How to Not Fall Off A Ladder

luxintenebris jokingly says...

right on about kids & ladders. use bike locks to secure ladders to support braces to keep them from traveling.

also, discovered a phenomenon working retail. use a ladder to work merchandise, on upper selves, /lights/etc, and customers are drawn to it like "moths to the flame". end up going up & down while other workers in the area are within 10 yds. grrrrr!

learned to get fellow workers at the base to deal w/the "where're your..." moths, so could finish the high work. (that or do it after closing)

learned safety early as not a fan of heights. secure it so could focus on the climb. "...okay...doing good...one more step...no the ladder isn't shaking that's your pulse..."

An medical biller explains why we pay so much for healthcare

JiggaJonson says...

My daughter had to get braces for her arms which are these : https://www.amazon.com/TraveT-Support-Removable-Adjustable-Outdoor/dp/B076KL3QWN/

They're not like souped up better than those braces, they are THOSE.

The difference is, the ones I linked here cost $3.53
The ones my insurance was billed for and I had to co pay for cost $750.00 FOR EACH WRIST

It costs so much because they charge so much. Simple as that. That's the way @bobknight33 wants it though. Hope you don't have to learn the hard way how to pay for health care in trump's america bob. But the president is going to see to that with that lying about covid-19 shit isn't he. Don't worry, if you get it, trump will still be around to hurt people when you can no longer.

Well done. Did he know what he was doing, or did he just hang on tight? He seemed to brace himself for the shock too.

Edit: I think he has done this before. Perhaps a lot.

2020 Jeep Wrangler Rolls Over In Small Overlap Crash Tests

newtboy says...

When racing, 2/3. No neck brace in those days. Once while training, no helmet either, but yes, 5 point harness in a full tube racing buggy.
Honestly, the only one that made a real difference was the cage. A 4 or 3 point seatbelt would have been sufficient thanks to a deep racing seat, and most rolls were due to super soft silt grabbing the outside tires in a turn....that scrubed a lot of speed right away and made the final hit extra soft, a few were on hardpacked dirt, but they were short course so maybe 30-40 mph entry speed instead of 60+, around 20 by the time my side hit ground.

When you did that was it in a 5 point harness with a helmet, neck brace and rollcage?

It can, but not as often as going 60-0 in 0.05 seconds does. I'll take that soft rollover every day and twice on Sundays over most of those truck results.

I raced off road, I've rolled or flopped over at speed at least 4 times, it wasn't bad at all.

School shootings are getting to the point where parents are starting to contemplate if it's worth spending the money to put braces on their children's teeth.

Uma Thurman's Car Crash on set of "Kill Bill"

eric3579 says...

From NYT article https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/03/opinion/sunday/this-is-why-uma-thurman-is-angry.html?referer=https://t.co/3KI4YYryAt?amp=1

In the famous scene where she’s driving the blue convertible to kill Bill — the same one she put on Instagram on Thanksgiving — she was asked to do the driving herself.

But she had been led to believe by a teamster, she says, that the car, which had been reconfigured from a stick shift to an automatic, might not be working that well.

She says she insisted that she didn’t feel comfortable operating the car and would prefer a stunt person to do it. Producers say they do not recall her objecting.

“Quentin came in my trailer and didn’t like to hear no, like any director,” she says. “He was furious because I’d cost them a lot of time. But I was scared. He said: ‘I promise you the car is fine. It’s a straight piece of road.’” He persuaded her to do it, and instructed: “ ‘Hit 40 miles per hour or your hair won’t blow the right way and I’ll make you do it again.’ But that was a deathbox that I was in. The seat wasn’t screwed down properly. It was a sand road and it was not a straight road.” (Tarantino did not respond to requests for comment.)

Thurman then shows me the footage that she says has taken her 15 years to get. “Solving my own Nancy Drew mystery,” she says.

It’s from the point of view of a camera mounted to the back of the Karmann Ghia. It’s frightening to watch Thurman wrestle with the car, as it drifts off the road and smashes into a palm tree, her contorted torso heaving helplessly until crew members appear in the frame to pull her out of the wreckage. Tarantino leans in and Thurman flashes a relieved smile when she realizes that she can briefly stand.

Uma Thurman said she didn't want to drive this car. She said she had been warned that there were issues with it. She felt she had to do it anyway. It took her some 15 years to get footage of the crash. (Note: There is no audio.)
“The steering wheel was at my belly and my legs were jammed under me,” she says. “I felt this searing pain and thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m never going to walk again,’” she says. “When I came back from the hospital in a neck brace with my knees damaged and a large massive egg on my head and a concussion, I wanted to see the car and I was very upset. Quentin and I had an enormous fight, and I accused him of trying to kill me. And he was very angry at that, I guess understandably, because he didn’t feel he had tried to kill me.”

Even though their marriage was spiraling apart, Hawke immediately left the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky to fly to his wife’s side.

“I approached Quentin in very serious terms and told him that he had let Uma down as a director and as a friend,” he told me. He said he told Tarantino, “Hey, man, she is a great actress, not a stunt driver, and you know that.” Hawke added that the director “was very upset with himself and asked for my forgiveness.”

Two weeks after the crash, after trying to see the car and footage of the incident, she had her lawyer send a letter to Miramax, summarizing the event and reserving the right to sue.

Miramax offered to show her the footage if she signed a document “releasing them of any consequences of my future pain and suffering,” she says. She didn’t.

Mass Shootings On The Rise

newtboy says...

53 shot and 7 dead isn't enough to warrant a mention?! Holy fuck, this country has really gone down the shitter in the last few years.
Even the guy who mailed over 15 pipe bombs to Democrats as intended acts of domestic terrorism only got 20 years today....<1 1/3 year per attempted terroristic mass murder. Is that just because the right wing terrorist is a Trump supporter who targeted Trump's enemies list?
Granted, with more than one per day on average, the shock value is diminished.

We didn't have either excuse, and my parents never got the braces I was prescribed for horrific tmj, not aesthetics. (They got them for my brother's crooked teeth though) My jaw still cracks and locks up 35 years later. I think some parents will use any excuse to avoid the expense and hassle of braces.

I think you have to meet a certain quota of dead and injured now, otherwise it would be nothing but mass shootings everyday and then it would be just too humdrum.

You know, for a while there, with the poor economy and the school shootings, parents were reluctant to spend money to put braces on their children's teeth.

Side note....can anyone tell me why Chicago isn't getting reported? Two mass shootings there on Sunday, 7 dead, 46 wounded. It's not even mentioned on national news, but El Paso and Dayton are dominating it. What gives?

How To Be More Productive

newtboy says...

Hmmmm.....No diagonal bracing, and barely sunk posts directly in dirt with no footings...this ramp will not last. Pressure treated wood is rot resistant, not rot proof. Putting your head down and getting to work finishes the job faster, but like this ramp, not better. I doubt this would pass an inspection, it's almost certainly not up to code.

The idea is work smart AND hard. If you work stupidly, you'll have to work much harder to fix your mistakes.

Vox explains bump stocks

Mordhaus says...

The thing about bump stocks that people are not realizing is that they are simply a mod that allows you to do the same thing you could already do with many semi-automatic weapons, emulate automatic fire.

There is a slightly more dangerous method which can be done simply by not bracing the stock and using the pistol grip. Many semi-auto weapons also can easily be 'broken' to cause slamfires, where the rounds are auto-fired as soon as they are loaded due to a stuck firing pin.

I highly believe in gun rights and the second amendment. But this latest tragedy has finally done it. There is simply no need to have that many semi-automatic rifles in one's possession. We need to re-enact the AWB from 1994, we need to set a cap limit on how many semi-automatic rifles a person can own, and we need to clearly state that ANY modification that can simulate automatic fire is illegal.

We have fostered a state where the mentally ill are no longer being treated or taken care of, except by drugs. Since it is clear that we have multitudes of people separated from becoming the next mass murderer simply based on whether to not they took their meds (or were diagnosed correctly to begin with), we need to make a stricter environment that prevents these people from getting the weapons to make it easier.
