply is not within that man. 2 days ago he claimed to not know the KKK or David Duke, but 8-10 years ago he refused to join any organization that Duke supported...so what happened? It can't be true he doesn't remember, he said he has the best memory in the world, remember? So he's just lying again, right? It is how he said you get what you want, just lie until you get it, then forget all the lies you told and insult and attack anyone bringing them up.
He's also totally incompetent, failing over and over at businesses, including one business that's nearly impossible to lose at, casinos, he's had 3, and bankrupted all of them 4 times! Then there are Trump steaks, vodka, magazine, mortgage, the game, airlines, and even his terribly named web site...gotrump.com (supposed to be go-trump, not got-rump). He claims to be a successful builder, but he doesn't build things, he just stamps his name on things others build. I think the reason he won't release his taxes is they will show he's actually lost money, never made any, and is only rich today because he was once massively rich (thanks to a huge inheritance and before that, no interest, 'never pay it back' loans from daddy) and lost a ton of money, both his and investors, not because he ever made money or was particularly successful at anything...contrary to what he says.
So, the contention that he 'knows the best people and will put together a team of greatness' goes against his record of putting together teams that fail miserably at businesses that are idiot proof! The contention that his big mouth will let us in on what he's doing supposes that he'll tell the truth...something he never does.
Clinton may have no spine, be a liar, and may wave whatever way the wind blows (all 3 of which Trump trumps her on), but for 'more evil', Trump is definitely your man.

Sagemind said:

I would never vote for Trump, but I would choose him over Clinton, because he seems less evil to me.
Less competent, but Clinton seems like she would be using her power for evil and screwing the poeple at every turn for in favor of herself and her business pals.

Trump on the other hand, could never run the country but he would choose the people who could. He has such a big mouth that we'd know everything he was doing, or at least, he'd trip over his words and we'd get to see right through him.

If it comes to picking the less evil, Trump is your man.

MilkmanDan says...

I'm late to the party, but that was quite fun to watch. Reminds me in some ways of watching the interviews with Battlebots builders and then the actual matches.

I bet these will pick up some steam here on the sift once more people check it out.

**edit**
Oh, and the neon didn't bother me. I bet the pilots need some high-contrast visual cues to help them navigate; might not need to be neon, but something. If enough people object to the neon in particular, I'm sure they will experiment with alternatives.

3 Steps To Proper Lifting

poolcleaner says...

Hah, so these body builders go to the gym rather than the strip club. It's cool, there's no touching at strip clubs either. The only difference is that fans of strippers don't say "no straight" to the girls.

Dog Skimboards at Sunset

Payback says...

It's like when you've spent 2 months perfecting your computer build, like this, and someone sees it and says, "That's a lot of BS for under your desk."

It's about respect. The Shetland Sheepdog isn't a toy like the horses. It's a working dog.

oritteropo said:

Maybe it's a regional thing? The dog is certainly called a sheltie here in Australia. I did a google image search for sheltie, and only got dogs and no ponies... but the dictionary says it applies to both and just means they're from the Shetland Islands.

What if everyone just stopped playing and watching football for a year or two? FAN STRIKE! Erase football from your mind until these worker exploiting pyramid builders are gone.

New Method For Making Wood Corners For Drawers Or Boxes

atomicfro says...

If he has a custom builder for the blade, why doesn't he just do it himself? Go on kickstarter or something to get enough orders to do a large bulk run with enough room to make some money, do the run, send them out to your backers, and then hopefully you'll have enough to start your business and quit your day job.

Pedestrian bridge is built for safety

Payback says...

Actually, it's worse... When they show you the underneath of that area, you can see where they placed a piece of conduit in the concrete before pouring.

I get the feeling the wires were supposed to be moved but for some reason -most likely bureaucracy and/or corruption- they didn't, and the bridge builder went ahead anyway, probably expecting the wires to be moved later (if they even gave a shit).

Bruti79 said:

It's amazing the thought process here. They had to take those wires down, drill two holes through the stairs, and then run them though. Wouldn't it have been easier just to guide the wires around the structure when they were putting them back up?

Sundays -- another dark sci-fi film to get a movie deal

RFlagg says...

While the obvious comparison is Matrix, there is also some Dark City as well... and going back even further in time to a Twilight Zone episode called A Matter of Minutes where time is built one minute at a time... it explained why one minute something is one spot, not there, but when you recheck, there again, the builders of time simply forgot to put it back for the one minute. (That episode was based on Theodore Sturgeon's Yesterday Was Monday and duplicated somewhat in Stephen King's Langoliers). Here the problems end up errors that get duplicated and copy errors grow over time...

The Kickstarter description sounds a bit more in depth than the short here... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1374452173/sundays-a-film-about-our-future/description

Last Week Tonight: Tobacco's Legal Bullies

dannym3141 says...

Systemic corruption will bring this planet to its knees.

And we're all to blame. Unless we're willing to be actively involved in the democratic process, unless we're willing to use our overwhelming manpower to DEMAND justice and fairness, unless we drill into our children how important it is to be just and fair and involved, we will be exploited. And it IS happening on a grand scale.

It doesn't have to be like this, with the corruption in banking, politics, the tax loop-holes for the super rich and the toxic policies introduced for the benefit of corporations. All we have to do is decide to stand up together, for each other, and show them by our actions that we will not take it anymore.

My government won't even prosecute HSBC for illegal activity starving this country (and yours, probably) of untold billions in tax revenue, yet on a daily basis they stand in front of the cameras and tell us how lazy benefits claimants have bled our country dry. They have personally stolen millions from us, standing there in a suit confidently telling us they're going to crack down on cash-in-hand builders and the like. I suspect if we start down that particular rabbit hole, we will be left in awe of just how deep it goes - right to the very top of probably every single developed nation's government, possibly for decades. They have been fostering this environment for a long time, steering us to a point where they hold all the cards.

I hate to think i've become a tinfoil hatter, but just look at what's going on.... How can they say that they'll pursue benefits claimants and VAT-dodges to the end of the earth, but not say a single word about HSBC helping millionaires and billionaires not to pay tax? How can i possibly not see that as a conspiracy? They don't go after HSBC because they are DONORS and FRIENDS.

This isn't stuff i'm making up. It's true, it's real and it's a fucking scary Orwellian nightmare. The guy who leaked the HSBC stuff very recently announced that there are a lot more devastating revelations to come!! (which i read courtesy of al jazeera)
